Tropical Storm Bonnie Headed Towards Gulf Oil Spill

JUAN McCARTNEY   07/23/10 11:24 PM ET   AP

Hurricane Bonn

MIAMI — Bonnie has weakened to a tropical depression with winds near 35 mph (55 kph) after crossing Florida.

Forecasters with the U.S. National Hurricane Center said the center of Bonnie came ashore Friday midday near Cutler Bay, about 20 miles south of Miami. It then moved back into the eastern Gulf and was about 85 miles (135 kilometers) southwest of Sarasota late Friday.

Bonnie could strengthen as it moves over the Gulf but also could fall apart before reaching land. The storm is moving north-northwest near 17 mph (28 kph).

Forecasters say the storm should reach the northern Gulf Coast Saturday night or early Sunday.

Tropical Storm Bonnie is over land in South Florida and later this evening the storm will exit land into the Gulf of Mexico over warmer waters on the way to the Deepwater Horizon disaster site. Fortunately, there is a ULL (upper level low pressure system) to the WSW which is producing substantial wind shear preventing Bonnie from intensifying into a hurricane.

Bonnie is forecast to move onto land quickly as the storm turns NW over Louisiana and will not dwell over water for a long period.

A "minor" correction to the headline: It is NOT A SPILL. it's a volcano/gusher, "earth-rift", but it is NOT a spill.

Technician: Deepwater Horizon warning system disabled

KENNER, LA. -- Long before an eruption of gas turned the Deepwater Horizon oil rig into a fireball, an alarm system designed to alert the crew and prevent combustible gases from reaching potential sources of ignition had been deliberately disabled, the former chief electronics technician on the rig testified Friday.

Michael Williams said he understood that the rig had been operating with the system in "inhibited" mode for a year to prevent false alarms from disturbing the crew.

Williams said the explanation he got was that the leadership of the rig did not want crew members needlessly awakened in the middle of the night.

snip

If the safety system was disabled, it would not have been a unique event. Records of federal enforcement actions reviewed by The Washington Post show that, in case after case, rig operators paid fines for allegedly bypassing safety systems that could impede routine operations....

Unbelievable!!!

A rig working for us would be put on down time until they figured it out and got it fixed right.

On the other hand, gas detectors are extremely sensitive and tested once a week. When MMS lands, they frequently test gas detection systems. the detectors easily could go down the day before they land or 5 minutes before they land. Regardless if you have records showing regular test dates, if MMS checks them and they don't go off, you just got an ink - $50K fine.

Ain't nobody worried about Miami!!!

Forecasters aren't even concerned with anything until it hits the warm waters of The Gulf.

i was checking "warm waters of the gulf" and they are downright hot. like 6 degrees above average. i don't know why gulf temps are being ignored except i guess it just more narrative controlled by bp.

Gulf Seafood Gets Chemically Tested for Oil, Not Dispersant

The manufacturer of Corexit, Nalco, has maintained that ingredients in its product “do not

bioaccumulate and are commonly found in popular household products.”

That's "household products," not food. So they're saying that it's safe to eat ingredients found in

household products used to scrub showers and toilets clean. Comforting thought.

Remember it's the new compound of the Oil and Corexit mixed together thats going to be the main problem..

There's still not data testing results on this problem.

No question, what a tragedy if the so far basically spared beaches and harbors of East Texas took the brunt of this and even greater storms this season! If so, a populist born again Democratic voting base may possibly emerge.

But then again this is Texas we are referencing

Let's see now, a great storm gathers up the oil and sends it inland into the heart of Drill Baby Drill and Stop the Moratorium Because We Need Jobs Land.

As an atheist I don't believe there is a just and vengeful God..........but?
