Funakura's situation is troubling on a couple of levels. First, I thought that Texas and, in particular, the DFW Metroplex, was relatively free of the most disastrous effects of the Great Recession. Second, accounting has been touted as one of the in demand fields for college study. Third, this woman graduated in 1984, so her work history might have something to do with her not being employable currently....just don't know....

I agree. Accounting placements are usually made through headhunters and the hiring company usually pays the headhunter fee. It would be highly unusual for an experienced accountant (especially if she's a CPA) to be looking for a position so long. Usually there is lots of demand for accountants. Since she has 26 years of experience, it may be that she is looking for a high level, high salaried job - these take longer to locate than lower level positions even in good economic times. It is also harder to get a job when you don't have one. Or, like you say, there may be issues with her work history or references. It is scary how long apparently qualified people are spending looking for jobs now.
