Summer festival season is upon us, and we'll find any reason to celebrate. Gilroy's celebrating garlic up in the Bay Area, while the Pasadena Rose Bowl is the venue for the LA Street Food Fest. If you've got some cash burning a hole in your pocket, unload at the Renegade Craft Fair or a designer shoe sale. And if you just want to escape the summer heat, cool down at Pershing Square with Friday Night Flicks (screening Boulevard Nights) or frolic at a grown-up water park in Downtown LA.

As we move into July and August, the program of free summer movies in Pershing Square takes a turn away from the wholesome family fare of June, and toward the kitschy, the cult, and the catastrophic. Locals-loving neighborhood video store Old Bank DVD donates five Fridays of films celebrating the highs, lows, and who-knows of LA itself as a cinematic diva — from the 1979 gang-war classic Boulevard Nights (introduced with a Q&A with its stars); to, like, oh my god, gag me with a spoon, the original Valley Girl; the sexy-creepy bargain-with-the-cougar-devil masterpiece Sunset Boulevard; the return of Snake in the harder-than-it-sounds Escape from LA; and a movie about love, loss, Russian missile attacks, and the La Brea tar pits starring the dude from ER and Mare Winningham, Miracle Mile. - Shana Nys Dambrot
