2 Signs of a recession: A resurgence in pyramid schemes and Tony Robbins.
12:01 PM on 07/29/2010
“The quality of the presentation of this video was awful:

1. The technology used was appalling, grainy video of Mr. Robbins and it was obviously not synched properly as evidenced by Ms. Bay not knowing when to speak i.e. visibly waiting for cues from an assistant. In fact, so bad was the sync that on one occasion Mr. Robbins actually said "I guess that left you speechless" as Ms. Bay waited for her prompt to ask another question. Ladies and gentleman, you are in the media capital of the world, surely you can get this right.

2. As a supposedly seasoned TV Presenter/Journalist Ms. Bay did an awful job. My research has shown that Ms. Bay is an incredibly bright person having achieved great academic success, but, by her own admission is a 2006 blog on this site she failed a screen test to be on air. It pained me to watch this as it looked as though she had either:

A. Misplaced reading glasses and was straining to read an autocue
B. A Terrible migraine
C. Taken this way too seriously and had a look of concern on her face as if the world was coming to an end

Please HuffPo, if you are going to take the time and trouble to set up something like this, make sure it is done professionally and that the "personalities" involved are appropriate for the segment.â€

Back in the day when Tony Robbins was getting started he had his followers engage in motivational hot-coal firewalking. Anyone can do this. Just lay a bed of coals. Burn them down until all coals are covered with gray ash. Dip the bottoms of your feet in cold water and walk across the coals. Anyone can do this and they didn't need Tony Robbins help.
05:38 AM on 07/28/2010
As far as I know, Mr. Robbins never claimed the coals were dangerous or that anyone couldn't walk across them, at least physically, without his help. The point was that many people can't bring themselves to do something like this PSYCHOLOGICALLY. Even though the coals are harmless, a lot of people are nevertheless scared by them and think they'll be burned by them. As I understood it, one of his main points was that by walking across the coals and not being burned afterall, people are forced to acknowledge that their assumptions about the danger was false. So something they thought was impossible, due to their personal assumptions and beliefs, turned out to be possible after all. And if their personal assumptions and beliefs about the coals were false, what other assumptions and beliefs might they have, that prevent them from doing things in life, that are also false? Seemed to me a good way to get people to consider their other potentially limiting beliefs. He never claimed to be giving people super-powers (eg immune to fire, bullets, etc). He simply pushed people to see that something they thought was impossible turned out to be quite possible after all. I can see how that could be a motivational exercise, at least for some.

I had an experience several years ago, which helped me realize mind over matter can work. I had just finished cooking barbaqued ribs and was taking them out of the oven when the handle broke and spilled the hot ribs and grease all over my oven door and my legs.

For some reason, I calmly walked up my stairs, put my feet in the toilet and did not even have a blister. I was shocked and so was my family. For years, I contemplated walking on hot coals, just to see if I could do it.

Also, one hot summer day I was closing my kitchen window during a rain storm. My large sun catcher fell and pinned my finger between the window and the sun catcher. It hit my finger so hard, it cut my cuticle and made my finger bleed. I put my finger in the air, took a deep breath and started thinking 'that's not going to hurt'. For some odd reason, it didn't. I never felt pain in my finger. To this day, there is a place on my cuticle, which still shows the damage. I truly believe 'mind over matter' saved me from the pain.

In the end it's all what works for you right? I mean if a pitcher thinks he is gonna keep winning if he doesn't change his socks, more power to him. Tony is ok, he doesn't claim to be a guru, he is just a coach that gives you a bunch of tools and says use what works for you. I listened to his tapes, I think it helped me stay more positive and focus on the important stuff rather than alot of the nonsense that we all spend way too much time obsessing over. I didn't expect the tapes to make me an overnite millionaire, I was just looking to shift gears and shift the focus in my life and I think his tapes helped.

So many negative comments here. They're a good lesson for those of us who don't want to go down that path to negativity. All you naysayers...what are you afraid of...that you might actually like changing your life? Or is it that you blame Tony Robbins for being successful? Give us some examples of what you think he is saying that is BS. Methinks thou doth protest too much.

I do not know why I don't like him. But I actually don't.

But I do like the idea of helping people get empowered, so that he does that for some people is something I respect, even if he is not the one to do it for me.
04:34 PM on 07/31/2010
If you truly feel like you don't like him, then that is evidence he is triggering something in you that you don't want to acknowledge and look at. In that case, he is serving as a mirror for you and could be a great blessing if you are willing to explore it more deeply. If there is no emotional reaction on your part and he just simply doesn't do anything for you (which I suspect might be the case given your second sentence), then it would be much more truthful and positive to say "I don't resonate with him." The prior denotes self-dislike (because in reality everyone is just a projection of our own consciousness) and sends out negative energy. The latter is more respectful to yourself and him and neutralizes any karmic effect. Peace and blessings! ( :

Tony Robbins is the best software upgrade to the hardware we call the human brain that I've ever installed. When he made it easy to quit smoking little did I know I'd NEVER be able to kiss a smoker again. But really. My stomach rolls at the thought. I know two people that used his book Awaken the Giant Within to quit being suicidal, me, and Drew Carey. Look it up. It's true. If it weren't for TR lollie.com would never have been built, my flickr collection wouldn't have been so wonderful.

It leads me to believe that Tony's critics have never tried on a single thing he teaches. How sad for you! You want to take an adventure? TRY ON what Tony Robbins teaches for 30 days, give it 100%. THEN let's see what you have to say. Huckster. Charlatan. B.S. If value were weight, his book Awaken the Giant would be one of the three heaviest books in the universe. I'm an information sponge, a knowledge junkie. Most information isn't something you can apply to every thing in your life. TR shares the most useful, valuable information there is. I used his work to break friends from meth, a woman from a hard core abuser, to get better close up pictures of butterflies, to improve the intensity of orgasms. It's tools. Apply them to anything.

One day I took a drag on my cigarette and my head hurt. I stopped.
04:40 PM on 07/31/2010
Huckster, charlatan......Really? (I haven't read many of the posts and don't intend to - I prefer to focus on the positive). He's been changing thousands of peoples' lives for 30 years - the proof is in the pudding.

Wow… this would not have been a happy ending at all. She would have had to leave sooner or later and Frank would have been pushing her out the door but at the same time devastated with abandonment because she had left.

I know this one. When I got cancer in 1991 my marriage had been old for quite a while. At the same time my wife of 20 years met a guy on the Internet, who she felt was right for her. I kind of though so too.

Like Frank would have said, I was faced with saying “honey… I don’t know if I am going to make it and I don’t want you to miss out especially if I don’t make it, so if you feel you have found the guy of your dreams you need to go… I’ll be alright.â€

It is different here. Their marriage had just begun and ours had been over for awhile.

Their faces certainly said they were "stepping up and setting a new standard"

Before we nominate Tony Robbins for sainthood I think it's important to remember that, yes, he helps people to improve their lives by offering them repackaged information, enthusiasm and encouragement, but he makes a great deal of money doing it, just as Extreme Makeover's Ty Pennington makes a great deal of money building people homes.

So? So what? I paid Dr.s for meds and psychologists who helped me focus on the problem and kept me depressed. So what's wrong with me learning from Tony's repackaged, well collected, excellent and effective tools and him making money off of it? The others didn't help. Tony has helped clearly define the choices that strengthen resolve, make it easy to move the pain and the pleasure around in your mind so they help propel you into your own best future. He's taught me the lion's share of the most important information I've ever learned.... so of course he should be well paid. He's not just a bunch of positive thinking b.s., he provides tools that work. That's worth a lot. And everyone that can watch his show on tuesdays on nbc AND do the homework on the net afterwards - is BLESSED with a free course of some of the most important information they can easily apply to make their lives easier, healthier, stronger and more interesting. He is no saint. But his show.... come on now, you know that's a blessing! :)) It's freakin' FREE!

The premise of my post is that some of the lavish praise heaped on Tony Robbins gives the impression that he does what he does out of altruism or that he's some sort of genius. The products and supplements he sells are outrageously priced and can be found elsewhere for far less. He could reduce the price of everything he sells by 50% and still make millions, but like any business he charges the absolute most he possibly can to maximize profits. Obviously the tv show is free but that doesn't mean he is doing it for free; he'll probably make more from each episode than you make in five or ten years and the free advertising will generate millions more in new business from desperate people who have lost their jobs, homes and health insurance. I'm glad you found his products useful, it doesn't sound like you ever needed psychoanalysis or medication to begin with.

...within my mind

What gets lost in the Tony Robbins express is that everybody is different. It's not Tony's fault. His message is accurate. His personal story is one of failure and recovery. When he has made mistakes, he takes responsibility for his actions.

When I saw Tony in Orlando many years ago (disclaimer: I had a free ticket) he came on to the stage like the light brigade and a few minutes into his program said, "What is it you really want?" to which a young person in the audience stood and replied, "To be exactly like you!" to which he responded, "Don't be like me, be yourself!" Right on, Tony. I knew the person and after the program they said, "He said that, but I don't think he meant it. I think he would be pleased if I was like him."

For those who are more reflective in their search for "success" they might consider another "Breakthrough" written by Matthew Fox. It's about Meister Eckhart's sermons into contemporary context. Then again, maybe not. It's about finding what's right for us at the time.

I love you Tony Robbins!!!! Your advice is 100% the conclusion my husband and I came to about 30 days ago. We cut cable TV, stopped watching or listening to news and started reconditioning our minds to think only of what we WANT, of GOOD things to come and to only pay attention to the things we are grateful for---even if it is just enough money to pay a bill and buy some food. And we are spending more quality time with our kids doing free things AND working on the negativity that we have trained them only too well in! The news and media are really drilling way too much negativity and hopelessness into the people now-----THANK YOU and Arianna for doing this!!

Just wanted to say "Beautiful comments! Thank you for sharing them."

You've made a terrific move in reclaiming yourselves, your thoughts, your lives. Terrific.
We've been without tv, of any kind, for the past 19 years and I can honestly say, THAT was the worst influence in our lives - having/watching tv. Albeit, I do miss Wimbledon.

I close with an Andy Rooney quote "If you harbor hatred, happiness will dock elsewhere."

Peace and thank you again.
