Nigel Carr Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State linebacker Nigel Carr was freed on a $15,750 bond after being jailed on five separate criminal allegations, including two felony charges, authorities said Monday.

Carr was arrested by Tallahassee police Sunday on two counts of auto burglary, criminal mischief, credit card theft and fraud. A police report said items taken from a vehicle were found in a trash bin at Carr's apartment complex, leading to his arrest.

First-year coach Jimbo Fisher, who was in North Carolina attending his inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference football kickoff, said the 230-pound junior would be disciplined in accordance to the university's athletics code of conduct.

"If it's a felony, it's an automatic suspension," Fisher said Monday. "It only takes one incident. You've got to make choices and there's repercussions, good or bad."

It's the first time since replacing Bobby Bowden in January that Fisher has had a player arrested on felony charges.

"They're going to make bad choices at times, and we're going to help steer them in the right direction," Fisher said. "Allegations like that can ruin a young man's life or derail it."

A police report also noted Carr was arrested shortly before midnight on July 22 and charged with possession of marijuana and pleaded with police not to take him to jail.

"No, no," Carr said when being handcuffed that night. "I can't go to jail."

A sympathetic officer then agreed to issue a notice to appear since Carr had no previous record and was cooperative, the police report said.

Florida State officials declined to make Carr available for comment.

Carr, 20, was named the Seminoles most dependable linebacker in spring practice and was slated to begin the season as their starting strong side linebacker.

Carr played in all 13 games last season for the Seminoles and was credited with 26 tackles, which was 10th best on a team that finished 7-6.

His backup on Florida State's depth chart, senior Mister Alexander, is regarded a superior pass rusher from the position.

what do you expect from the Criminoles?

As an avid FSU supporter, I hope Jimbo follows Bobby's past examples in punishing this guy. He should be unable to participate in the first quarter of the first game! The entire first quarter, mind you. Plus, he should be forced to walk out of the tunnel at that first game last! He can not lead the team in any way for the entire first half. (He can walk out first at the start of the second quarter, but again, not the first).

I think that'll send a message to the rest of FSU's players that bad conduct will not be tolerated!

As a Gator fan, I really miss Bobby.

Is there something in the water down there in Florida that makes their "student/athletes" commit various and sundry felonies?

I hear these stories all the time about young college players involved in this or that...they should pay these up and coming athletes something...why should the NCAA get all the money?

Let's see, they get tuition, room and board (better rooms and better food than the college norm), books, all fees, classroom necessities (pens, paper, etc.), medical benefits (for all reasons - not just sports related), and a desktop/laptop PC for their use.

For an in-state (Florida) athlete at a Florida public university, this is about $12,000 - $15,000 per year. For an out of state athlete, that's about $25,000 - $30,000 a year. If you get into private schools with no in-state cost benefit like the University of Miami, you can easily double these amounts.

It seems to me they are already being paid.

Thanks for stating the obvious...

But why do they do what they do?

I suppose you have a point, but geez, this is an odd place to make it. Of course he committed felonies, he's being cheated out of money by the NCAA!

You can take a thug off of the streets but you can't take the streets out of the thug.

He's from Wakulla County... If you know FL geography, that ain't exactly the streets... More like the cow pasture.

I shudder to imagine what he'd be up to if college football was not a distraction.

Wow, 6 whole months without having a player arrested for a felony. Way to go, coach!

Is it worth putting them in athletic uniforms? Habitual criminals with victims belong safely in prison. In China, where these guys are lucky not to be, they would simply be shot to save food and housing expenses

Yeah, my college team (KU) keeps it's criminals in the ticket office !
