Psychic Animals (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 7/27/10   Updated: 5/25/11

We know that animals can be extremely intuitive creatures. Whether you think that snakes can sense impending natural disasters, or that a cat predicted 50 deaths at a single nursing home or that a chicken typed out winning lottery numbers on a calculator, humans invest a lot of trust in animals and increasingly acknowledge bizarre animal behavior as forecasts of the future.

Check out our slideshow of seven impressive animals that may have predicted the future. Don't forget to vote on your favorite and, as always, tell us about your favorite animals that make predictions in the comments.

Oscar The Cat Has Predicted 50 Deaths At A Nursing Home
1 of 8
Oscar the Cat has sensed 50 deaths at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. On a typical day, Oscar remains distanced from patients except for those few who face hours until death. The cat keeps vigil, remaining by their sides until they pass. Read an article about Oscar's psychic talents by Dr. David Dosa, geriatrician at the Center. Dr. Dosa published a book, "Making the Rounds With Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat."

My cat sat vigil with my mother when she was dying. He sat on the windowsill beside when she laid down to take a nap and didn't leave her until the undertakers arrived.

My other cat can sense when someone is depressed. He sits on their feet :)

I think it's funny how quick humans are to explain what we can't readily explain as in some way being supernatural. This is the source of all myth and religion, and is why science and reason pose a direct threat to superstition.

For example, the cat has been called psychic. We know cats have much more tuned senses than we do. They are also predators, hard core predators. Is it surprising for a predator to be able to sense (whether by smell, sight, or hearing) when another animal is about to die? This seems like an instinctual predatory response to me. The cat is used to these people, and can probably notice minute changes that we can't.

The epilepsy dogs probably sense (as in one of the five senses) changes in human physiology that they know are off for the people they care for. As with most animals, they are habit prone, and prefer patterns. They undoubtedly can tell when physiological patterns are a little off.

Seismic snakes are easy to explain because they spend their entire lives sensing minute vibrations in the earth.

It just seems that a lot of these responses are instinctual and have probably been selected for (though not exactly as we perceive them) over millions of years because of their obvious benefits to survivability.

I have an open mind about this stuff, but I think we should see if we can find a rational explanation before writing off anything that we can't explain as mystical.

The dogs are trained to sense small changes that indict electric charges preceding a seizure.

This is why I love and have deep respect for all insects, animals, plants and fellow humans. Apparently, many of my fellow humans do not share this sentiment. Animals have a sixth sense which we are only now starting to understand...the cat is a perfect example of this sense. The field of consciousness is vast and wide, permeating all things. Animals act on info from this field, I believe. Some humans can as well. Many don't know or even believe in the existence of this field. We're starting to learn about it only NOW! LOL It's truly amazing.

we had a cat predict and plan for it's own death.

our 25 year old cat had adopted the old couple next door.

one day the cat brought home a stray cat of about the same size.

months later, our cat died.

You know it is strange that we are so quick to dismiss a cat predicting death, yet accept a dog predicting a seizure. Dogs are so amazing in this respect. They actually can scent out disease. I'm gonna have to think this whole thing over again.

Predicting death in an old folks' home isn't that impressive. Let me know when you find an animal who can predict the stock market.

You need to read the article on this cat. It's very impressive. This cat predicts deaths within hours. He only goes into the room and jumps up on the bed and lays with the person when their death is imminent within hours - even though the staff is unaware. The staff knows to call the family to come when they see the cat on the person's bed. When they try to get the cat to lie with other patients who they think are near death, he jumps right down and leaves the room. He knows. Some say it is the smell of someone right before they die. Who knows? But he's the only one who does it.

But how accurate are the hyenas?

And are they carnivores (more likely half a bowl) or omnivores (more likely all of the bowl)?

You forgot the jackass that predicted the coming of Glenn Beck. He wasn't psychic, though. They were just raised together on the same farm.

Nothing surprises me. It is the arrogance of mankind that keeps us from seeing what animals can do. I have diabetes and there have been times my dogs have made so much noise at nite I will wake up to them sitting by my bedside staring at me. It's then that I will realize my sugars seem low, I check and sure enough they are. Coincidence?

My wife is diabetic (was actually, she got a kidney/pancreas transplant 9 years ago and has been insulin independent ever since). We have a cat who would wake me up with a strange meow in the middle of the night when my wife was having low blood-sugar episodes. Franny, our cat, only made that specific sound when my wife was having blood-sugar issues.
