Least Surprising: Alaska. Duh. Lowest population density = slow internet speed.
Most Surprising: D.C.

I live in Montana and I can't believe we're not in the top ten. Probably decided that since we have less than a million people in the entire state, we were too insignificant to count.

you realize that AK has less than 1 million people, right??

just type slow and in caps when communicating to people in those states, they'll eventually get a vague idea of what you're saying.

Who needs internet in Alaska when you can get a "worldview" of Russia from the porch?

Did Palin actually say that?

East asian countries have had high speed Internet (DS 1Mbps plus) even in "rural" areas for most of this decade. This has everything to do with bad public policy in the US, mostly at the federal level, and little to do with population density or the expense of rolling out the technology. It's yet another example of legislation for sale, in this case to the large incumbent telecoms. Sure glad I don't live there.

I'm not saying you're completely wrong, but there's more to it than that.

Just look at the U.S. on a globe and then look at (for example) S.Korea. Even in rural S.Korea, you're probably not more than 100 miles from a major urban area.

Alaska #1 for slow movement of information.

Well folks, that explains how Sarah Palin was governor of that state for part of a term.

Glaciers move faster than our internet here in Alaska!
NaBa   02:33 AM on 7/29/2010
sure enough! before I even clicked on the article, I already knew we were going to be #1. it's abysmal.

What bothers me is some Repubs oppose broadband initiatives because Obama is for it. Slow internet speed hurts business and isolates rural people. We should be glad some people are still willing to live in rural areas. Most of the young rural people want out. The young are not satisfied with listening to Rush on the AM radio 3 hrs. a day in East TX!
hoovermatt08   07:31 AM on 7/30/2010
Especially since we can listen to him, Glenn, and Sean on FM 3 hrs each.

It has nothing to do with living in a rural area...I lived in a very rural area for a few years in the middle of nowhere in NY...and was able to get very high speed internet through Time Warner Cable.

Alaska the slowest!!!! Wow, how convenient. The ditz Sarah Palin, was Governor for half a term, Guess you can chock up another issue with Governor Ditz. But then again, she probably didn't want her constituents know the slug like pace, of Alaska, is slow for a reason, she couldn't understand the internet even if she could see it outside her door!

My complaint is with Huffington Post....the most script laden overburdened freeze-up while it reloads website available. That I tolerate it is a testament to how much I love it. It's so busy doing something that it can't be closed...a real bummer at work.
