Anthony Weiner Goes Ballistic At GOP For Killing 9/11 Responders Health Care Bill (VIDEO)

House Republicans late Thursday were able to corral enough votes to defeat a bill that would have provided up to $7.4 billion in aid to those sickened by toxins resulting from the 9/11 attacks.

In the process, they set off a host of fiery speeches and denunciations from their Democratic colleagues and produced a veritable YouTube moment from Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y), whose district includes many of the affected.

At the heart of the debate was a procedural maneuver made by Democrats to suspend the rules before consideration of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The move allowed leadership to block potential GOP amendments to the measure (there was worry that Republicans would attach something overtly partisan in hopes that it could pass on the otherwise widely-popular measure). It also meant that the party needed a two-thirds majority vote.

When the final tally was announced, there were 255 representatives for the measure, 159 against. The defeat of the bill, which would have provided free health care to those affected during the 9/11 rescue and recovery, likely means that the court system will have to settle compensation issues.

Weiner spoke right before the vote when it was clear that Republican lawmakers would stake their opposition on grounds of procedural concerns. But for the grace of the C-SPAN cameras, he managed to stay physically behind his lectern.

"The gentleman will sit!" he declared at one point, addressing, it is believed, Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.). "The gentleman is correct in sitting!"

All in all, the Rethug's haven't realized that they shouldn't have crossed Bloomberg, of all people, on this. Little do they know but will come the mid-terms. Now, of course we also realize the Party of No was looking for an additional "angle" on this bill, right? They wanted to attach an amendment or two to it that would benefit them in some way. However, not seeing beyond how any bill will directly  Read More...

To maintain decorum and coherence when one is furious shows great personal strength. Anthony Weiner is heroic and shows how lousy House Republicans truly are.

If that was passionate, I don't want to see him get mad! Good job!

The passion this guy showed is the type of passion needed by a ton of other Congressmen/women. And he makes a valid point, he tells em to vote straight, (which is obviously a long shot because its congress and they couldnt do anything straight even if they were frozen stiff). No only did he effectively expose the 'Stallers' he also gained some great air time and public exposure, which will comfort the american people and ensure them that hey atleast somebody else cares.....

Typical liberals - always demanding that the morally correct thing is done. Fighting for good with no regard for greed.

He's 'lost it' for sure this time around. He needs help. Wish him a speedy and complete recovery and return to normal mental and emotional health. Anthony, we all want to see you get it back together again this time.

If a bill providing healthcare to people who responded to one of our worst national attacks is at risk of being shot down because it would close a tax loophole companies use through offshore accounts, or because they don't want illegal immigrants who responded to be provided with healthcare, and you *aren't* mad enough to shout at those people, I would argue that *you* are the one who "lost it."

madhabits   08:11 AM on 8/06/2010
Are you saying he lost it because he was getting passionate about helping people who were hurt during the 9/11 attacks?

Imagine his frustration when it's killed over such a shickenchit procedural move..

I am so sorry to read of the death of the LAWYERS WELFARE BILL'S demise. After all this was all about money for trial lawyers and a little baksheesh to the "vicitims."

Is that what Guru Beck told you?

What is a "vicitim?"

LOL.

Gotta love the HuffPost headline "GOP for killing 9/11 Responders Health Care Bill".

Please. There's a bit more to it than that. Misleading.

There goes the conservatives showing their true colors again. Reading some of the comments I noticed that most are over looking the fact that many people ran in to help at ground zero that weren't on the city's payroll. There were also a lot of people that helped out in other areas because help was needed, and this went on for day if not weeks.
Even some of the city workers were laid off because of the medical problems they now have due to what they endured cleaning up that mess.
What is it teaocons, love them at the time and forget about them later? Now thats the true American Christian mentally!

Taxpayers have a right -- and duty -- to ask questions about how their money is spent.

Lawyers stand to make about a billion dollars if this bill is passed and that's obscene. It's also something you seem to be in denial about.

You also ignore the fact that the City of New York has an $800 million fund in place to help these people. It's a fund that pays the lawyers far less. It's a fund with REAL safe-guards against fraud built in. Finally, it's a fund that if required, can pay a properly vetted claimant up to one million dollars or more.

So, yes, we're deeply concerned the bill you're touting is poorly crafted and wasteful one.

I had to check myself. I was going a little overboard on Rep. Weiner and Sen. Schumer.

As someone pointed out, a military background is no guarantee a person is quality. Hell, Hitler was a WWI decorated hero.

I think what made me go ballistic is what I read about the lawyers involved in this case.
