Mike Tyson Sports Illustrated Interview

Not long after doing an interview in which he called his life a "f--king waste," former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson sat down for another conversation, this time with Pablo S. Torre of Sports Illustrated.

Tyson reflected on being a former drug addict and his life living in Las Vegas. He says he would start his days by going to a club at 2 o'clock a.m.

"I'd be sitting down and drinking and doing cocaine, talking to girls, doing anything. Everything," said Tyson. "Then I make it home and I'm tripping out at home."

He went onto say that he doesn't know how it happened, but he is very "fortunate" to have his wife and kids, living a very different life.

"If I allowed my will to run riot, this house would be full, you'd hear people screaming from sex upstairs," Tyson explained. "If I allowed my mind to run riot, that's what this place would be like."

Check out the full SI interview here.

I hate to say this but it would not suprise me if one day I woke and the headline read "Former Boxing Champ Mike Tyson found dead".

My favorite Mike Tyson quote of all time is..." Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth".

Mike Tyson has traveled to the depths of depravity and despair, and is sincerely trying to figure it all out. The fact that he's still alive is almost miraculous.

I (now)respect and admire him, and I hope that he finds peace in his life...

A couple years ago I heard the greatest Mike Tyson quote ever. After chasing a prowler out of his neighborhood Mike Tyson said, "I'm the neighborhood watch, I'm like Spiderman."

Love you Iron Mike.

The most telling section of the SI Interview is when Mike Tyson is speaking of rehab:

"This is what I realized, bro: It gives people family. A way of starting over. [In rehab] we start a new life with new family members. And all they gotta do to stay in this family is not get high, and you gotta try really hard. And then if you do get high? "We got your back." That's what I like.

And then you look at Tyson's experience with Family;

His father left when he was two.
His mother died when he was 16.
His adoptive father (Cus D'Amato) died in 1985 one year before he became Heavy Weight Champion. (Tyson was 19 when D'Amato died)
Jim Jacobs (Cus D'Amato's partner) died of Leukemia in 1988 two years after Tyson fist won the Heavyweight Championship.

Late in 1988 Tyson fired Bill Clayton (The remaining partner of the "D'Amato Team") and Kevin Rooney (Tyson's original trainer).

He then joined the Don King Family, and it was all downhill from there.

Tyson's descent into Hell began the day D'Amato died.

Cus recognized that Mike was a child. One with extraordinary gifts, but one who needed a great deal of supervision and education, having come off of the mean streets of Brooklyn.

Jacobs and Clayton were only interested in how much money they could make off of Mike. King was the most flamboyant of the users, but they all saw him as an ATM.

He made many mistakes in his life, as he now readily admits, but I seriously doubt that any of us could have done much better, given the vermin that surrounded him and the environment that spawned him.

What Tyson is saying and doing now is extraordinary. I'm firmly in his corner...

Really? I wonder, now that I'm older, just how much concern did D'Amato have for Tyson? Did he also tell Tyson to get an education? Did he also tell him to be wise with his money and not live a foolish life? Or, did he just teach Mike how to box?

lj9283...........Dead on the money!!! Don King was nothing but BAD NEWS for Mike and losing Rooney finished him off.

I thought that the Brother was still a Muslim! The teachings that helped to reform many would do him to revisit the teachingd in order to save his life. Whoredom and substance abuse is not the way to go and his life has been one big battle with a multitude of trials and tribulations. I hope that he can clears his mind and change for his sake and the sake of his family! Go back to Islam Brother!

Being in recovery does not mean you can't be Muslim.
10:16 AM on 08/02/2010
It is true to a point! If Mike has stopped praying and practicing the tenets of Islam, he is out according to the hadiths. Also, there is a hadith that states that when a Muslim commits a grave sin such as fornication (zeena in Arabic), he did as a non Muslim. Since I am going by his admitted actions and not mentioning Islamic tenets, or expressing Islamic thoughts, I posted according to his statement!

I wouldn't mind a video game about Tyson's career that was a cross between Heavy Rain and Fight Night

It would detail Tyson's boxing career and throughout the game you would have to make choices and whatever choice you made affected the outcome of the entire game

If they came out with Mike Tyson Punchout today it would be like that Blitz game that had LT in it.
