The stores in Los Feliz and Echo Park may get more press, but Silver Lake's quirky, standout shops deserve the spotlight. From top-rated bar gear and home decor to makeup, wine, cheese and a combo lingerie/flower shop, there's always something cool for the buying at these Silver Lake shops.

ReForm School rules! And now there's an extension called "Home Ec," devoted to--you guessed it--crafts. It's genius, really. Those who can't craft will just go back to the OG shop and buy everything from stationery to home decor.

Wow, a list of stores selling things no one needs. How clever.

So great to see so many of our favorite shops in Silver Lake mentioned. Silver Lake is a very unique community and very self sustaining.

Bittersweet Butterfly was also nominated for best international lingerie shop, so this is not random.
up against boutiques all over the world. their selection is fabulous. it's hard to choose, the nabe is so great, but this is def one of the stand-outs.

The caption on Reform School is way incorrect.

Originally Reform School and Home Ec opened together in the same space, but then they had a falling out and Home Ec moved across the street. And then Home Ec closed last month.

They only missed the biggest awesomestore: Wacko/Luz de Jesus. And Ozzie Dots is right next door.

You forgot Mondo Video.

Video Journeys? Though that's not really a shop, but a DVD/VHS rental store.

If you're talking about the Mondo Video on Melrose, it's been closed for more than a year.

Was the Soap Plant in Silverlake? I seem to remember going there in the early 80s, there wasn't a whole lot there at that time.

Soap Plant WAS in Silver Lake on Sunset before they moved to Melrose.
Now there back in their old neighborhood a few blocks from their original location.

Soap Plant is in Los Feliz, not Silver Lake.

These shops seem pretty pointless to me... much like the entire area of Silverlake.

Keep spending drones... keep spending!

Extortion rate trinkets, wine and cheese for hipsters who still live on their parent's dime.
12:39 AM on 08/01/2010
Parent-subsidized hipsters are only a portion of those who go in the shops. The hills are filled with professionals, and they shop in the neighborhood. It's one of the best community neighborhoods in LA - and the hipsters here get $3.99 bottles of wine at the Trader Joe's on Hyperion. If you lived here, things might look different to you.

No kidding. Whenever I see these stores I think there's no way they can make money and their parents just set them up in the business to keep them busy and out of rehab.

I dont live in the area but my office isnt to far so occasionally my co workers and I might head up Hillhurst for lunch. I saw a shop on the corner of Sunset/Hollywood and Hillhurst that I was offended by and not much offends me. I kept looking because I was mesmerized by the stores banner (and I was at a very long red light). Either the owners are just plain stupid or they were born lacking a sensitivity gene. Its a picture hanging store called the Hanging Co and on its blue banner it had a huge hanging noose. Am I just too old (40s) for the day and time to know that still has a lot of negative connotations for people?!

This list was compiled by someone who likes new plastic stuff that ends up in yard sales. I second the shout out to The Cheese Store of Silver Lake, but seriously the biggest ommission is Serifos, the truly eclectic gift shop that started the whole Silver Lake/Sunset Junction renaissance - best card selection in LA - and the owner who makes all the jewelry is the nicest. And Ragg Mopp Vintage which has the best selection of vintage clothes east of La Brea. And Secret Headquarters, the awesome comic book store.
04:40 PM on 07/31/2010
Yes, that's right, how could I forget? Serifos is great. She brings back cool stuff from France. Ragg Mopp also has great stuff, and I'm so proud we have our own comic book store!

I agree, his purses are quite amazing! And he seems to be very nice and humble, too! I also love the Casbah Cafe's little store, even better.

So glad to see Matrushka in there! Laura Howe's store is great. But how did you miss The Cheese Store? Pricy, but no worries, the 99 cent holds down the other end of our strip. The Spice Station is pretty interesting too.
