Top 5 Things No One Told You To Bring To College: HerCampus List

First Posted: 07/31/10 11:37 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:15 PM ET

Our friends at HerCampus know college backward and forward -- mostly because they're there. With the start of school looming, HerCampus correspondent Gabriela Szewcow devised a list of must-haves for your dorm room. See her full list here -- and add your own trusty essential in the comments section.

Quarters
1 of 6
You will be doing a lot of laundry in college. And you’ll run out of quarters much quicker than you think. So I’d suggest bringing a few rolls of quarters that will at least last you until Thanksgiving break. Then you can go home and get mom and dad to fill up your rolls with some more quarters. Because trust me, you’ll be needing them.

foam earplugs for sleeping! Even though I went to college in the middle of nowhere, my dorm was right on the main highway in and out of town so traffic noise was constant, the noise of your dorm neighbors, and keep you from hearing your roommate's late night phone conversations with her boyfriend!

Brita filter--Thiskind of looks like product placement in what is supposed to be useful information. I sent my daughter to state school, the refrigerated bubblers (water fountains) are excellent, and they are free. Free.

When I dormed at Southampton College, LIU, the one thing everyone seemed to know to bring, but I didn't have were cinder blocks of all things. Stick your bed up on them and you have a ton more space under it.

Now, those dorms were HUGE by comparison to other dorms I saw after. (My bedroom at home is about 20 x 16, and the dorm room I had there makes this look small) but you know what? It still helped a lot. Mini fridge under your bed, milk crates to store anything from books, to VHF tapes (DVDs were just starting to get popular), or ungodly amounts of cup 'o noodles and Ramen noodles... Those cinder blocks came in handy there- they would be a real life saver in actual dorm sized rooms.

"Do you really want to drink that?"

Gimme a break.

Brita filters really improve the quality of water. Especially the kind of water that doesn't freeze in the freezer. You can turn cheap water into classy high-end water.

Haha! Cornell has a swipe-card laundry system...I guess that's where the admins have been spending our tuition dollars! Priorities are everything, they say!

Swipe care laundry actually makes a lot of sense. I would have loved it.

A hammer and a screwdriver. I met every person in my college dorm because I was "the girl with the hammer." First impressions are everything!

Hand tools definitely are handy! I was "the chick with the tools" in my dorm. The guys were always borrowing them. In fact, my cousin had her own drill for her room!

Job 39:5 - Who has sent out the wild ass free?

You will need a stapler. Lot's handed in on line but there are going to be hand written papers and lab reports to hand in as well and if you hand in a stack of lose sheets you look like you don't care. As for the quarters, colleges often have free laundry services or no charge washers and driers and just add the cost to the room fee. This cuts down on the piles of stinky laundry in the dorms.

umm yea, I'd like a list of these colleges that offer free laundry service. It will be quite short.

Well that has been my experiences with places my children have gone Coe College (free washers and driers) and Davidson College (laundry service plus free washers and driers). I do not have that many kids so others need to help me out where.

Wow. They sure didn't have that when I was in college. I used to time my classes around when the machines would be free.

The portable flashdrive is a MUST. Especially having several paper to write coupled with online notes. I have definitely given my flash drive a workout.
