How will flying as we know it look in the future? Imagine a personal plane that fits one person only, or jets that fly by flapping their wings.

According to these incredible concepts for the planes of the future, the next generation of air travel is likely to be more comfortable, more eco-friendly, quieter, and more personal than every before.

NASA Solar Flapper
1 of 12
The NASA Solar Flapper is an unconventional concept for a plane that would use solar power and flapping of the aircraft's "wings" to propel itself up and forward. One blog writes, "This flight vehicle would integrate airfoil, propulsion, energy production, energy storage, and control into one seamless design with no conventional mechanical moving parts."

HMM
Let's see now we are at peak oil right now, we have NO plans for alternative energy to take the place of oil so our present economic system will remain intact. Yet we will magically build these aircraft with the existing oil based infrastructure. (with no oil to run it)
Yep they are invisible, we will never have the energy to build them, because we will be 'wasting' all the available energy to feed ourselves.

Some of these are really nifty looking, but the first one? "Honey, look! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a... gigantic flying tapeworm."

Some of these don't even look flight worthy unless there's a level of physics that we don't know of yet?

These things never change. Concept aircraft from the 1950s looked remarkably similar. Nothing like them ever comes close to realization.

"Luxury Blimp" sounds like my late lamented 1972 Coupe de Ville.

Like we laugh at Devinci's machines, people who live in year 3000 will laugh at our designs.

I am. It's a little-known fact that he killed at parties. His catchphrase, "Hey, Mona, who's your daddy?" (É Mona, chi è il tuo papà?) swept the caffes of Venice in 1483.

I designed on of those novel space shuttles years ago, and nobody had the money to fund it.

You can't get funding for origami.

There were only 3 I could see variations of. The 2 MIT versions, as long as they are not too wide, if they are too wide could be hard to use at existing airports. Then the most likely is the Airbus version, first off since they already make planes, this makes sense and it is the most "plane" like. Those are the only 3 that seem commercially viable. The rest are either neat to look at or more novelties. A person plane? Neat, but not commercial enough.

Plus...it isn't a Luxury Blimp....It is a Rigid Airship.

So what about way in the future when we can just be beamed to where we want to go ala Star Trek.

Which one doesn't crash and burn? I'm still waiting for the airplane made out of that black box material.
