One of Denver's most colorful historic homes is for sale this summer. The Richthofen Castle, built by Walter von Richthofen--uncle of the famed World War I pilot known as the Red Baron--from 1878 to 1887 has been listed by its owners, who are looking to downsize.

The castle, which is located in the East Denver neighborhood of Montclair, was modeled after the Richthofen Castle in Germany. The 35-room home was the site of one of Colorado's most infamous murders in 1911 (that of Charles Patterson by his wife, Gertrude) and has since been rumored to be haunted.

The Richthofen Castle is listed at $3.9 million, but the owners say they will throw in some of their Red Baron historical memorabilia for an extra $2 million.

The only thing haunted about this place is the extraordinarily frightful, quasi-antique, unduly ornate mass of clutter that poses as furnishings. The present owner attempted to turn the place into a 'Bed and Breakfast', as one poster suggested he would want to do, but the community rallied against it and, in the end, wouldn't allow it. So much for that pipe dream. Part of the beauty of this dilapidated house, strangely, is it's state of disrepair. Clearing away the overgrown yard would only erase what antiquated charm that remains, converting it into yet another sanitized, manicured, "flipped', characterless, older incarnation of the deplorable "McMansion" real estate culture which the last fifteen years of pervasive, uninspired, bald-face opportunism has helped to create and from which many of us hope we transcend into a new view of living and appreciation of historical buildings.

D-Rod, were you the party that had to be chased off the top of the fence before you impaled yourself?
That would easily explain your tirade here and complete ignorance of the rich and wonderful history of Richthofen.

I'm rather an expert on the subject and I believe you misunderstood my comment. You might want to read it again.

Wish I had the money to establish it as a B&B and rental for private events, awesome location! It could be the Lowry-North equivalent of the Phipps Mansion.

I'd like to buy a haunted castle. Unfortunately, my salary only supports a very non-haunted ranch style.

How come in the horror movies the guy always gets a "great deal" on the house because it's supposed to be haunted, but in reality, people pay more more the stories that are used as a marketing tool?

You can call it a castle - doesn't mean it is.

I went to grade school a few blocks from the castle and got invited into it for Halloween when my girlfriend and I dressed as some playing cards like the ones from Alice in Wonderland. They loved our outfits! A friend from grade school lived in the carriage house.
It is way cool .
There are lots of stories about the place and the big homes in the Montclair neighborhood.

I grew up in the carriage house. Wonder which of the 5 of us your friend was. Love to pass your name along if you're willing to give it.

I grew up near it also. I love the Montclair area...went to St James. I would love to spend the night in the castle. it is fun to share our history with transplants...not all of Colorado history is downtown.

Love the exterior - the interior is hideous.

Ha ha. I have lived in Denver for more than 50 years and I am very familiar with the castle and its history. This is the first I heard of it possibly being haunted.

Aren't all castles haunted, as a rule?

All the available science supports the theory that Casper himself haunted one or more castles.

That is very sad...a friend and I played tourist on Saturday and went to the Royal Gorge. I was talking to a young mother who was born here and it was the first time she had been there-in fact-never knew of it. I started giving her places to go to that we took our kids to when they were growing up...Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Will Rodgers memorial-she had never even been over Trail Ridge or to Estes???
The only good coming out of this economy is that more people are discovering their state...I saw more Colorado plates than out of state.
