Stephen Colbert Compares Bush Tax Cuts To Digesting Bud Light Lime (VIDEO)

First Posted: 8/2/10 Updated: 5/25/11

In a recent edition of his daily segment "The Word," Stephen Colbert hilariously skewered, by turns, "trickle-down economics," the GOP stance on the deficit and the Bush-Era tax cuts, which may repealed by Congress (Hat tip to The Big Picture).

The so-called "tax bomb" that will be unleashed by expiration of the Bush tax cuts for America's wealthy has been the subject of concern by many on the right. Colbert's advice was to exclaim: "A tax bomb! Quick, rich people, to your tax shelters!"

Turning to the trickle down theory, Colbert compared the idea that tax breaks for the rich would stimulate the economy to, well, digesting a Bud Light Lime. We'll let him explain further:

"The bigger my tax cut is, the more money I can pour into the system," Colbert said, taking a swig of the Bud Light. "Then very soon the benefits will work the way through the system and trickle down -- I mean like a racehorse. Then the other 97 percent of poorer Americas are welcome to have as much of that as they can collect."

As the old story went, a city slicker once went up to a farmer selling apples, inquiring on the price. "$2 a bushel", said the farmer.
"What, that's so much! Don't you have less expensive ones?" asked the CS.
To which the farmer replied, "Well, if you're willing to take some that have gone through the horse once, they're a little cheaper".

An absolutely excellent dismantling of trickled-on economics. The Daily Show and Colbert do satire better than just about anyone these days, although Maher is in that group as well.....

Brilliant!

The wealthy are interested only in keeping their status. If they are not forced to invest they will not. As Bush number 1 said, trickle down economics is voodoo economics.

“I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country.

Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money-power of the country will endeavor to prolong it's reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.”

Only HuffComposters would take seriously economic analysis from Colbert. Pathetic.

Seriously,
1) can you state anything he said that was out of context or false;
2) doesn't your post mean that you are a HuffComposter too?

More reliable and to the point that what you will find on faux nooz. So why not? Since reason has failed parody can be the best approach. Comedy is known to reach many who couldn't be reached any other way. We can only hope! The court jester was known to be able to speak many unspeakable truths although it sometimes got him killed. Colbert doesn't have to worry about being killed by the king anyway. There are the teabaggers, birthers, NRA nuts to keep your eye on though.

Since Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of Budweiser, was sold to InBev, a Belgian company, I would say that the product placement was a nice little Easter Egg of satire.

It's so interesting to see and read about the strategy of the Republicans to regain power(remember it's all about them regaining power, NOT about how to help or fix this country). And more and more you hear about this new thing called TAX CUTS for the rich. Boy, this group is original. Obviously, this hasn't really worked since the Reagan years, when the trickled down theory was introduced to the public. But in a way I guess it did work, because in all those years I worked, I certainly felt like I was being trickled on.
05:07 AM on 08/05/2010
It might work ... if the society is dummmb enough to buy into this trickle down economy again.

What does the new, Corporate Republican Party say about this? Corporate Republican Party loved given socialism of $3.8 Trillion in tax cuts to only 2% of citizens. Why the Nation had to borrow money from China, plus interest, because the, Corporate Republican Party, lost the Nation in Tax Revenues $3.8 Trillion dollars in 10 years. Corporate Republican Party, figured out how to give out socialism and borrow at the same time right?.

A million dollars in the hands of one person may mean that they have one car and one home. They may have more than that, but that is all they really need. A million dollars in the hands of ten people equals 10 cars and ten homes. A million dollars in the hands of one person equals one person who buys food and the essentials such as electricity and the likes. A million dollars in the hands of 10 people means that ten people are buying food and their essentials.

I so agree....besides aren't they just going from 35% to 39% tax rate?....don't think that would alter anyone's spending/hiring plans....
07:20 PM on 08/03/2010
Corporate Republican Party should of gave tax cuts to all middle class Americans, instead of just 2% $3.8 Trillion dollars, economy would of been off the charts, if 300 million middle class got $3.8 Trillion instead.

This reminds me of a comment I read on the eulogy for HumeSkeptic:

In Hume’s memory, we should get together for a kegger and then head out to Reagan’s grave.
