Naomi Campbell Photo Ban: No Pictures Allowed While Supermodel Enters, Leaves Blood Diamond Trial

Naomi Campbell Photo Ban

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — War crimes judges on Tuesday ordered special security measures for fashion model Naomi Campbell when she testifies at the trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor, barring photographers from catching her entering or leaving the courtroom.

The judges say Campbell's fears for her safety and privacy are legitimate because of her high profile and the intense media interest in her appearance.

In its ruling, the Special Court for Sierra Leone instructed authorities to ensure that no one photograph, video tape or even sketch Campbell in or around the courtroom.

Her testimony, however, will be recorded as usual by courtroom cameras.

She is due to appear Thursday, but judges have not yet decided on a motion submitted last week by Taylor's lawyers to delay her appearance.

Measures to protect witnesses in war crimes cases are routine, especially when disclosure of their identity could subsequently endanger them or their families. Such witnesses testify under pseudonyms and with their images blurred in recordings of their testimony.

But blocking the media from photographing a known witness is highly unusual.

The court did not go as far as Campbell had wanted. She had asked the judges for a gag order on all information "gleaned about her stay at the court" apart from her public testimony.

Campbell was summoned to testify about whether she received diamonds from Taylor after a celebrity-studded dinner in South Africa in 1997. Taylor is accused of trading in "blood diamonds" in exchange for helping rebel factions during the 11-year civil war in Sierra Leone. He has denied possessing such conflict diamonds.

The court granted Campbell's request to have a lawyer present, but restricted the attorney's intervention to protecting her from possible self-incrimination on the stand.

If she isn't throwing a phone at someone it just isn't as interesting.

I guess the war crimes judges don't get out much - we all know what Naomi Campbell looks like - so there is no need to "protect" her from having her picture taking going in and out of court.

It's funny that they would make this into a story because it's really only the paparazzi that care about this.

Naomi Campbell is prima facie evidence that no amount of outward beauty can cover for a wretched, ugly, and empty soul.

I am inclined to agree with you. This woman has hardly shown any redeeming qualities, human, plant or rock, since she has been in the public eye.

Do you know her personally or are you just showing your own wretchedness based on the negative-centric media coverage she gets? I do NOT condone her anger tantrums but Naomi has done plenty humanitarian works that she hardly ever gets credit for. Believe it or not, she's probably one of the most active philanthropic supermodels out there.

Bummer! I would love to see what fashion statement she'll make. You know, without a doubt, that Naomi is going to strut in and out of court in some head-turning outfit and high heels. You can bet on that.

And she'll throw her cell phone at (and open a can of whoopass on) any photographer who violates the judge's order.

typical judge

give special treatment to celebrities and the elite

if me or you didn't want to be photographed, you know a judge wouldn't do anything about it

That was the only way that they could get her to testify against this guy. That hardly qualifies as special treatment, as she is not the one on trial.

Of course the court could have refused to meet her demands, but then she could have just refused to testified. They obviously wanted her testimony badly enough.

The court would have done the same for you, if they wanted your testimony badly enough, although I don't think photographers would be trying to jump over each other in order to take your picture.

Simple as that.

I have seen many black women who are really beautiful, but she is not one of them. Obviously there are a lot of people who would disagree with me, but to each his own.

If you see her as beautiful, then that is all that should matter... to you. It's just that I disagree.

gonna have to agree she's hot
