New BlackBerry Vs. iPhone 4: How Does The BlackBerry Torch 9800 Slider Compare? (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/03/10 05:01 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:15 PM ET

RIM and AT&T just took the wraps off of a new BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry Torch 9800 Slider, that the maker claims is the "best BlackBerry ever."

But is it the best smartphone ever? We've taken a look at how the iPhone 4--described by some critics as the "best device in its class," but also plagued by reception problems--compares to the BlackBerry Torch.

Check out the new BlackBerry vs. iPhone 4 in the slideshow below, then see our guide to the BlackBerry Torch's features.

Price

The BlackBerry Torch costs $199 with a two year contract with AT&T. The 16GB iPhone 4 also runs $199 with an AT&T contract, although the 32GB version is slightly more expensive ($299).

The data plan for both phones is the same: $15 a month for 200 MB of wireless data or $25 for 2 GB.

The iPhone doesn't multitask and doesn't even support microSDHC cards? What kind of joke is that? How can this toy be better than the BlackBerry?

I say keep the competition coming. Next stop: more carrier competition.

Its not about the handsets anymore, compare the OS with Android and maybe we can learn something.

This was a completely pointless review. At the end of the day, most of the major smart phones all have similar hardware. It's the OS we want reviewed. How is RIMs OS compared to iOS and Android? That's all that matters.
03:38 PM on 08/04/2010
They are both inefficient as long as they are connected to AT&T.

This review is utterly out of sync with the market trend today.

It is no longer a matter of hardware it's all about the software. The winner of the current smartphone OS race stands a good chance of becoming the next Microsoft. Who cares about Dell or HP these days? They are irrelevant to the evolution of the PC, whereas Microsoft's every move makes all the difference!

The same with smartphones, it doesn't matter what hardware Sony-Ericsson, Nokia, LG or Samsung or Apple or RIM produces. The 1 bn dollar question is who makes the most appealing piece of OS! Therefore comparing Torch's hardware with the I-phone is like comparing the hardware of a PC to Mac!

Personally I don't think that Apple can hold its ground for much longer. Android is catching up, OEMs tweaking hardware to seamlessly integrate with software. Also Apple's pricing policies will have a detrimental impact on the future of their products.

I understand your point, but people have said that about the iPod and Apples pricing (no unlimited plans, more expensive music downloads ect). At the end of the day the iPod was/is still the #1 MP3 player. You might be right, but I won't count Apple out until they are done. One thing Apple does better than anyone is making you feel that you need their product Just look at the face time, those commericals do a really good job at that, even though they aren't the first or the only to have that feature, but people don't know that.

I wasn't referring to their business to consumer pricing scheme (apologies for not being specific) I was referring to Apple's use of buyer power, they did squeeze every penny out of the music labels (all of them those who did have the money and those who didn't). With the i-phone they are offering slimmer profit margins to developers in comparison to RIM and Android Alliance. Another major let developer put off is Apple's controversial and sometimes downright bullying screening process.
This is why Android number of applications has virtually exploded in the last 2 years.

It won't be long before proud owners of the iPhone will have to find something else to make themselves feel 'special'.

I've been a long time dedicated BB user. When my beloved Curve began to fail me, I endured it's inconsistencies in the hope I could resurrect my faithful friend. Being an ATT customer, part of me was hoping for a decent Droid. Like the good friend it was, my BB held out until the Captivate entered in. It died one day after the captivate hit the stores. Can't begin to express my frustration with syncing issues. Of course, I use Outlook. I found Samsung Keis software.....user beware! Buggy, buggy, buggy! There's a reason Samsung is 'hiding' it. I found another app, Campionlink, and it's decent BUT I have to go through Google's gmail. It's been a nightmare! Lost contacts, strange configurations, I feel I'm caught in a war between Microsoft and Samsung and Google.....so today when I saw BB's new beauty, it left me with a difficult decision.....quicker internet, brighter screen vs old faithful? To make it worse....I like some of gmails options. Sigh.....too many good choices.

Note....iPhone isn't one of them. Why would I opt for a phone with less memory and less power (battery) options? BB or Android are the only two choices now.

I wish I had a dollar for every person who thought or said that Apple was on the way out. You people just don't get it....Apple is an innovator! Everyone else is just a copycat, especially Android.

Android brought something to the table that nobody else did.

Hardware Compatibility. Sure there was Symbian before them but symbian headsets were so varied and the OS itself came in many different flavours (UIQ for Motorola and Ericsson, S60 for Nokia and Samsung) that Symbian devices could not communicate with each other.
Android is the 1st OS to do what Microsoft and their OSs did for the computer. Establish a wide accepted industry standard and allow developers to focus on one product line rather that have a different WIP for different handsets.

Nobody ever said that Apple is on the way out. However they won't occupy the no.2 spot (best selling OS ) for longer. I see them a distant 3rd to RIM and Android.

Just tell me which one has the larger screen and that's the one I want - They are both basically the same, apps are apps and one can get whatever one wants, on either "phone" the ones that are really worth anything, most apps are a joke anyway... .... A keyboards means nothing to me besides being ugly and always there in the way and taking away from screen space.

Mate you have a phallic complex insofar as bigger is better.

The Captivate captivates screen size and quality. Hands down. However, for me, it's a balancing act between what is fun and what is important. Thus.....I headed down to the dealer and in my hot little hands I hold the Torch.....impressive. Internet was my biggest concern. Took it to a familiar difficult spot in the mall and it was very impressive! Quick. It's screen is smaller. Sad. I think the specs I read may have been wrong. It's smaller than the Captivate.

I'll use this for the next few days and see how it goes. So far, I feel like I have my old friend back who has been sent to the spa and is rejuvenated and ready to rumble.

Blackberry refuses to die.....and for that I'm grateful for the time being.

I hate the word smart phone. I haven't heard anybody say a smart thing over one of these in the many events I was forced to listen in. Also, holding a small nuclear power plant to your temple for hours at a time doesn't exactly strike me as a genius move.

Maybe this is because I have a Blackberry Storm 1 (the worst blackberry, from what I hear) that I'm replacing with a Droid X tomorrow, but I wouldn't recommend Blackberries. Sure, if you like a physical keyboard, and are using it for business, the blackberry might make sense. But otherwise, its like comparing MS DOS to a modern operating system. It just doesn't compete.

I always had difficulties with the tiny buttons on smartphones like the blackberry. I have the iPhone 4 and am really happy with it. Haven't even had reception issues (except in my house, which is a whole different pain in my back side)

I have had Blackberries for years now and love them. I never quite figured out the whole argument that an Iphone can multitask, making it sound like no other phone does. Blackberries have for years before the Iphone. I never see the Iphone taking the business market that Blackberry has but I never see Blackberry taking the casual smartphone market either, at least not with their current OS.

Must... figure out... how to appear "better" than my co-workers. Maybe I'll upgrade my phone to the latest $2,500.00 version. Then they'll take me seriously and like me.
01:14 PM on 08/04/2010
It doesn't make any difference which one of these phones is the 'best' to me. As long as they are exclusive to AT&T I won't be getting either one of them.

No contest. The Blackberry looks, well, like a cheap PC next to the iPhone.
