The 10 Poorest Countries In The World: Oxford University-U.N. (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/03/10 04:39 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:15 PM ET

Sub-Saharan Africa is the poorest region in the world, followed by South Asia, according to a new measure developed by Oxford University, with support from the U.N.

The measure, called the Multidimensional Poverty Index, or MPI, will replace the Human Poverty Index in the United Nations' upcoming Human Development Report, due out this October. (hat tip to The Economist)

For the past 13 years, the U.N.'s annual report has used the Human Poverty Index, which employs three basic dimensions -- length of life, knowledge and standard of living -- to measure poverty in developing nations.

But this year, the U.N. will use Oxford's Index: a "multidimensional picture of people living in poverty" that complements income measurements "by reflecting a range of deprivations that afflict a person's life," including whether a household has a decent toilet, clean water to drink within 30 minutes on foot, electricity, school-aged children enrolled in school and whether any member of a household is malnourished, say researchers.

A household is counted as "multidimensionally poor" if it is deprived of over 30 percent of the ten indicators used by the MPI. Of the 25 poorest countries researchers surveyed, 24 are located in Africa.

The countries below are, according to the MPI, the 10 poorest countries in the world:

10. Sierra Leone
1 of 11
81.5% Living In Poverty
53.4% Living On At Least $1.25 A Day
52.3% Deprived Of Drinking Water

How is Haiti not up here after being not only the poorest country in the West hemisphere but after that earthquake and the millions of displaced people?
05:55 PM on 08/15/2010
I'm so happy that my country Somalia is NOT #1. However, I am very sad about all the poverty in the world, especially Africa, which is supposedly to be the most richest continent in the world. God help these people, it's truly devasting.

What do these countries all have in common? Unregulated "free market" capitalism, like what the tea Baggers and Libertarians want for the US. A system where the rich get very, very rich and the poor are their slaves.

What is worrisome is that, America's middle class is also disappearing and soon if it is not stopped, the U.S will be like the poor nations where the rich controls everything.

Africans need to become Buddhists first. Then they should stop eating meat and cultivate and eat vegetables.

Are you serious? Do you really think that this is the answer to their problems? Africa would benefit more if people like you stopped benefiting from the theft of its natural resources and put your money where your mouth is. Most Africans have a vegetable-based diet. They eat far less meat than the average Westerner does. Why don't you save your message for those who it might actually help. Africa already cultivates MORE THAN ENOUGH vegetation to feed its people. However, much of it gets exported to other countries for the benefit of folks who have no problem exploiting the poor. Educate yourself before you make ignorant and class-privileged comments like this. Your religion won't save Africans from your stupidity, unfortunately.

It irritates me when I see comments that make it seem as if these people want their lives that way -- as if they don't want to develop their countries or educate themselves. Being American makes you no better than anyone else. You are here by chance, not by divine right. No one has a choice of where they are born. You play the cards you are dealt with. It doesn't take much to lose everything. Pride goeth before the fall.

Africa the riches continent on Earth has the most poorest Countries in the world???? The World has raped mother Africa for centuries so much we have no answers and let it continue. The chaos, corruption and terror in Africa is ALLOWED so other Nations can continue to profit under cloak hidden from the consciousness of the world. At one point the only roads in Africa were to carry the resources out to sea, whether resource be gold, diamonds or slaves. Black people were given so much by God; gold, diamonds, oil, furs, intelligence, extraordinary physical prowess, Egypt, Timbuktu but the world has gave them hell.....sad.
03:41 PM on 08/06/2010
Yes..all true.

But time for them get off their arse and improve.
05:07 PM on 08/06/2010
So just how should they improve as colonialization is still alive and strong. So should the Africans do as the Haitians did to France to all oppressing Nations? All Countries have imports but when an African Nation refuses to allow other Nations to export its resources soon there after no imports arrive and the price of medicine and necessities goes through the roof. In comes the WorldBank to the rescue with high interest rates thereby crippling the country with debt. You obviously do not understand pain and suffering through oppression or the baggage it leaves behind. Africa is like a host where the World is a massive mosquito.

I wish HP would simply put up a link to the list of all the countries in order plus some stats. I googled and did not come up with anything else.

I honestly expected to see Bangladesh on that list. It was the most depressing place I've ever been. The streets were full of beggars with curable or preventable diseases (polio and leprosy), the waterways were filthy, and the air was simply brown with pollution. I thought I’d seen poverty, but Bangladesh was truly eye-opening.

When I saw No. 3, my heart skipped a beat. Those stripes.....that star! Then I realized it was only ONE star, for Liberia. I'm sad that Liberia is in this position....but perhaps even more frightened that the US just might fit into that No. 3 position in a few years! (Yikes! -- How the mighty could fall! ) How to stop it? Buy American-made products.....and (rich people), PLEASE
stop voting yourself pay raises in congress, and/or larger salaries in private industry! Americans
have to BELIEVE IN EACH OTHER AGAIN!

Are you some kind of cretin? You thought that the US was one of the 10 poorest countries in the world? Clearly , our dilapidated education system has failed you.

A meager silver lining for these countries, the poorer America gets, the weaker their stranglehold on these countries will be. Poetic justice?
01:50 PM on 08/04/2010
riiiiight...America keeps these countries impoverished....with the billions of dollars we give in aid they are the only ones screwing themselves. They don't want development, it requires work.
10:38 PM on 08/04/2010
I think you fundamentally misunderstand aide given to these countries. It is typically through either the IMF or the World Bank (though some is given directly or through other agencies) and comes with contingencies that allow multi-national corporations to rape their resources under free trade laws. I suggest you pick up a copy of any one of these countries' IMF Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (or as they used to be called Structural Adjustment Policies).

I'd love to know what country you're from. America doesn't keep these countries poor, it did not make them poor either.
