Obama Birthday: President Hands Out Citizens Medals, Takes To White House Lawn (PHOTOS)

With Michelle and Sasha in Spain and Malia at summer camp, President Obama was home alone on his birthday...but he didn't celebrate alone! Among the items on his busy schedule: in the morning, he presented 13 people with the 2010 Citizens Medal, the nation's second-highest civilian honor, and in the afternoon he was out on the White House lawn pointing at well-wishers with Rahm Emanuel and Valerie Jarrett before he headed off to Chicago. Thanks from me as well! And a small question from a foreigner that has barely set foot in the States: how is it you guys combine being basically the inventors and global promoters of hard-core individualism, and at the same time have your 'most powerful man in the world' spend significant amounts of time and energy on rewarding acts of solidarity and collectivism? And by this I absolutely don't mean to diminish these 13 people or their actions (or POTUS), it just looks quite intriguing on this side of the Atlantic.

Btw, happy birthday Mr. Obama, you can't imagine what a difference you make to the image of America abroad, even with all the destructive policies that still seem firmly in place.

Many were quick to blame you for the leak, as if you had set the explosion yourself, then were quick to blame you for the time it took BP to cap it, as if you should have outfitted yourself in diving suit to cap it yourself, instead of relying on the oil experts. Your calm under fire and steady leadership got the job done, with BP paying most of the bill. Thank you, Mr. President.
