Party In The UGA: Georgia Welcomes Freshmen With Cringe-Worthy Video (WATCH)

First Posted: 08/05/10 02:33 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:15 PM ET

Ah, the sounds that another school year's upon us: pencils being sharpened, backpacks zipping and off-key singing in an ill-advised university orientation video.

The University of Georgia -- recently named the country's No. 1 party school -- is this year's offender, crooning about the school's "amazin'" dining services (and more) to Miley Cyrus's "Party in the U.S.A." Indeed, the video gives new meaning to the term "party school."

Keep your eyes out for a cameo appearance by Georgia head football coach Mark Richt.

I'm moving to Athens as a freshman in the Honors program tomorrow, and these were our orientation leaders. This movie isn't a documentary it's a spoof about things at UGA - it's SUPPOSED to be terrible (see: movies like Epic Movie, Vampires Suck). I don't understand how you can judge people as being lazy and saying things like "I bet not a legitimate academic major among them" based on a 4 minute video that is intended to be funny. They were all really good guides as orientation leaders and have dedicated their ENTIRE SUMMERS to introducing my class to UGA. Seriously. Orientation took place over 2 days, and there were 15 groups, two groups a week. So before you start running your mouth about how they obviously are idiots, just realize that these are still college kids having *fun*.

And yes, I know that Georgia being the "number one party school" doesn't help our image or public perception, but keep in mind that it doesn't encompass everyone at the school and that those statistics are almost entirely bull - based off of online student surveys that may or may not have been filled out accurately, and filled out by an average of 300 students per university. Yeah, 300 out of the 26,000 undergraduates.

But I mean, damn, you people seem almost as ignorant as Republicans.

I bet not a legitimate academic major among them. Gee, I wonder why our "college" graduates can't find work.

I guess you have plenty of time to make high school videos as a college upper classman when you major in bulls**t.

As a Gator fan, I truly appreciate that joke (and yes I know the punchline).

Now I know why Tennessee keeps beating Georgia in the fall.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous the amount of negative attention that this is receiving. First of all, these students (who are bright leaders that serve all facets of campus through their leadership roles in various student organizations) are chosen to help welcome the 5,000 newly incoming freshmen to UGA, and this video is an attempt to make students laugh and help them transition into UGA. I have visited a lot of other college campuses who do the exact same thing. Their purpose is to communicate important information about the university and relate to these freshmen, not to be the "best singers" or "best video editors." It takes months of hard work to put the orientation program (the entire 2 days) together, and these students work tirelessly during their term (upwards of 60 hours a week) to fulfill their jobs of serving as orientation leaders while performing other tasks such as helping students with registration, giving campus tours, and answering questions that students want to ask upperclassmen. These students, some of them whom I know personally, have dedicated their entire summer to do this, and I think that they should be commended for this rather than ridiculed for a 4 minute video that was an attempt to be light-hearted and fun.

I know 2 of them, and I would definitely say that they are ignorant for making a video like this. For real. Hire a production team, least it will be worth the watch.

It's an Orientation video... they weren't trying to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival... Jesus, give them a break.

Who said they were? Still sucks.

Is there no theater department at UGA? Every high school production I ever saw was better than that?
03:43 PM on 08/06/2010
Wow. I went to this school and don't recall anything this lame....ever. Maybe the close proximity of the J & J Chemical Company really is causing some students to have 'side effects'. Oh wait, the chemical company exploded last week. Nevermind...there is no excuse for this.

I can't believe the amount of negative comments here. These kids weren't trying to win an award or make a video with the best sound quality ever - they were trying to give incoming freshman a glimpse of insight to some of the experiences they would soon have, as well as entertain them, make them laugh, and bring back a lot of great memories for graduates of UGA. I graduated from UGA in 2006 and loved watching this video because it brought back so many laughs and memories. Keep in mind that these Orientation Leaders kept full time jobs and still found time to put this video together, which is no small task. I thought it was very clever and enjoyed watching it.

Agreed! I work in Orientation on a college campus and it's not an easy task putting these videos together. EVERYONE has an opinion on the execution and content, which is exhausting to manage.

Ultimately though, it's the students' vision they have to execute, and these videos/skits are normally made with a lot of love. Granted, maybe they could have had some other students do vocals at UGA (not everyone is blessed with a great voice...), but at the end of the day, these students just wanted to show something a little fun at 7:00am on the first day of Orientation.

At other SEC schools, they like to do live songs and dances...-sideeye-

Ultimately it's the university's decision to air a video like this. Letting students have control of the university's public image is insane, which is the real mystery here. These kids are having fun being 'video stars', which is all well and good; but stilted hip hop moves along with (worst yet) rhythmic rhymes that are marginally rhyming or rhythmic taken together with some heavy-handed editing make this a "cringe-worthy" production indeed.

My high school students can edit video better than this. Glad I live in the Northeast.

The sound quality is horrible. Don't they a school radio station with decent microphones. Or some sort of media department. I went to UC Davis and we would have used KDVS to do something like this.

And I'm not a fan of autotuning but it would have helped out these people.

The editing, however, is pretty darn good... all things considered.

I visited UGA this summer, and as absolutely atrocious as this video is, I'm happy to see it.

I got a douchey preppy vibe from the place...good to see that they can make fools of themselves.
