McClatchy:

About $70 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the stimulus bill, is to bolster a federal program aimed at helping homeless children. The money will assist cash-strapped school districts in complying with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, a federal mandate to help remove some of the obstacles that prevent homeless students from attending school.

When showing a singular picture, HP continues to display the faces of the unemployed and the faces of the homeless as black, when in fact most of the unemployed and homeless by sheer numbers in this country are necessarily white.

What is up with that, HP? What are you trying to say / suggest? What feelings do you conjure up?

Will you let this question post? Will you reconsider how you treat these issues?

I was thinking the same thing myself. I am fortunate to live a comfortable lifestyle, I don't mind paying taxes, when the money is well used. If our tax dollars go to help those less fortunate, I am all for it.

What a waste it does not help them at all

I bet they would rather have food and housing before even worrying about going to school.

A thoughtful coordinator such as was described appeared to contact each family/child in order to determine their specific needs while making suggestions as to what Could be needed. That coordinator has access to individuals, businesses and organizations (plus the government itself) as sources to provide the needed supplies. My experiences as a student, teacher, parent and grandparent also show that many individuals with available resources also contact the coordinator to provide assistance which can remain anonymous.

Republican answer to this: Cut the funding. These kids should have the choice to go to school or not or to live in a house or on the street. Republicans are for kid's worker rights.....that is the right to hire them and pay them slave wages.

What a waste of money. It would have been so much better to give it to the rich because they make jobs. Wait, unemployment is at near depression levels because after all the tax breaks to the rich from which they were supposed to be creating jobs it didn't happen. So in the famous words of Emily Litella, never mind.

WHY DOES EVERYONE COMMENT ON TROLLS?

We know both parties troll. So do special interest groups. Commenting on trolls serves no purpose except to feed a sense of self importance. I choose to not reply to offense answer, stereotyping, abuse, or party ideology which the replier doesn't back up with credible linked statistical data.

On the other hand, saying this new comment format isn't as good as the original one because I have problems reading all the comments in order (can't seem access beyond the first 5 pages) - well, that's something that may affect this thread and we may have in common.

To each his own. It's fun for me to smack them down; kind of like shooting fish in a barrel.

Well, Drumz, I'll give you credit for admitting it's an ego trip.

I'm just not into that. I really dislike the occasional reply that assumes that if I don't agree with his/her opinion I'm a member of a particular 'group.' That forces me into responding to a foolish assumption, which wastes my time and usually isn't pretty.

I hope troll-bashers will be more careful about such silly assumptions. My comments are open - it's fairly easy to see that I'm not a member of any 'group,' and why that's true.

Amazing how even the "friendly" part of the media always seems to present these underclasses using black people's pictures. Even here on HuffPo, check out pictures of folks about to be deprived of unemployment benefits, and waiting in line, and you're more likely than not to see black people. Even in 2010, Hollywood has still not gotten over its obsession with black criminals...

This stereotype unfortunately plays right into the hands of those who are totally convinced that Obama is doing special favors to Blacks, thus converting even potentially feel-good stories into lightning rods for the Right.

A little editorial honesty, folks...

Love the tro((s. Helping poor children eat and get an education is "porkulus"

Also did a little driving this weekend. Saw a whole lot of bridge and highway work being done. Remember kiddies, roads and bridges are communist.

OMG, don't tell the Republicans this will be their new ad asking all "good" Americans to vote against this evil. Because Lord only knows we shouldn't be helping the homeless let alone children.

The air waves should be saturated with this kind of news. America has become a sad place when no one cares about homeless children. But the Republicans want the upper 2% to have major tax cuts which would really put a dent in the homless CHILDREN problem. I wish there were more Ann Curry stories - these stories should have their own channel! We need to have our priorities right Americans.

In my section of suburban Chicago our churches and our township offices have extensive food pantries, and many also have "closets." Kids grow fast and many schools also have such a collection so no kid goes w/o a winter coat or shoes that fit. They may or may not accept donations, but often refer them to the township office for selection. The school districts where I taught, regardless of the state, all had closets and anonymity (sp?).
