House Ethics Committee Releases Three Counts Of Alleged Ethics Violations Against Maxine Waters

WASHINGTON — The House ethics committee on Monday announced three counts of alleged ethics violations against California Democrat Maxine Waters, including a charge that she requested federal help for a bank where her husband owned stock and had served on its board.

Waters, a 10-term representative from Los Angeles, has denied any wrongdoing and had urged the committee to come forth with details of the charges so that she can defend herself in a trial expected to take place this fall.

That trial would be the second handled by the ethics committee this fall. Another senior Democrat, former Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel, faces 13 counts, including failing to disclose assets and income and delayed payment of federal taxes. With the election just three months away, Republicans have pounced on the two cases as indications of Democrats failing to live up to promises to end corruption in Washington.

The Waters case revolves around whether she helped OneUnited Bank obtain federal bailout funds in late 2008. Her husband, Sidney Williams, served as a member of OneUnited's board of directors from January 2004 until April 2008, and was a stockholder in the bank.

The report says Waters asked the Treasury Department to meet representatives from the National Bankers Association, a trade group representing minority-owned and women-owned banks. The discussion at that September 2008 meeting centered on OneUnited Bank.

Waters, who chairs the Financial Services subcommittee on housing and community opportunity, contends that the National Bankers Association requested the meeting, which was held on behalf of the association, not OneUnited. OneUnited eventually received $12 million in bailout money.

She petitioned to have the charges dismissed, but the ethics committee rejected that request.

The first count said she violated House rules that members "shall behave at all times in a manner that shall reflect credibility on the House."

It said that her husband's financial interest in OneUnited had declined from $350,000 at the end of June 2008, to about $175,000 in September, and would have been worthless if OneUnited had not received federal funds.

The second violation pertains to the use of improper influence that results in a personal benefit. It cites the failure of Waters to instruct her chief of staff to refrain from assisting OneUnited after she realized she should not be involved in the case.

The third count relates to the dispensing of special favors or privileges to anyone, whether for remuneration or not.

Waters said in an earlier statement that "the record will clearly show that in advocating on behalf of minority banks, neither my office nor I benefited in any way, engaged in improper action or influenced anyone."

From Nixon’s shame-faced, furtive political burglary to Bush’s eager, lip-smacking use of kidnapping and torture, the right wingers’ response when they’re caught red-handed in acts of evil is always, “Oh, both sides do it, so it doesn’t matter.”
That’s quite a strange position for self-advertised moral absolutists to take, made doubly strange by the fact that both sides obviously DO  Read More...

All politicians should be held accountable for their actions. My question is, what’s being done about Sen. John Ensign? Why is this guy getting a pass?

Since this is still the USA, I'll defer passing judgment on Waters until she's had a chance to defend herself. The case against her, however, seems weak.

IF she used her influence to get taxpayer funds to save this bank and her husband's $175,000.00 then she should resign. If not, let's move past this and get back to saving our country. She deserves her day in court.

We all need to regroup and stick up for Maxine. She stuck her neck out for us when she stood up to the CIA when they got exposed by Gary Webb in the San Jose Mercury News for their cocaine dealing in our inner cities to fund their illegal, covert, unapproved wars and their systematic program of feeding crack to minorities to keep them down. She even wrote the preface to his book : Dark Alliance and the CIA has been after her ever since while both the Bushes and the Clintons were complicit in this drug trade that everyone knew about but was afraid to talk about. Gary Webb died of two gunshots to the head a few years back and of course it was ruled a suicide by our corrupted civil servants.

Good grief, the Republican dirty tricks department is really into overtime.. must be an election year! This is just more ridiculous manipulation by the party of no..... the leading Republican on the ethics committee calling ethics violations on a democrat so they can have thier investigation in public just before the election. With three whole ethics violations, Oh, the horror! Yeah, it is the best they can come up with.... doesn't hurt that she is black, too, you can get your base ginned up over two groups in one shot!! Yeehaw! Of course it wont amount to anything in the end, it will be a lot of republicans issuing statements about the 'moral fiber' of democrats ... and a lot of talk on Republican propaganda radio and television about how we HAVE to root out corruption and clean up government (amazing how it doesn't bother them nearly so much when THEY are in charge) and it will be Obama's fault. Then when the charges are dropped for being the nonsense they are, it will happen quietly after the election is over. The problem is that they have overplayed their hand... the only people buying this tactic anymore are teabaggers and Faux news fans, they need a new shtick, this one is really old.

When people really try and talk to each other instead of choose sides in partisan politics good things can happen. I have two brothers who are hard core on different sides. I sat down and made a three page proposal on a plan for healthcare reform. I went to each of them and had them read it and asked them if they would accept it if it became a system, they both said yes. It covered those who could not afford healthacre and didn't cost the taxpayers a dime. Am I saying I am super intellegent? No. I am saying that we all know the current system is broken and that although the arrogant politicians will never fix it the American people could if not for the special interests that control our great leaders who are bought and paid for by the lobbyists who only care about their profits. I know this is off subject but agian then it is not. the subject is corruption, and we could end it if we were given the chance.

She wants to talk about double standard??

“"Believe me, the American public does not appreciate double standards. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. No one should be so big, so important, so powerful, that they can violate the rules of this house and the laws of this country without suffering the consequences".

Republicans and Democrats seem you have problems when it comes to power. There's no defending either side. Wrong doing is not party dependent.

Absolutely correct. Fanned and faved.
Republicans are definitely the party of NO, at least right now, but are the Democrats any better with their threatening boss and their massive spending practices?

We REALLY need to clean up and remove the partisan system before it tears this country apart. Sadly, politicians aren't about what's right for US, they're about that $200k+/year job in DC
