Arizona Sen. John McCain's campaign is rolling out a new attack ad seeking to link Republican primary opponent former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth to disgraced Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who was recently released from prison.
"Congressman J.D. Hayworth did favors for the infamous Jack Abramoff and his friends," intones a narrator in the 30-second spot. "He received $150,000 from Abramoff and his clients. .. Most politicians gave back all the tainted money. But not J.D. He kept the money."
(Abramoff served three-and-a-half years in a minimum-security prison for fraud, corruption and conspiracy. He now reportedly works at a kosher pizza shop in Baltimore, Md.)
The assault from McCain comes on the heels of a flurry of negative ads released by the incumbent Senator, as well as by Hayworth, ahead of the Arizona's August 24 primary election.
