for the toddler set, pop up books keep their interest(if necessary) and help with hand-eye coordination.

there are some really neat pop ups for older kids, 5-8 year olds, that are fascinating and that my daughter loves. those are great. Robert Crowther writes some fabulous ones- we just bought this one on flight:

Could it be because pop up books are the reader's digest version of children's lit? Condensed. Fewer words.

They're meant to be visually stimulating and fun. Not a science textbook.

Nope but they're hella fun! If Moby Dick was a pop up, I might have finished it...

Actually, there is a Moby Dick pop-up out now - I have it! It is more of an art piece than literature, but it is beautifully done. I agree we miaiuppa above...pop-ups aren't meant to be literature/sciene textbooks. They are objects unto themselves.
