Solar power has a
long way to go:
fewer than one percent of American homes use any form of solar. And the fragmented inefficient solar industry certainly isn't helping, says Dave Llorens, founder and CEO of
1 Block Off The Grid.
“[The industry] is archaic”, Llorens said. “It’s riddled with trust issues, laborious, confusing and as a result, rare for people to feel confident making a good decision about solar power even though the economic benefit is mind-blowing.”
Lloren's insight was to build 1BOG's business around "solar communities." His firm works with solar installation companies to negotiate group discounts by neighborhood, taking a referral fee from the solar providers and capitalizing on the eco-minded's sense of activism.
By holding the hand of the cautious consumer and brokering deals with the thousands of solar installation companies in America, Llorens believes he can harness the power of the group. “If fabric is sold by the yard”, Llorens explained, “Solar power is sold by the Watt. Unlike electricity, the cost of solar will always be stable and discounted with the group. The way we think of it at 1BOG is that if you have to take this leap of faith, take it with the two million other people who live in your city.” --

"Dave founded One Block Off the Grid (1BOG) after having worked as a solar salesman and discovering in homeowners' living rooms the industry's hurdles to people actually going solar: it's complicated and expensive.
1BOG addresses these issues by grouping together homeowners and vetting installers in a campaign region, and negotiating a group discount."
