I was on a United flight out of Orlando to Denver that had an inflight emergency. The plane started to fill with smoke from an unknown source. The flight attendants blamed some kid who was in the bathroom, but it was apparent he could not be the cause. Finally the pilot told us to strap in and he divebombed from 30,000 feet to 10,000 feet and then ventilated the cabin. Most of the passengers were pretty quiet, but one of the flight attendants completely lost it and was bawling like a baby. I think we all had a few minutes to think about the reality that this was likely the end.

After the cabin ventilated there was no more smoke. The pilot quickly landed at some way backwards place in Mississippi - the people there live worse than any third world country I have visited. Fire trucks and rednecks all over the runway, but in the end we just pulled up and got off. We spent 8 hours on the ground waiting for another plane, and the crew never got off because they were so embarrassed over their performance. They ended up being the same crew to take us into Denver, and they were not the usual then.
