Lesbian Cadet Quits West Point, Cites 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

08/12/10 09:10 PM ET   AP

West Point Lesbian Cadet

WEST POINT, N.Y. — A lesbian cadet asked to resign from the U.S. Military Academy because she said she can no longer lie about her sexuality and was troubled by the anti-gay attitudes of some around her.

Katherine Miller of Findlay, Ohio, also said she wants to fight for repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" law, a subject she was studying and writing about as a sociology major at West Point.

"I intend for my resignation to offer a concrete example of the consequences of a failed law and social policy," she wrote in her resignation letter on Monday, referring to the law against gays serving openly in the military.

Miller wrote proudly of her accomplishments as a student, athlete and soldier and said that she had not been pressured by anyone to resign. But she wrote of being "coerced into ignoring derogatory comments towards homosexuals for fear of being alienated for my viewpoint" and that she "endured sexual harassment for fear of being accused as a lesbian."

Miller said by e-mail that she wasn't immediately available to speak with The Associated Press on Thursday, but she confirmed the resignation letter.

In the letter, she said she fabricated a heterosexual dating history to share with any fellow cadets who asked.

"In short, I have lied to my classmates and compromised my integrity and identity by adhering to existing military policy," she said.

Ranked ninth in the class of more than 1,100 cadets about to start their third year, Miller's resignation letter was dated a week before she would be required to sign a commitment to finish her final two years and serve five years in the military.

Jim Fox, a West Point spokesman, said Miller will remain at the academy while her request is reviewed. That takes about a week, he said.

Miller "is in good standing and has done very well academically, militarily and physically while at the academy," Fox said Thursday. Cadets may withdraw at any point in their first two years without owing the government service or compensation for the education and benefits they've received.

Miller has been admitted to Yale University, starting in September.

She said she will work through her studies and political activism to win repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" law and would apply to return to West Point in the 2011-2012 academic year if that happens soon enough.

I am repeating. Why are men so afraid of women. Is it because they admit they can't control their sexual urges and women can? Doesn't this make them actually "mentally challanged". They are brainwashed to kill the enemy but not to accept women as mentally equal to themselves. They can commit the utmost legal crime but fear vaginas. I don't get it.

I'm all for the repeal of DADT, but........knowing what the policy is, why did she ever apply to any of the service academy programs if being out is important to her?

Many of you seem to think that this cadet resigned to avoid honoring her commitment to serve her time and repay her education. On the contrary, she resigned to illustrate how utterly ridiculous and destructive this policy is! Ninth in her class of 1100, she excelled in academics and athletics. This woman is a superstar and she could have chosen any carreer path imaginable. I am sure she knew that before she chose to sacrifice five years of her life in service to her country. She resigned to show how ridiculous this policy is that compels the Military to discharge the best and the brightest rather than allow them to simply be who they are. She resigned to have the freedom to make a career fighting this injustice, and she resigned so that she would not have to silently endure the sexual harrassment and homophobic attitudes of her colleagues. Whether it was her plan all along to shine at West Point and then resign after two years to make a political statement, or whether she decided not to endure this oppressive policy any longer, I applaud her courage. She has effectively highlighted the need to repeal this archaic and destructive policy.

end DADT now. Until the legislation is passed, all military discharges due to sexual orientation should be put on hold while waiting for the legislation. Also, they should allow those who were discharged, to reenter the military if they choose.

I am a veteran and support the elimination of DADT. It was bad policy from the start. The problem I have with this woman is she took a West Point slot away from someone else. I find it highly unlikely someone that intelligent had an epiphani at the exact right time to be excluded from the military commitment. She got a decent two-year ride at the taypayer's expense.

Well played but definitely not officer material. I'm glad she's gone.

Yes. It was a waste of a space that another serious candidate could have had.

She's better off being a private citizen and persuing a different career path....

The discipline is rough there. It is not for everyone, disregarding the whole lesbian deal. She says it is that but it could be it all got to be just too much discipline and work and drudgery for her . A lot of heterosexuals walk out. But that might be as good an excuse as any.

"Ranked ninth in the class of more than 1,100 cadets..."

That's hugely impressive. And good for her. This a a person which both physical and mental resilience and the sense to use the two.

I hope she takes this support and uses it to become become a leader we can look to in the future for this important issue.

Rachel Maddow interviewed Cadet Katie Miller and an highly decorated combat veteran, Army Captain Jonathan Hopkins (with three bronze stars) the other night to illustrate the terrible cost imposed on the nation's Armed Services by this extraordinarily primitive and discredited policy. This "implementation review," being insisted on by the desperate for power John McCain and the other gay bashers such as Patreus in the Congress, should be ended immediately and Obama should simply ban discrimination based on sexual preference by Executive Order. (He still is the Commander in Chief, isn't he?) The closeted rotters who outed Hopkins and harassed Miller, along with the officers to whom they report, should be given general discharges with the clear understanding that gay men and women in the armed services doing their duty will be treated with the respect of straights performing admirably. If they are derelict in their duty, there will be more than ample opportunity to discipline them or discharge them.

This has got to stop. Are we are free society or what?! Why are we doing this to people who are willing to serve our country? It's INSANITY!!!! The fault lies with those who are the bigots, not with those who have a different sexual orientation. Bigots, GET OVER IT!

Here is the deal, bigots. Your way of thinking will be extinct one day. There is no way around it. It WILL happen. So quit making yourselves look stupid by ranting and raving over the evils of homosexuality and the like. Focus on something else like edumacating yourself in hopes of curing your ignorance.

Stupid can't be fixed
Ignorance CAN be fixed unless it is Willful.
Homosexuality is NOT a choice but homophobia most certainly is.

The DADT policy is on its death bed. It won't last no matter who is in the White House. But this girl is pretty stupid by giving up so quickly. She basically threw away a career she wanted simply because she couldnt wait another year or two.

Now that she has violated previous laws, she won't be let back into any of the academies. If you ask me, she could have just kept her mouth shut for one more year at USMA, became an officer, then wait for DADT to go away.

Stupid girl, if you ask me. Is Lebron's camp giving her advice too?

this girl was at the top of her class - that shows that she has the smarts, fortitude, dedication, motivation, desire, and mental and physical stamina and resilience to put up with a lot to achieve her dreams and goals. that you think she made this decision willy-nilly is more indicative of your character than hers.

Excuse me but DADT existed BEFORE she entered the academy and it is now about to end.

She is a smart women, no doubt about it, but she appears to be using her smarts to wiggle out of a commitment she made to taxpayers and the military. On its merits, her excuse makes little sense, but it fires up people like you, who apparently respond to emotion, whether than logic.

In that respect, she is carrying on like a Sarah Palin of the PC left.

I have served in the Miliatary and I have served at a US Service Academy as part of the base staff. I worked directly with the cadets for 4 years so I get it.....

The first thing that a Cadet is taught is the Honor Code:

A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do

This phrase is the Gospel at a service Academy and I have seen countless Cadets get kicked out for telling a lie...In most cases the the punishment for the Truth would have been far less severe. I have seen Cadets pull a lot of stunts to get kicked out and I find it very curious that she decided to come out just prior to have to take on a 5-year committment if she enters her 3rd year.....Convientent. Oh sure, her academics are fantastic and she is physically fit....But as a liar, she is not officer material and should not be in a service academy as she enter the service academy under fraudulent terms....

Ironically, DADT is the one exception to the Honor Code that actually allow one to lie and she couldn't even live up to that rule....Yep, she is definately Yale Material. Enjoy those free 2 years on the taxpayers back that you stole a slot for someone else.

Don't ask and Don't tell does not mean lie. It means don't say anything. But that doesn't serve the purpose of this article or her/your agenda.

Surely you know how real life works. Not saying anything when a response is called for, is effectively a response.

DADA is a Policy....Article 125 is the Law of the Military.
08:16 AM on 08/13/2010
It seems that the whole idea of DADT - or how it plays out in real life - is contrary to the Honor Code. The sooner the military gets rid of it, the better.

DADT was virtually requiring that she lie in order to stay in. Which is more honorable - staying in and continuing to lie, or telling the truth and opting out?

BTW - if it's true that such a successful student is a liar and not officer material, then the service academies are effectively banning gays from their ranks, effectively requiring them to break the rules.

The military will be better off when DADT is repealed.

DADT is a bad policy becasue it contradicts article 125 of the uniform code of militarty justice under the sodmy law. BTW, that doesn't just apply to gays but those heterosexual freaks that likes to get into mokey-love and what not....

If they repeal DEDT, then it will be open seaon on Gays again unless the UCMJ is changed and that takes an acto of congress and not a Presidential Executive order.

I cant believe how many people comment on something they know NOTHING about. So anyone who has not served in the military, mind your own business!

This is not news, who cares if some girl doesn't wanna join the military.

Actually, if you possessed even one working brain cell, you'd know that losing a highly capable soldier such as this "girl" makes America weaker.

Now run along back to the Spongebob website.

Have you served? Does this affect you?
Do have any idea what your talking about?
Our military will be fine without 1 girl who would rather have homosexual relations than serve her country. She didnt even earn the title soldier yet, she's just a college kid who changed her mind.
08:04 AM on 08/13/2010
She wasn't a "soldier" yet. You need to graduate to technically be considered a "soldier".

Just because she is book smart, doesn't mean she'll be "highly capable" to be a leader of men and women during wartime.

The Army is currently waaaaaaay ahead of its recruiting and retention goals. There are thousands of better qualified heterosexual men and women who are waiting to be accepted into one of the world's most historic universities.
