Obama Administration Touts Its Get-Tough Approach To Illegal Immigration

Immigration Protests

PHOENIX — The federal government has deported more illegal immigrants from the U.S. than ever before, the director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Thursday as part of an effort to push back on the suggestion Washington isn't doing enough.

"For those who doubt the federal government's resolve in the enforcement of immigration law, let me say this: We are committed to strong, effective immigration enforcement, and the facts speak for themselves," ICE Director John Morton said.

He said his agency removed a record 380,000 illegal immigrants from the U.S. last fiscal year, and about a third of them were convicted criminals. So far this fiscal year, ICE removed 136,000 illegal immigrants who are convicted criminals, also a record, Morton said.

"Is there more work to be done? Absolutely. Is the problem a significant one, a challenging one for the nation? Absolutely," he said. But "we're in this for the long haul. ... We're going to get this right."

Border staffing also is at an all-time high, and will only increase under a $600 million plan by President Barack Obama to put more agents and equipment along the Mexican border, Morton said.

The measure, which Obama planned to sign into law Friday, would fund the hiring of 1,000 new Border Patrol agents to be deployed at critical areas along the border, 250 more Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, and 250 more Customs and Border Protection officers.

From politicians to average residents, many in Arizona and elsewhere say the federal government isn't doing its job despite the increased efforts and deportations.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer cited government inaction as a reason for signing the state's new immigration law, which reignited that national illegal immigration debate, caused the governor's popularity to soar in the state and turned her into a national figure.

The law went into effect July 29 after a judge ruled to block its most controversial sections, including a part that required officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws. Brewer is appealing the decision and says she'll take it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Morton spoke specifically about ICE's efforts in Arizona, and said that during an average week, his agency removes 1,500 illegal immigrants from the state, arrests five human smugglers, investigates three drop houses, inspects the employment records of 526 people working for state companies and seizes a ton of marijuana.

As for Arizona's new law, Morton said ICE already works with state and local agencies to fight illegal immigration, and that "we don't think that 50 different immigration enforcement regimes is the answer."

The answer is uniform federal immigration reform, he said.

"You've got to have comprehensive reform that recognizes a need for strong border security, a need for strong interior enforcement, but also a means for families and workers to come here lawfully ... and an ability for people who've been here for a very long time to get right with the law by paying a fine and learning English and paying their taxes, and getting to the back of the line," Morton said.

As part of his visit, Morton also announced the results of a three-day statewide operation he said was the largest of its kind in Arizona. The operation, which ended Wednesday evening, netted the arrests of 63 illegal immigrants who are convicted criminals and immigrants with outstanding orders of deportation who failed to leave the country.

At least 25 already had been removed from the United States before. A conviction of felony re-entry into the U.S. carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

In 1993, Harry Reid introduced a strong anti-illegal immigration bill that would have also reduced legal immigration (also see). Then, in 2006, he offered an "unusual, rambling confession" apologizing for the bill. Just recently, he's criticized Sharron Angle for wanting to prevent illegal alien parents from taking advantage of birthright citizenship. As it turns out, his 1993 bill included the following  Read More...

If American business owners would quit hiring illegal labor then the draw
to come here would be reduced.

American business has always looked the other way because they wanted cheap labor.

They need to be fined if they hire anyone in this country illegally.

So now we get some numbers. 1/3 are convicted criminals. A few more than the pro-illegal groups just a few they always say. 136,000 this year is a lot of criminals. Most gang members are illegals. These are staggering and scary numbers, because, what do they have to lose by coming here again and again to commit crimes.

Colorado, Utah and Tennesee are all planning laws based on Arizona's. This issue is NOT going to go away despite the Fed's bragging about how many illegals they have deported. For every one law breaker they send back to Mehico, 10 more slip over the border probably. This is not working.
The Feds have pretty much looked the other way for the last 10 years viewing illegals as some "benign" element that has invaded America. However, towns and cities have been swamped fiscally by these people with their anchor babies, bilingual education "requirements" and much, much more. These people are a drain on America...their costs to be here far outweigh any economic pluses. I am all for people coming to America who want to do the right thing, do the long, involved work of becoming a legal US citizen. Obummer and the Dems have to have something to point to come election time showing that they are doing something about illegals...I JUST AM NOT BUYING IT. LOL.

I am a liberal and I try to judge everyone by their character, but illegal immigration is a threat to our security.

I kept track of serious illegal activity by illegal immigrants in the Houston area, as reported in the media. In one month's time, we had six deaths due to DUI's by those here illegally, several robberies, four detained after chases after being caught committing serious crimes, and six murders. The last arrest was reported yesterday, in the death of a beautiful 14-year old African American girl who was murdered by two Hispanic immigrants from El Salvador and Honduras. They had accosted her, tried to rape her just feet from her apartment complex and shot her when she fought back. They then robbed her. The one from El Salvador had been CONVICTED OF DUI'S TWICE AND DEPORTED TWICE AND WAS RIGHT BACK HERE.

We need a way to secure our borders, and then every person here illegally should have to present themselves for investigation within any program for a path to citizenship. If they have committed DUI's, batteries, thefts, or other crimes, been in gangs, or their children have been involved in it, then they should have to return to their homelands and never receive citizenship.

It will not help to deport them if we do not have a means to prevent them from returning. I know undocumented are not the only criminals, but that would prevent the ones they do commit.

where were republicans and the tea-party when bush was president?

why wasn't anything done about immigration during the bush presidency?

Obama has been in office for only 1 and a half years.

And with everything going on, including the failed wars in Iraq and Afghanistan...

....wars the republicans started....

AND COULDN'T FINISH!

now republicans and tea-baggers are whining that Obama isn't doing enough regarding border security?

it's all republican partisan rhetoric....

....with just a dash of closet racism.

Enforcing the law for 3% of the law breakers is getting tough?

If 3% of bank robbers were arrested would that be "getting tough"?

If 3% of murderers were sent to prison would that likewise be "getting tough"?

A 3% enforcement rate is not getting tough. At that rate it will take 30 years to catch the law breakers here now and do nothing for the new ones who arrive every deay.

Immigration to me has always been a wedge issue.

Drive a wedge into an issue to see where it splits.

But it's backfiring because not every legal immigrant and citizens is passionate about sending illegals back to Mexico, or any other country they may have originated from.

This isn't an issue that will drive November.

And the reality is that when the republicans were in power they did nothing to enforce immigration laws or reform immigration problems on a federal level.

If Obama does, the republicans will no longer have their wedgie.
04:31 AM on 08/15/2010
Part 1

Immigration enforcement has been federally ignored for decades. Bush tried to initiate immigration reform, but too many politicians of both parties were in disagreement as to the best way to do it, so no legislation ever came forth for a vote. At least Bush acknowledged that it was an issue that needed to be addressed, and consequently more Americans are concerned and have developed stronger opinions of how best to move forward.

I think you're wrong, though, that immigration won't be an issue in November. In border states especially, it will be a big issue. Right or wrong, most Americans are in favor of Arizona's SB1070, and want stronger enforcement of immigration. Contrary to what you infer, many legal immigrants do want illegal immigrants sent back to thetir home country. It's not fair to allow some immigrants to stay illegally while many legal immigrants had to spend a lot of money and wait a long time in order to follow the precepts of the law.
04:32 AM on 08/15/2010
Part 2

Obama & the Democrats have tried to create a "wedge" issue by framing the Republicans as "racists" for focusing the immigration debate on the border of Mexico, as if they hate Mexicans, rather than the fact that the Mexico border is the location of immense illegal border crossings. Obama & the Dems think they can gain a huge voting bloc by convincing Mexicans that Republicans hate them. Talk about "fear-mongering", most Mexicans see right through that farce.

Many Mexicans share the same family-oriented values that Republicans do. In fact, many of them were granted amnesty by Senor Reagan of the Republican party. Many Mexicans are upset at Obama for not initiating Immigration Reform in the first year of his term, as he had previously promised them he would. Many other Mexicans are upset that he's trying harder to enforce the border.

Immigration policy will definitely be a big issue at the polls in November...
...and it's not looking too good for Dr. O and the Dems.
09:43 AM on 08/15/2010
well said
10:39 AM on 08/15/2010
when bush proposed amnesty the republicans balked.

when bush proposed reformed the republicans balked.

the Democrats were ready to work with bush but the republicans were too busy deregulating the oil industry and Wall Street.

Now Obama is dealing with everything under the sun including the republicans apology for bp and the republicans failed wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The tea-party and the republicans are going to vote republican regardless of what Obama does with immigration.

Mexicans who are upset that Obama is trying harder to enforce the border aren't voting republican in November.

Texas, Arizona and most southern states are red-states anyway, if southern red-states don't vote republican than the republicans are in deeper trouble than first expected.

btw, you really went out of your way to try and convince me or someone that immigration is an important issue to you.

nice try.

Bluesky--your comments are ignorant. Viper makes some seemingly valid claims...What EVERY SENSIBLE person wants (including most Latinos) is "path to citizenship" for those who may be here illegally, but do no harm and in fact help the economy...The same "pathway" plan that (D) Luis Gutierrez advocates..that then Pres. "W" and McCain supported....for the same types of "illegals" that even Milton Friedman said were good for the US....
It's not rocket science, but quite simple...
Hate to say Palin may have been correct to say Pres. Obama didn't have "cojones" to get the job done on immigration...Not just Obama though.....most all politicians save aforementioned names...

The point of this action is what?

Obama's supporters do not want him to be tough on illegals, and his detractors understand that this is a sham, weak, a hoax and a misdirection.

The political leaders of Sonora, MX came to AZ last week to complain because, with the employer crackdowns, more Mexicans are going home. So many, they assert, that Mexico cannot handle them.

So what do we want, then? I DO see Obama supporters on this site railing that we need to crack down on employers, right? THAT would force a lot of illegals home. The paramilitary measures Obama touts are simply not enough, and far short of what is needed.

You got that right, read the following,,,A group of influential conservative members of the behemoth social media site Digg.com have just been caught red-handed in a widespread campaign of censorship, having multiple accounts, upvote padding, and deliberately trying to ban progressives. An undercover investigation has exposed this effort, which has been in action for more than one year.

Yes, reports of the Digg censorship scam are all over the net. The cons actually whined about being treated unfairly, when DIGG changed things to stop their manipulation of the system over there. Yet here they are screaming about censorship. What a hoot.

Then there are the ones sent over from HuffWatch, com - a site set up just to monitor and EF with HP. They actually quote our comments and get each other off saying nasty things about us. LMAO when I checked it out.
