The Top 10 Countries On Facebook: Pingdom

Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/13/10 02:54 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:20 PM ET

Facebook passed the 500 million user mark earlier this summer. But where are those users?

Facebook tells us that 70% of its users are outside the US, but beyond that, we know little about from what nations they hail.

In an effort to better understand the demographics of Facebook, Pingdom analyzed "per-country traffic estimates to Facebook.com" to rank the top 20 countries on Facebook.

We've highlighted the top 10 countries in the slideshow below and we think you'll see some surprises. Which nations are you surprised to see in the list? Weigh in below. Check out more surprising Facebook facts here, then see our favorite social media infographics.

The list should've been based on per capita.

Well just read every letter,my conclusion? Some of you guys are pretty smart and some of you are like me........kinda in the dark and stumbling but still well intentioned. My main attraction to Facebook is the friends i have found who turned into a senator in Calif.,the classmate from 40 years ago who is sailing his sailboat in the Carribean,a fellow ex-stoner who lives on a run down farm in Michgigan, the kinda of straight short hair friend who is now a D.J. at a very popular soft rock radio station in Connecticut,a party girl in Alabama, another head who has traveled to RUSSIA and many other places and still remembers me like yesterday! When i stumbled on this aspect of Facebook i was hooked! You are right it is too easy to just roll up 500 "friends" and some people work at this like it was the end of the world. The one thing i stopped doing daily on F.B. was trying to friend celebrities, too many fakes!!(sharon stone?)Presumably she speaks french and she won't answer any of the french inquires? Not important really, there a few positive aspects of F.B. which help maintain a social network with people you interact with daily and know and trust.I think i saw a remark that everybody is different......how true. All you guys out there have a good day,the diversity is truly amazing! Vermont out.

Tried this on my own site - but it is not very accurate. Computer ownership in Laos, for example is miminal, so 1 Laotian is a small overall sample but on a national level you may be reaching 50% of all laptop owners.

HMMM? Not a very hot topic yet? A little surprised to see that many U.S. users? I would have thought Great Britain would have been higher, what with the way they have wired London with cameras every 2 inches and the interest in that sort of technology?I can only guess we are a country of Gossip hungry technophobes? It would be interesting to see a documentary come on the Discovery channel and break the whole situation down in detail and explain what factors have come together to make us so high on the list? It really is thought provoking.Wide awake in Vermont.

Facebook is more of a site for those that love to eat time. Such a big time wasting website. These days people love doing social things that require them to just sit in front of a computer all day. Not as social as getting out and getting some fresh air.

Facebook is like a virus, it spreads until it wips out its host entirely. Sean Thibodeau at SusPack has a great article about Facebook and its control over us. Facebook – Veni, Vidi, Vici!

I would be more interested in seeing a stat over what percentages of those connected to the internet is on facebook per country...

It's amazing on how fast people ditched Myspace, I'm sure the same thing will happen to Facebook when another social network comes along. Sell the company while its hot!

"The United States has 4.6 times as many Facebook users as the second-largest country on Facebook, the United Kingdom."

This is stupid. The USA has over 300 million people while the UK only has over 60 million. I would think that the UK has more user per capita than the USA.

The per capita rate would be interesting - these numbers are useless.

What about total population of said country using face book?
12:44 PM on 08/16/2010
That would be interesting - something like the percentage of the population on Facebook. http://www.insidefacebook.com/2009/09/25/facebook-used-by-the-most-people-within-iceland-norway-canada-other-cold-places/ - shows Iceland at 49.5% of the *entire* population. More recent report - http://icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_life/?cat_id=59351&ew_0_a_id=365548 - reports it is now just over 60%.

Maybe it's because I never really cared enough to think about it, but I don't find any of these very surprising.

Yes, for a surprise I'd like to see Bhuttan (you'd think if Facebook made you happy, the happiest country in the world would be all over it), Andorra (one of the ones with oldest populations, everyone knows everyone else's face already), Burma (where anonymity is at a premium), Vatican City (Generally they're more into MySpace).

Those would be surprises
