Tea Party Activists Rally Along Arizona-Mexico Border To Protest Illegal Immigration

Tea Party Arizona Immigration Protest

HEREFORD, Ariz. — Tea party groups converged on a remote section of the U.S.-Mexico border on Sunday to show support for Arizona's controversial immigration law and hear from more than a dozen conservative speakers, many of them candidates running for office in crowded Republican primaries.

Several speaking to the crowd of more than 400 demanded Congress and President Barack Obama devote more resources to increase border security in remote areas like the site of Sunday's demonstration southeast of Tucson.

"We are going to force them to do it, because if they don't, we will not stop screaming," said former state Sen. Pam Gorman, one of 10 Republicans vying for an open congressional seat in north Phoenix. Gorman carried a handgun in a holster slung over her shoulder as she mingled with demonstrators.

Obama on Friday signed a bill directing $600 million more to securing the U.S.-Mexico border – money that will pay for hiring 1,000 more Border Patrol agents along with customs agents, communications equipment and expanded use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

A federal judge last month delayed the most contentious provisions of Arizona's law, including a section that would require officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws if they have "reasonable suspicion" that the person is in the country illegally.

On Sunday, demonstrators drove about four miles on a rutted and rocky dirt road to reach a remote private ranch 70 miles east of Nogales where the steel posts of the Arizona-Mexico border wall are set inches apart to prevent people from crossing into the U.S.

The rally was the most recent in a long line of sweaty demonstrations staged by activists on both sides of the debate over Arizona's controversial law.

Supporters have rallied in parks and baseball stadiums. Opponents have marched through downtown Phoenix, decrying a law they say would lead to racial profiling, conflict with federal immigration law and distract local police from fighting more serious crimes.

Several candidates and tea party groups passed out free water to visitors on the ranch Sunday where temperatures hovered around 100 degrees.

Hundreds of small U.S. flags and messages were attached earlier to the fence posts by opponents of illegal immigration. The fence, about 15-feet tall and built in the last decade, barely conceals the old barrier still standing behind it – a short, flimsy barbed-wire fence.

One message, attached to a flag on the border wall, read, "Mister President ... Secure This Border For America."

"It's time for us to stand up and say, 'We're not going to leave our country like this to our children and grandchildren," said Jim Howard, 61, who is retired from the Air Force and now works at Walmart.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, known for his tough enforcement of immigration laws in Arizona's most populous county, said more law enforcement officials should adopt his hard-line stance to prevent illegal immigrants from settling in after they've successfully crossed the border.

"Don't just say border enforcement, that's a cop-out," he said. "Let's say lock them up in the interior."

Arpaio said immigration enforcement goes far beyond the nation's border, and the Mexican government should welcome U.S. Border Patrol or military forces to go after drug cartels south of the border.

U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Hayworth, who is challenging Arizona Sen. John McCain in the Republican primary Aug. 24, also spoke at the event. He described the border security bill signed Friday as "too little, too late."

Betsy Bayley, 55, a stay-at-home grandmother in Hereford, said drug smuggling has left her feeling less safe in her home in recent years.

"My government should protect me so I can feel safe on my own property," said Bayley, with red, white and blue beads strung around her neck as she found a small patch of shade against the steel border fence. "That's my right as an American. I should feel safe on my own property."

Steven Nanatovich, 42, a retired Army Ranger from Sierra Vista, said immigration probably doesn't affect him as much as others because migrants pass through his area to live in communities farther north.

Nanatovich said he's rarely worried about his safety, but the death in March of rancher Rob Krentz, who was gunned down on his property some 40 miles east of the rally site, spooked him.

"I'm nervous leaving my 14-year-old at home," he said.

(This version CORRECTS the description of the rally site to say it is east of Nogales.)

It's great (?!?!) that the Tea Party has finally rallied around immigration reform after years of silence on the matter. Their timing couldn't be better (worse) what with Arizona's crime statistics at an all time low, deportations at an all time high and border patrol increases at historical levels.

Amazing how much there is to protest especially since Congress just passed an additional $60  Read More...

16 ILLEGALS SUE ARIZONA RANCHER! (SERIOUSLY)
An Arizona man who has waged a 10-year campaign to stop a flood of illegal immigrants from crossing his property is being sued by 16 Mexican nationals who accuse him of conspiring to violate their civil rights when he stopped them at gunpoint on his ranch on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Roger Barnett, 64, began rounding up illegal immigrants in 1998 and turning them over to the U.S. Border Patrol, he said, after they destroyed his property, killed his calves and broke into his home.

His Cross Rail Ranch near Douglas, Ariz., is known by federal and county law enforcement authorities as "the avenue of choice" for immigrants seeking to enter the United States illegally

When did the Democratic party stop being the face of labor? Why are we supporting 12 million illegals in our country that bust unions with cheap labor and surpress wages for everyone? Why is this being turned into a racial issue when it wouldnt matter one bit what color or country the illegals were coming from. The effect is the same. Corporations love the cheap labor they provide. Tysonpoultry and meat companies enjoy fat profits from illegal immigrant labor while our poorest citizens lose unskilled jobs to them. Illegals make unions an endangered species. Notice how few union jobs there are these days?

Co-sign First F&F. Thanks I agree 100%.. There is this belief that the only people who have a problem with the massive amounts of illegals who are currently in this country and the massive number who are continuing to sneak into this country every day because of our open borders are in their words "Racist Republicans"

They are so wrong, as you stated for most of us it has nothing to do with race and it should not have anything to do with whether you are a Democrat or Republican, it has to do with our economy and the fact that this particular group of people seem to get a pass from our government when it comes to obeying our laws. I am all for equality, I have to obey the laws of this country, why shouldn't they.

Thanks from a black female democrat!

Illegals are really just a small part of it. So many good jobs have gone overseas and we are becoming a nation of service industry jobs, instead.

Section 1;

OK.. let’s try to be proactive for just a moment..

Nobody is advocating “open borders”… so the ‘baggers and the bigots can stow the strawmen.

First and foremost, we must reinforce and secure our borders. That means increasing the manpower pledged to that task exponentially and using satellite technology to help them find the breaches. No borders can ever be 100% impenetrable, but this could mitigate most of the flow of those trying to get in illegally.

This will cost money.. and tax increases will be necessary to get it going (sorry).

Pressure Mexico to enforce their own borders, imposing strict tariffs on all products they import, including those by so called "American" companies that offshored American jobs.

We must also stop many of our own industries here in the States.. those who enable the corrupt government there to violently strike-bust and destroy their unions, which directly causes waves of their miners, construction workers, carpenters, electrical workers, and others unable to find other employment to cross the border into the U.S. as undocumented workers.
03:50 PM on 08/16/2010
The border ARE essentially open when you have 11 million (some say 20 million) illegals here already.

Mexicos entire giovernment is corrupt and only 1 in 100 crimes even gets prosecuted by their corrupt courts.

57% of Mexicos wealth is controlled by five families and Pemex pumps million of barrels of oil from the ground. Unlike Venenzuela the people dont benefit from it. It is not a poor country. It is a poorly managed country. Look up Pemex before you babble about things you are clueless of.
While you are at it... look up the "La Raza rreconquista" and "AZTLAN"

Isnt that what these people you called teabaggers are looking for ? Safe borders and who comes in does it according to the rules ? No more amnesty , we dont need their labor at a time when there are not enough jobs to go around ,and it just rewards those who broke the law and encourages those to do it in the future .Just like Reagans big mistake did.. And the great lie is that these are jobs Americans will not take.

Oh yeah, how many Americans do you know who would work outdoors under the ferocious Arizona sun at temperatures exceeding 110 degrees or work for below minimum wage with no benefits? And which party is completely opposed to the minimum wage and it fine with jobs being outsourced overseas because it believes in free, unregulated capitalism?

Section 2;

We especially need to focus on the employers and sweatshop owners who work these poor souls as virtual slaves and make sure that they are put in REAL prisons to do GENUINE hard time. No “Club Fed”.

Legalize, regulate and tax marijuana & cocaine and weaken the cartels.

Undocumented workers who have committed serious crimes in the United States, other than just their mere presence here, should immediately be deported and handed over to the Mexican Authorities.

The others, the vast majority of whom are simple, hard working people just trying to make better lives for their families and their children (many of whom are already US citizens) should be allowed to stay under certain, strict conditions. They should be fined, perhaps through withholdings from their paychecks, taxed, and required to perform community service for a certain number of years until such time that they can begin the long, hard road to citizenship, waiting, of course, until all of the others who obeyed the rules get their chances first.

Throwing 12.5 million men, women and children out just isn't a practicable remedy, so let's make the best of the situation and gain some solid, productive citizens instead.

Everytime I am on these boards I see the words liberals and conservatives thrown at people as insults along with bagger, racist etc.

This issue affects us all and we should not automatically generalize everyone that disagrees with your point of view on illegal immigration. Not all Liberals (Dems) are supporters of illegal immigration and I am sure that there are at least a few LOL! Conservatives (Repubs) who are not for the revision of the 14th Birth Right Law.

I for one support restrictions being placed on Birth Right Automatic Citizenship in regards to the children of illegals. I am a 47 yr. old woan who usually votes Dem.
03:57 PM on 08/16/2010
I am an EX dem who belongs to neither party because the both worth for the corporations and not for the voters. There is no diffrerence between them They are just two flavors of the same rotten Koolaide.
But I too, used vote dem and I am 100% in favor of changing the birthright law. It is obsolete and only serves as a carrot for pregnant Mexican women to cross the desert hoping that belly will buy them the American dream. It does get them 20 K in free benefits/cash aid annually so perhaps it is their Amrican dream. But it is putting hospitals out of business and destroying our schools. In California elementary schools 1 in 3 students is an illegal alien. We used to lead the nation in test scores now we are at the bottom with places like Mississippi and Alabama.
04:33 PM on 08/16/2010
L live in Los Angeles, I do not have children but I do live near an elementary and a high school so I do agree with your regarding the school system. I have lived in LA for almost 20 years it just gets worse everyday. The fact that we are a Sanctuary City totally pisses me off as I do not understand how these types of cities are permitted to exist. They have decided to completely ignore our immigration laws. But let a city or state attempt to even enforce the immigration laws that already exist let alone create new ones and they are persecuted by our own government. I do not understand this mind set.

I understand that the bigots will jump on this bandwagon to promote their own racist agenda, but for most of us it has nothing to do with race, it is common sense. I value my US citizenship and do not believe that it should be just automatically given to those who break our laws. I have to follow every law in this country or I will get into trouble. But this does not apply to illegals!

You have to be delutional to believe jus soli is NOT a big incentive for illegals to come here. Remove that incentive along with housing and employment and that will deter many of them from coming here and others will self deport. Have a great day.

The 14th admendment does not give automatic citizenship to babies of foreign nationals.
Thats a myth.
Their parents are citizens of another country and therefore their babies are citizens of THEIR country.
Originaly even Native Americans were not citizens by birth under the 14th because they had their own government and were citizens of that government.
04:42 PM on 08/16/2010
I agree that is not the intent of the 14th amendment. I went on line and read it just to make sure that I was not missing something.

But it has been misinterpretated for so long that the original meaning has been lost to our law makers at aleast. So it needs to be Re-interpretated and made clear that jus soli Does Not apply to illegals.

The number of children born in the United States to illegal immigrants rose from 2.7 million in 2003 to 4 million in 2008.

Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/14/AR2009041401433.html

The study, which analyzed census statistics, found that US-born children now account for 73 percent of all children of illegal immigrants. And children of illegal immigrants - including those born overseas - now account for 6.8 percent of elementary and secondary school students nationwide and more than 1 in 10 students in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada and Texas.

Section 1;

Very few here either don't know... don't want to know, or just don't care about the precepts and the values that were imbued into our beloved Bill of Rights.

Our Founders, in their infinite wisdom, recognized that the "majority" can be just as tyrannical as any Monarch could be... as any despot or dictator could be, and that even "Democracy" has certain limits. Those limits are beautifully described in the Preamble to our Declaration of Independence..

UNALIENABLE RIGHTS.. a concept never institutionalized as law in all of history before!!!

Rights that can never be torn from anyone while in this country, not by the government, not even by the "majority". Our forebears were describing ‘human rights’, not just for those who were lucky enough to be born here or even those who had entered without the proper paperwork, but everyone.

How do you associate Unailenable Rights with one staying in a country illegally? No one is suggesting that we do bad things or inhumane things to these people, we just want the to go home. If they want to take thier child with them then that is fine, if not then give the child duel citizen ship and let them come back when they can take care of themselfs.

Why do you want all of the illegals to stay so badly?

Section 2;

What many don’t seem to understand is that ALL people, while under the jurisdiction of our government, whether or not they are "citizens", whether or not they are here "legally" are protected by our Bill of Rights as well. It includes those who are in foreign territories in which the U.S. holds sovereign status such as military installations, embassies and consulates.

This is established law and has been for well over a century now.

The fact that some here are willfully ignoring this, or are too paralyzed by their fear to realize that this is what we ARE as a People.. as a Nation, is something that they need to search their own souls for before it’s too late for them and they become completely consumed by their hatred.

But no matter how many people insist on marching back in time, all too willing and even eager to destroy, for the sake of expediency, those sacred protections that took centuries of sorrow and millions of lives to create and to protect, they will never define us again.

Decent, enlightened Americans will always stand in their way.

"INDIVIDUALTERRY" is, as are all “Libertarians” ("Teabaggers", “Objectivists", “Austrian Schoolers”, "fiscal conservatives" or whatever they are calling themselves today)... hinging his personal philosophies on the rantings of a lủnatic-fringe Congressman from Texas and a fifth rate novelist who's putrid worldview is an anathema to every concept of civil society. He thinks that civilization ends at the threshold of the "free market", which is just a another transparent, winger euphemism for "jungle law".

He constantly reaps the benefits provided him but refuses to be responsible enough to actually contribute to them, leeching off of the very system that affords him the opportunities to enrich himself, while ironically accusing the least amongst us of doing the same.

He feels that those who might not have been as lucky as he (or as callous) should fend for themselves and be relegated to a life of illness, poverty and wretchedness simply because he is too avaricious to do his part as a member of our society, to do his duty as an American.

It really is just about greed, nothing more, nothing less, and his flaccid insistence and phony attempts at loftiness.. that his 'philosophy' is a "moral" or "political" or even an "ideological" stand is merely a way for him to shrink from his own shame, that is, if he's still capable of such.

He is the dictionary definition of malignant narcissism, and he is only fooling himself.

Many of these families have children born here... our fellow citizens.

What we all fail to grasp sometime, amidst the fiery rhetoric and the demagoguery (or refuse to understand) is that many would rather live on the streets here then where they came.

After having escaped places where violent drug wars, lawlessness and despotism... where prosecutors and judges are kidnapped and kỉlled... places where thousands are "disappeared"... priests, nuns, writers, artists, musicians, union workers, political reformers…. children.

Running from places that afford them not a single opportunity to provide for their families or even to exist at all without the constant fear of their own government…. literally fleeing for their lives.

Just as our own forebears did 100 years ago to escape the potato famines... 60 years ago to escape the Näzis... 40 years ago to escape the K'mer Rouge, 15 years ago to escape the Balkins...

I’m not saying that we should be opening our borders to all.. there are rules and they need to be abided by. But all of the venomous rhetoric.. the unreasonable fear.. the condemnation of an entire class of people due to the crimes of a extreme minority amongst them... the bigotry and the racism…the palpable hatred that many are spewing is demeaning us ALL.

These people are HUMAN BEINGS, ferchrissakes… and we, as a PEOPLE should be better than that. We MUST be better than that before this cancer consumes us all.

If you knew anything about what the Tea Party wanted you would know that they feel protection of the citizens of the United States is the governments #1 job. There is a difference between that and forcing people to buy health care, or giving tax dollars to unions. I know for a fact that if they just let the states enforce their own immigration laws they would be fine with that.
04:26 PM on 08/16/2010
If only the government hadnt created the problem in the FIRST place states wouldnt have to deal with the effects that are damaging to thier citizens. Protection is about the one thing we should all agree on that is the governments job. And if they dont do it then why should the states be penalized for protecting citozens the feds have neglected to protect?
You are right! It is NOT the governments job to FORCE taxpayers to purchase health insurance from the same souless companies that already pout profit over our lives!
