At 57, Dan Grinstead is old enough to be a grandfather. But this Iowa man is not letting that stop him from serving his country. Instead, the former hospital social worker has joined the Iowa National Guard and trains alongside 2,800 other American soldiers.

Grinstead got the idea to join the guard two years ago after hearing stories of the high suicide rate among soldiers. He will be 60 by the time his troop deploys.

NBC Nightly News reported on this story as part of their "Making A Difference" series.
