Rand Paul: EPA Stifling Coal Sector, Needs To Be Kept Out Of Kentucky Affairs

(AP) - Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul took harsh digs at President Barack Obama while mining for votes in Kentucky coalfields Saturday, saying busybody regulators backed by the president are stifling the coal sector.

Paul vowed to challenge Obama "every step of the way" if elected in November, seeking to capitalize on a political environment where flocks of voters have never warmed to the Democratic president.

The Tea Party-backed Paul never mentioned his Democratic opponent, Jack Conway, in his speech at a coal appreciation event in Knott County, instead reserving his attacks for Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and federal environmental regulators.

Paul claimed Obama "cares nothing about Kentucky and cares even less about Kentucky coal."

"We have a president who is forcing the EPA down our throats," Paul said. "Even without changing the rules, the EPA is stifling the permit process, and people (are) out of work here because of the president and his policies.

"With all due respect, Mr. President, you're wrong, and you need to stay out of Kentucky affairs. And you need to keep the EPA out of our affairs because we need jobs, and we're not going to get jobs with a busybody EPA that's in our way."

Paul made overtures to coal families by proclaiming himself a coal ally who would "defend your way of life." The Bowling Green eye doctor has come under attack from members of the United Mine Workers who recently said they were alarmed by Paul's suggestions in a magazine interview that elected officials in Washington shouldn't be setting coal mining rules.

After his speech, Paul said all levels of government have a role in regulating the coal industry, adding that his preference generally is for "more local over federal" oversight.

Paul, an advocate for more limited government, suggested the need for a broad review of coal regulations to determine what's working.

Conway, the state attorney general, has won the UMW's endorsement in the race to succeed Republican Sen. Jim Bunning, who is retiring after two terms.

Conway spokesman John Collins said the Democratic candidate would be a strong defender of the coal sector because it creates good-paying jobs, attracts industry and fosters low electricity rates.

"That's why he opposes any and all cap-and-trade legislation, which unfairly punishes coal states like Kentucky and raises utility rates," Collins said.

Paul has accused Conway of flip-flopping on the cap-and-trade energy plan, which would create economic incentives to limit heat-trapping gases from power plants, vehicles and other sources. Detractors, including Paul, claim the plan would punish the coal industry and raise electricity rates.

Meanwhile, Paul deflected questions about a recent GQ article describing an alleged prank during Paul's college days at Baylor University in Texas involving marijuana and worshipping an "Aqua Buddha."

By all means, put the regulators as close as possible to the money. The miners will be dying to maximize the conflict of interest and corruption that would encourage.

The states *should* be regulating their mines themselves, but their ability and willingness to do so is questionable.

Growing up, I did not know that coal plants produced large amounts of waste other than the soot and smoke. It was not until recent years that I learned the waste had toxic elements in it.

I would far rather have the EPA "forced down my throat" than the poisons of corporate greed and irresponsibility.

The true cost of "cheap" coal has gone unnoticed and unappreciated. It is time we know the truth, and recognize the full costs.

The gulf oil spill and the environmental movement. So far, the connection hasn't been made by the news media, yet it is obvious that the requirement to drill in the middle of nowhere have been driven by environmental politics.

And all this time, I thought they did it for the profits from the oil......
Where are all these easy to reach, provable reserves that cannot be drilled?

Yeah, that nasty EPA and those overbearing sissies at OSHA, nevermind the physically-present but mentally-absent MMS, all interfering with Kentucky's ability to cut as many corners as possible in making money mining coal. Who cares if a bunch of miners die unnecessarily, right? They knew the risks, they volunteered, nobody forced them into this job, right? The workers want the profits, too, and don't really care about the safety - that's the message. So nearly 50 guys die in the course of a year, who cares? Cheap coal, that's what matters! Trees will grow back, other people will have babies, no harm, no foul. No soul, apparently, either.

The EPA is as bad as the rest of government including Rand's version. We have government shoved down our throats this far from a free society. If we do not accept any of this bloated government we are attacked with violence.

Better some government shoved down our throat than DDT, PCB, Endosulfan, Asbestos, Fumitoxin, etc., don't you think? Or our rivers starting on fire, again?
I'm not saying there isn't waste, corruption, and stupidity at all, but have you ever been to China? I have. Go sometime, try to breath the air for a couple of months, you come to appreciate the way it is here, believe me.

8/27/10, Bring back DDT. those lemon-fruity-eco-friendly nostrums just don't do the job.
these chems are perfectly safe when used properly.
I used to have an exterminator come in & fumigate the whole house. He would guarantee no roaches for six months; sure enough, after 6 mos you would see 1 or 2 and it would be time to do it again.
Now? Forget about it; these guys are either using little more that what you buy in a can or they're feeding them sugar. Preston Weiters, Jr.

Republicans are only happy when any branch of the government, but especially the EPA, is so small it is powerless, and what power it might have is appointed to industry executives..

A lot of departments and agencies have to be eliminate not just cut. Government spending is out of control and one of the clearest ways to stop it is to eliminate a lot of bureaucrats.

Rand Paul...named by his dotty old man after a whiny Russian woman, Ayn Rand.
A real winner.

No need to ask who's funding his campaign.

Politicians should be forced to wear their contributors' corporate logos sewn into their clothes, size and prominence in proportion to the size of the contribution, like NASCAR drivers.

If only the EPA's existence really COULD stifle the coal sector. This is why people don't listen to "facts" presented from the right or from the left. The emotion behind it inevitably cause sensationalism.

Under-regulated, non-union mining just cost 29 lives. Strip mining has left devastated communities and ecological disaster. It is past time for the EPA to clamp down on unsafe and environmentally harmful practices. Go Obama! Go EPA! Go UMW! Steam-roll this fringe element.
Rand Paul cares nothing about worker’s lives or the health of the environment. He is just a shill for the most backward elements of the greedy corporations.

He also sees seat-belt laws as infringing on his rights. His paranoia is just baffling.
11:20 AM on 08/17/2010
Seat-belt laws do infringe on individual liberty. If I choose not to wear one, I hurt only myself. Nobody else is going to be injured or die because I did not wear a seatbelt. My choice, my consequences, but the government has taken that choice from me in order to protect the insurance industry.

I understand where your going with this so sorry to quibble but.... actually you *could* hurt someone else if you are in a car/driving a car, have passengers and are in an accident and aren't wearing your seatbelt. The force of your body being flung around in the vehicle could do serious damage to another person.

How can you control a vehicle during an accident if your flung out the window or into the back seat? Professional drivers use safety devices and amateurs should especially use them. If you're injured in an accident while not wearing seat belts, be a REAL independent & pay the medical yourself.

But he doesn't have a problem with incarcerating (taking away the freedom of) someone for choosing to use the safest known psychotropic drug known to man (cannabis) instead of a pharmaceutical that has warning advertisements in magazines that take up three pages. He doesn't make any sense at all
