Steven Schwarzman: Obama Administration's Tax Proposals Are Like 'When Hitler Invaded Poland'

Schwarzman

Steven Schwarzman, the billionaire founder of private equity giant, the Blackstone Group, has long bemoaned bank bashing. But, on the subject of taxes, he's apparently not afraid to cast aspersions on the Obama administration.

Speaking to board members at a nonprofit recently, Newsweek reports that Schwarzman compared the recent Obama administration push to boost taxes on private equity firms to a "war... like when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939." (Hat tip to the Business Insider.)

If Schwarzman is okay with comparing the Obama administration to Hitler, he's not comfortable with anyone engaging in bank bashing. Earlier this year at Davos, Schwarzman argued that anti-Wall Street rhetoric would make banks "insecure" and actually decrease lending. In a subsequent Washington Post op-ed, Schwarzman warned that lending could decrease if banks feel "under siege."

The Hitler analogy was apparently fueled by Schartzman's disagreement with proposals to increase the rate at which private equity managers are taxed. A long-delayed bill would increase the tax rate on the 20-percent share of profits that private equity firms charge clients. Currently, these fees are taxed at the normal 15 percent income rate. The proposal would tax these fees as corporate income -- a 35 percent rate.

In short, the bill would require Wall Street's private equity titans to pay income taxes at the same rate as the rest of America.

Check out the full article at Newsweek.

The very definition of a tortured analogy.

Hey, let's remove the name of "Hitler" out of any subject or form of our national dialogue...

No matter how strongly you feel about any of our issues, if you evoke the name of "Hitler" your argument stinks; and you are a insensitve creep..

You are an idiot and do not deserve your position. A CEO s/b fired for a comment like that. You should pay at least as much of a percent in taxes as you chauffeur and hair dresser!

WT?????
To say something like this is like comparing apples and bananas. There is no comparison and how would he know, was he with the Germans or was he even in Poland at the time?
People say the dumbest things sometimes.

Perhaps this poor lad suffers from that newly identified "every democrat's a nazi" personality disorder known as phugginahsaholitisneurosis. Just a thought.

I`ve met and spoken to Mr. Schwarzman in several group settings over the years and he strikes me as a v v intelligent and savvy businessman. Business is business...NO emotions should ever be involved. Money goes wherever capital, labor and taxes are low or non-existent.
To the people who are always whining about the rich- start your own business and create your own wealth rather than complaining about the Schwarzman`s of the world.
I bet if you did just that you wouldn`t have the time that you do now to visit HP and post sooo much populist rhethoric.
The sun comes up for EVERYONE. If Schwarzman made a huge fortune maybe you could make a small one and thereafter give it to charity if that`s your thing.
Good luck to all... but stop the whining!

As an American he should pay his FAIR SHARE. He is now paying less than his hairdresser! Get a life! It has nothing to do with business but his personal wealth what every way it is earned.
03:49 AM on 08/29/2010
Sorry.
Altruism and idealism have absolutely no place in business.
The hairdresser has earned income which the IRS taxes at the highest tax rate.
Mr. Schwarzman has no ordinary income but LT cap gains that the IRS taxes at 15% or less.

Don`t villify him bc the IRS laws allow him to pay just 15%.

"Get a life" is a tired adolescent cliche.

"Fair share" is populist nonsense.

Ivy Greed CEOs and their minion learn to desensitize themselves from human emotions and are wired to not even see anyone who is not in their same status circles , as humans at all. This is so they do not use emotions to make business decisions. After all, its only business.. dont take it personally.
CEOS of this level just see us, the workers, the other 9,9% of the populous as nothing more than farm animals. We are the work horses, the pigs, the cattle, only there for income and meaning nothing else to them.
"All Animals are Equal,,"
Some Animals are more Equal than others"

And they said Animal Farm was about Communism. Its much more similar to Ivy Greed Capitalist than Socialist Communism.

These Blackstone thieves are doing a lot of public speaking. Peterson against Warren and Schwartzmann using accusations of "Hitler" against Obama.

Ah Shwartzman, what an a-hole! Let me tell you what happened when Blackstone "acquired" our company. About a month before they pounced, they made our management give an inservice on the perils of union membership. I'd been with the company for 15 years and we never had previous inservice on unions. They must have figured the coast was clear, so on April 15 we were told by management that all of our jobs in billing and collecting were going to Intelent an Indian company that Blackstone owns. Blackstone closed about 12 Billing centers around the US. Of course this was after they had outsourced our entire IT department to India also, that move cost 700 American jobs.We were forced to "train" our Indian replacements or we could not collect servernce pay or unemployment insurance. These Indians had zip medical knowledge and no knowledge of US regulations. We quickly became a cleanup team only. As expected the whole Indian occupation has tanked Apria Healthcare (our company). Now, I'm a senior citizen and when I'm in our groups I tell other members that Apria outsourced American jobs to India. Most seniors will replace an outsourcer if there is another provider and in my city, that's happening.

Good for you. It's important for people with first hand knowledge of the heartless greed of these corporations to tell others because lord knows the media is not covering it.

Billionaires are like when hitller invaded Poland for us poor folk because money=power, so billionaires have power over us like he did over the poles. I hope every billionaire meets his same fate.
Wealth in the face of poverty is an insult to humanity and an indictment of the heart of every rich monster.

Hitler and Stalin are just buzz words to describe not getting your way now. The Repubs love them but won't serve in the military in a combat arm. What punks.

Recognize that these comments are coming from Steve Schwarzman, who has been a big Dem fundraiser and supporter, and who was personally vetted by Teddy Kennedy to be Chairman of the Kennedy Center. He is not some sort of retrograde outlier. Now, I recognize that he probably doesn't know as much about money and economics as the resident geniuses here at HP, especially the "moderators", but he may know enought to be listened to before kneejerking the assaults on him from the "something for nothing" crowd that want lots of government programs -- all paid for by someone else.
