Ground Zero Mosque: Paterson Tries To Broker Deal For Alternate Location

ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. David Paterson, who last week suggested that developers of a proposed Islamic center and mosque near ground zero might want to consider a different location, will meet soon with them, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Paterson's office declined to say what the meeting would be about, but Rep. Peter King told The Associated Press that the governor wants to discuss possible alternate locations for the Park51 Islamic cultural center and mosque. King said he spoke with the governor Tuesday.

Representatives of the project said no meeting had been scheduled.

Paterson last week offered his help and the possibility that state land could be provided as an alternate site for the center. The project has ignited nationwide debate over freedom of religion and anger over the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The planned $100 million center would be built two blocks from the World Trade Center site, where nearly 2,800 people died when Islamic extremists flew jets into the twin towers. The project is headed by Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, a Muslim cleric who has worked to improve relations between Islam and the West.

Paterson spokesman Morgan Hook said talks were under way between the governor's office and representatives of Park51 to set up a meeting between Paterson and the project's leaders.

"We are working with the developers on a staff level, but there have not been any formal discussions between the governor and imam or developer," Hook said. "We expect to have a meeting scheduled in the near future."

Mosque spokesman Oz Sultan released a statement Tuesday saying he did not believe a meeting had been scheduled.

"We appreciate the governor's interest as we continue to have conversations with many officials," Sultan said.

When project developer Sharif El-Gamal was asked by a local news station if he planned to consider moving the project, he was adamant he would not: "Not at all," he told NY1 on Tuesday.

He added that the World Trade Center site is not even visible from the building where the center would be.

"In New York City, two blocks is a great distance," he said, adding that some buildings in the city have their own zip codes. "We are nowhere near the World Trade Center site."

One of the most strident opponents of the project, Republican candidate for governor Carl Paladino, supports the talks sought by the Democratic governor. A mosque near ground zero would be like erecting a Japanese Navy memorial at Pearl Harbor, Paladino said.

"If Governor Paterson's meeting brings about an agreeable legal solution which puts no burden on the taxpayers, it deserves full consideration," his spokesman Michael Caputo said.

The Washington Post first reported the talks were under way.

King, the ranking minority leader of the Homeland Security Committee, said that he had spoken to Paterson on Tuesday and that the governor expected the meeting to take place within days.

"He said he is meeting in the next day or so with the developers and the leaders of the mosque to discuss his proposal to move it to state land. My understanding was the imam is going to be there," King told The Associated Press.

Rauf was scheduled to leave this week on a two-week trip to the Middle East as part of a religious outreach effort by the Department of State.

Problems with obama mosque support can be listed:

1. Obama's tone was not one calculated to persuade. He both hectored and belittled those who oppose the GZM.

2. Obama supported the GZM argument is nothing but beating up a strawman of his choosing.

3. No one has questioned the right of Muslims to practice their religion the same as anyone else in this country. Ordinary  Read More...

It's the economy stupid!!! The Community Center with a place for prayer is not what you should be concerned about. There's already a mosque in the neighborhood. Go and govern. This isn't it!

This whole debate is so ridiculous and a waste of time and media.
Unreal what people latch on to.
08:18 PM on 08/18/2010
1. It's not even a Mosque !

2. It's not even at Ground Zero !

3. There is already an Islamic Community Center 4 blocks away, this would be 2 blocks away from one corner of the giant hole. + There's over 100 Mosques already in NYC.

4. This is closer to an Islamic YMCA/Chef school than anything, with a swimming pool, basketball court, auditorium, culinary center and yes a prayer room.

5. There is already a strip club and a sex toy shop 2 blocks from the "sacred" ground zero. Plus liquor stores and a peep show.

6. There are Christian churches in Hiroshima & Nagasaki, cities nuked by Christians.

7. Timothy McVeigh was raised as a Christian ... why not ban all Churches in Oklahoma City then?

8. Even Tehran, Iran allows for Synagogues to be built, and in fact has 4 of them!

9. WTC # 2 actually had a Muslim prayer room in it, and Muslims died on 9/11 in the towers as well

10. The Pentagon (also attacked on 9/11) has had in Mosque within its walls since 9/11 - for Muslims who work in the Pentagon ...

Come on repubs go back to telling us how important the bush tax cuts are for the rich. Explain how lack of revenue will help the country. Then vote down unemployment insurance for those without jobs.
Or go back to attacking the unemployed, or the Mexicans or the gays or how important it is to bankrupt our country to keep wars going and taxes low for the wealthy. Or how Obama is destroying the country or how SS should be abolished along with Medicare. Or how GREAT bp has been and how you love dirty coal, and the death it causes. Or how disconcerted about the pollution, and deaths in our gulf ocean. Or how you hate the very government you work. Or how the 14 amendment should be changed so we can prosecute (babies) and those different. All these ideas are drown out by the nonsensical talk of a few blocks from (scare me) ground 0.
10:11 AM on 08/18/2010
Is Governor Paterson also going to talk to Masjid Manhattan about moving their location further than four blocks also although they've been there for 40 years? What about all of the Muslim restaurants that are in the area? How about just removing Muslims from the metrolpolitan area to make the Muslim haters happy?
I see what kind of nation we're becoming :-/

We Muslims know the Ground Zero mosque is meant to be a deliberate provocation

So what gives Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf of the "Cordoba Initiative" and his cohorts the misplaced idea that they will increase tolerance for Muslims by brazenly displaying their own intolerance in this case?

Do they not understand that building a mosque at Ground Zero is equivalent to permitting a Serbian Orthodox church near the killing fields of Srebrenica where 8,000 Muslim men and boys were slaughtered?

"If Governor Paterson's meeting brings about an agreeable legal solution which puts no burden on the taxpayers, it deserves full consideration," his spokesman Michael Caputo said."

Paladino, that is such an inappropriate analogy. The appropriate analogy would be, "Building a mosque near ground zero is like building a Catholic church near an elementary school."

Why is this analogy better? Because it takes the actions of a few which are in comport with neither the followers or the faith itself and acts on that. Your analogy equates a country's decision with the acts of a few extremists.

Gov. Paterson's offer, whatever it may be, will indeed put a burden on the taxpayer. A taxpayer's money goes to the government, a government run by the constitution. If this constitution can be compromised due to location, then the slippery slope is sufficiently greased to allow for other rights to soon follow, be it they be rights of Muslimericans or any other American.

May God have mercy on us all.

Some American's just do not get it , this isn't about a mosque . Its about American's and what kind of people WE are . Are we the kind of people we portray ourselves as to the rest of the world or are we the kind of hypocrites who say one thing and do another ? There was a mosque in the World Trade Center and that did not stop the attack did it ? We either have religious freedom for everyone or we do not and if American's now decide we do not then we are no better than our attackers . Are we going to be the America that our founders envisioned or is our country finished as a beacon for freedom ? If the 9/11 attackers hated us for our freedom as has been said then they apparently wasted their lives ............................

Good job Patterson. You're at least trying to dig us out of the whole that Obama dug with his gaffe. Building bridges requires listening to those who you are building a bridge to, and if the Cardoba was truly a bridge they would realize that they are not welcome on this particular site. But unfortunately, they want to make a symbolic statement, and too many of us are supporting this group who do not support basic western rights and values.

It seems that they are not welcome anywhere. Too bad, that neighborhood could do with a nice building in the midst of sex shops and strip bars - I guess they are signs of respect for the victims of 9/11 unlike a community center intended to promote moderation and reason.

There is a Mosque there already . It's been there for 40 years . Since this is a sparsely populated neighborhood expect for the wealthy , I doubt they need a second Mosque there.

It would be a sad day for America if opponents successfully kill plans for a mosque proposed near the World Trade Center site.

This whole issue was fully manufactured by Fox News (with the help of a blogger) as a wedge issue, and to make Americans more afraid of Muslims, and to promote hatred.

Is it
America Land of the free
or
America land of the fear.

If fear now rules, and the mosque is denied due to fear, then it will be a sad day for Americans.
A compromise as David Paterson is suggesting might be useful, but you cannot compromise with bigotry.

bluguy8, yours is one of the stupidest arguments in this debate.

Yes, there is another mosque near, actually there are two. Both are too small to accommodate the local Muslim population which has grown along with the population increase over the last 40 years.

Your argument is stupid because you failed to do your homework, and just went with a Fox News faux fear talking point.

This is the trouble with trying to be accommodating to bigotry, you get sucked into being a part of the problem.

Don't be critical of my Governor. He is doing a wonderful job despite the treachery he suffered at the hands of President Obama, the State legislature and the NYC press. He weathered it all with dignity and he continued doing his job throughout. Thanks to him, we have a workable state budget in spite of the biggest financial crisis in our history. As always, with reference to the mosque, he is trying to bring resolution and compromise. People are always asking why we don't get better politicians and public servants. But, when we do -- as with Governor Paterson -- we toss them aside for others with bigger political names. He may have been treated badly, but David Paterson remains a hero to me!

Thank you Gov. Paterson. He hasn't given up his job and he listens. I appreciate his dedication. Unlike our President who continues to sympathize with Muslims against his own Americans. Obama is definitely more muslim than American. Gitmo, Xmas bomber, Mirandize, KSM trials, and now his mosque opinion. He fights for Muslin rights as a "Citizen of the world" and turns around and sues his own "people" in Arizona, again against those who live here wanting the laws enforced. I really believe Obama is the wrong man at any time.

"Unlike our President who continues to sympathize with Muslims against his own Americans"

You do realize that the majority of those "Muslims" you refer to ARE AMERICANS?
OH, I get it! You mean they aren't Americans like YOU!
If YOU represent America, I wasted 20 years of my life, one knee and a spleen...
