GOP Committee Falsely Pins 'Incumbent' Title On Dem Challenger

First Posted: 08/17/10 07:45 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 06:25 PM ET

Burr Marshall
The NRSC's web site listed Democratic challenger Elaine Marshall as the incumbent instead of sitting Republican Senator Richard Burr, who has served since 2005.

In an anti-incumbent election it helps, above all else, to be the party out of power. That's why Republican candidates and campaign committees are beaming with optimism as November approaches. When voters look for politicians on whom they can take out their anger, it will be Democrats, by and large, on the receiving end.

But what happens when it's the Republican who is the one in office? In a number of races, the GOP is grappling with this problem. And for a brief moment on Tuesday, operatives trotted out a rather innovative solution: simply label the Democratic challenger the incumbent.

"Help Defeat Elaine Marshall!" the National Republican Senatorial Committee's website read earlier in the day. "For nearly two years, America has suffered from the liberal Democrat's control of Washington and if Elaine Marshall is sent back to the Senate, we can only expect more of the same: increased spending and soaring national debt."

Marshall, the current North Carolina Secretary of State, has never served in the Senate before. So sending her "back" there would be, well, impossible. Her opponent in the race, Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) has served in the upper chamber since 2004 and in Congress at large since 1995. Incumbency, indeed, is one of the main reasons his re-election contest remains close.

By mid-afternoon on Tuesday, the NRSC had corrected its site. "For nearly two years," it read, "America has suffered from the liberal Democrat's control of Washington and if Elaine Marshall is elected to the Senate, we can only expect more of the same: increased spending and soaring national debt."

But that was after a Democratic source made a screen grab of the page for the Huffington Post (pasted below). Asked for comment, NRSC spokesman Brian Walsh copped to a clerical error but managed to poke fun at Marshall for being the Democratic Party's second choice for the Senate nomination.

"This was a simple database error that was quickly corrected," he said. "But while the Democrats are trying to draw attention to this, I should also admit that we're guilty of plagiarism as well - we borrowed the first sentence 'help defeat Elaine Marshall' from Democrats in Washington after we watched them spend over $200,000 trying to defeat Elaine and elect Cal Cunningham as their nominee instead. So I guess none of us are perfect."

I hope the Dems start hitting Burr on his opposition to legislation that would permit women working for US contractors abroad to sue that contractor if they are gang-raped by fellow contractors. I assume the Dems are holding this back a bit until closer to the election. Burr should be called to account for a clearly anti-female, pro-business position on this.

Its amazing that is almost always the GOP or Republican interest that make these 'errors'.
Fox news is famous for it. Whenever a Republican of note gets into trouble they somehow almost always manage to get their party affiliation wrong.
And lets not forget the Shirly Sherrod incident because you know "all Democrats look alike", right?

But I am really getting tired of these non apologies by the right: "Sure we apologies, but it was your fault in the first place for running against us and this is why". This is getting to juvenile for words.

These people are two-year olds. This is why i hate politics. It's a bunch of school yard bullies trying to get that last punch in before the teacher pulls them away. Except there are no teachers. The bullies are running the school. And our country.

It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

Those Republicans will do anything to win, and turn around and tell the public that's a perfectly OK attitude. It's not -- it is unethical and immoral. Winning is fine if it's above-board, not if it's under-handed.

This is so typical of the GOP in NC. It is also typical of Richard Burr. They lie, and then act offended when someone calls them on it. Burr has done NOTHING for NC. He is a self-entitled rich boy, who thinks that he is better than anyone else because he has lots of money. Elaine Marshall would be a far superior Senator. She appears to have some integrity, and some common sense. Probably won't win, however because of the right wingers who get all their information from Fauxnooz.

Well he votes NO and a lot more NOs on anything that will help the average American citizen or middle class and votes yes on every bill that will help his rich corporate friends.

He's voted No on every small business relief act, in which the Repubs are always saying on TV how they want to help get Americans back to work as if they care, but Burr votes no every single time against the Small Business relief act that will help small businesses stay afloat and stay in business so they can hire.

I was amused the other McConnell was on a talk show denying Republicans had "obstructed" and pointing to the success of Dem's legislative agenda as some kind of proof they hadn't obstructed enough. Since the GOP had no solutions to offer and saw its job as obstructing, it was odd to hear McConnell admit that they didn't even do that part well.

Database error? A database error is when you put a decimal place in the wrong spot. A database error is when you mark someone as wanting to receive an email when they don’t want to receive an email… To claim that a database error is responsible for the error on the website is to imply that what is written on the website is generic enough to have information inserted like a form letter.

The “error” was deliberate…just like every time the “error” is made of FoxNews when some Republican who’s been caught out in a bad situation gets a little (D) next to their name.

Own it.

Republicans are liars. We need to repeat it over and over to everyone we talk to between now and election day. Just another example of republicans lying. What else is new.

A good friend of mine says "If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying."

I do realize that the correct verb should be "isn't," but I wanted to make sure all of my Mama Grizzilies and Pit Bulls with lip stick could have a chance to read the post.

Um, make a correction. "Aren't" is the correct verb there, not isn't.
But I bet my sister's didn't catch that.
