Arizona Immigration Law: Legislators Shelve Idea Of Changing Law

PHOENIX — Arizona legislators are setting aside Gov. Jan Brewer's suggestion that lawmakers consider changing parts of the state's controversial immigration law.

Brewer on July 30 floated the idea of making "tweaks" to the law shortly after a federal judge blocked implementation of numerous provisions. Legislative aides said Tuesday the idea has been shelved, at least temporarily, mainly because of the state's pending appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

"Everyone agreed ... that it would have been acting in haste to act at this point," said Victor Riches, chief of staff for the House's Republican majority.

There's still a possibility that lawmakers could take up the issue in the future but nothing is in the works now, Riches added.

Brewer spokesman Paul Senseman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Brewer didn't suggest specific changes to the law but expressed a willingness to consider changes in response to the preliminary injunction issued July 28 by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton.

Legislative leaders voiced skepticism about Brewer's idea from the get-go but had aides review it before concluding that no immediate action should be taken.

"It's in the middle of the appeal process. We need to see how at least what the 9th Circuit says," said Greg Jernigan, general counsel to Senate Republicans.

Legislative aides said Brewer raised the possibility of considering changes to the immigration law during a brief special session held last week on an unrelated topic, but she ultimately didn't include it in her special session call.

Jernigan noted that the appellate court has agreed to put the case on a fast track, scheduling a hearing on the case in early November.

Although lawmakers could narrow the reach of a blocked provision barring release of arrested people pending checks of their immigration status, it wasn't realistic to consider changing other provisions blocked by Bolton on grounds that they're pre-empted by federal authority over immigration matters, Jernigan said.

The pre-emption issue will have to be settled by the courts, Jernigan added.

Besides the provision on immigration checks for arrested people, blocked provisions included a requirement that police check a person's status while enforcing other laws if there's a reasonable suspicion the person is in the United States illegally. Bolton also blocked provisions that required immigrants to carry their papers and banned immigrants from soliciting employment in public places.

Anti-immigration fans really should check out the Chamber of Commerce stance on immigration.

How about this? Any illegal alien who comes forward and is background checked out and has no criminal record in his home country we keep them and deport a politician. If the illegal alien has a valuable trade experience or a degree we keep them and deport a bankster or a lawyer.

Various Gopees/trollies are under the misapprehension that "illegals' are creating a huge crime wave in Arizona. Of course, nothing is further from the truth, here's are link to Arizona's raw crime data. They have not created percentagaes; but, it's easy enough to sea that the crime rate has been falling despite the increase in population.

The crime rate in Arizona is about 23% higher than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 90.6% of the crime rate in Arizona which is 25% higher than the national rate. The remaining 12.2% are violent crimes and are about 2% lower than other states. The following graph shows how Arizona compared to the rest of the states.

So? Without looking I bet Illinois, Washington, California, Georgia, and Virginia are higher than the national average. Are they being plagued by illegal Canadian immigrants, perhaps? In order for there to be an average some states are going to be higher and some are going to be lower. or didn't they teach you that in where you went to school?

But, more pertinently, what about the phony assertions of a crime wave fueled by illegals? What about Governor Brewer's ludicrous claim of "headless corbses" littering the desert, a claim so absurd various Arizona law enforcement law enforcement agencies felt it necessary to step forward to contradict her publicly.?"

And, just to reiterate, Arizona's crime is falling and has been for several years. Nothing you and anyone can say changes that fact. Anyone who says differently is lying; just like they do when they speak of headless corbses littering the desert.

I think what should happen is that the Dems over there should put in a provision that says that anyone suspected of being in the country illegally should be prevented from going to these private prisons and should only be able to be housed in a gov't controlled facility since only the Federal Gov't is able to determine who's here illegally. See how much you find those that are so intent on forcing this law through begin caterwauling about how unfair it is after saying all that their only concern was over keeping their state safe. Besides, it costs more to run a for profit prison than it does a gov't one.

Actually, Brewer and some other Tea-Bagger Arizonans favor COMPLETELY turning THE ENTIRE ARIZONA GOVERNMENT over to prvate contractors.

This is a state that is so short on cash (because they keep their taxes ridiculously low, and hate government and social services) that they literally sold off some of their government buildings to private-sector companies and then LEASED THEM BACK.

Or maybe you could have thought about why the border states are having such a hard time dealing with the crime coming across the border and what the Federal gov't should do about it? In case you haven't noticed we just got a major border bill passed with money, manpower, and equipment. Co-incidence?

Brewer and followers make the mistake of over-simplifying the problem. The truth is there are no quick fixes. Our Mexican neighbor is experiencing an unconventional war and is losing control. You bet President Obama is paying attention. It doesn't mean we are told everything that is being done at the source.

It's good they changed the idea (Brewer's idea?). They've already got as much political mileage out of the law as possible.

OMG. It is about cheap labor, not about lazy Americans and jobs they won't do. It's not about racism after-all. It's about taking peoples' jobs. It is about money earned at home and spent at home just like those redneck patriots were saying. (Notice they left out the word Illegal).

After a wave of raids by federal immigration agents on Labor Day weekend, a local chicken-processing company called Crider Inc. lost 75 percent of its mostly Hispanic 900-member work force. The crackdown threatened to cripple the economic anchor of this fading rural town.

But for local African-Americans, the dramatic appearance of federal agents presented an unexpected opportunity. Crider suddenly raised pay at the plant. An advertisement in the weekly Forest-Blade newspaper blared "Increased Wages" at Crider, starting at $7 to $9 an hour -- more than a dollar above what the company had paid many immigrant workers. The company began offering free transportation from nearby towns and free rooms in a company-owned dormitory near to the plant.

For the first time in years, local officials say, Crider aggressively sought workers from the area's state-funded employment office -- a key avenue for low-skilled workers to find jobs. Of 400 candidates sent to Crider -- most of them black -- the plant hired about 200. Do illegal immigrants take jobs from low-skilled American workers? The answer in Stillmore initially appeared to be yes.

"Still struggling to fill its ranks, Crider began busing in felons on probation from a state prison and residents of a homeless mission from nearby Macon."

"A Hispanic worker at the plant said he recognized some of the new workers as among those who had been dismissed prior to the federal raids for having false immigration documents."

"Crider is still about 300 people short of its work force before the immigration raids. It is now bringing Laotian Hmong immigrant workers and their families from Minnesota and Wisconsin, with hopes that they'll stay on the job and build new roots in Stillmore."

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!! A country that loves its citizens so much it displaced hundreds of illegal workers to give marginalized populations a chance at the American Dream. Like convicted felons-prisoners and even homeless people, and multiple minority communities are seeing hope. The American dream is coming back. GOD BLESS America.

There are other accounts out there
--------------------------------------------------------

Hundreds seek to fill vacant positions at Pro’s Ranch Market.

Job hunters turned out in the hundreds to fill recently-vacant positions at Pro’s Ranch Market stores, where a federal audit led to the firing of some 300 workers.

Roxanne Nieves, one of the many that came out in search of a job, said she came to apply after she heard about the layoffs.

“We heard they are firing a lot of illegal people, so we’re here to apply,” she said.

About 300 of the 1,500 total employees at the six Phoenix supermarkets were let go this week after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement audit found them to be working illegally.

“The company wouldn’t know if someone is using counterfeit documents,” Pace said.

Pace also called on the federal government to help companies comply with hiring laws.

“We need an easy program for employers to use to hire people — safe, easy, quick — so we don’t have to deal with ICE audits,” she said.

Pro’s Ranch Market is among some 1,600 U.S. businesses, including 84 in Arizona, that have undergone ICE audits since July 2009.

ICE says the goal is to reduce demand for illegal employment and protect job opportunities for the nation’s lawful workforce.

I hope you are pointing out Crider for how they have stolen from the American people. Wow they raised their pay rate to 7 to 9 dollars an hour. Lets look at those rates.

That means someone can make 280 to 360 dollars a week or 14,560 to 18,720 a year. That is well below poverty wage. But hey, that's OK they should just get another job. Why should they enjoy life? After all they are just the common people, they have no expectations.

Ahhh to live and die in the greatest country in the world. Not so much the greatest country anymore.
