  First Posted: 8/19/10   Updated: 5/25/11

Today is Hot and Spicy Food Day, and for those of us that can't get enough of the tear-inducing, tongue-numbing good stuff, here's a list of the Top 10 spiciest foods in Los Angeles. Restaurants like Jitlada, Babita's, and Bombay Cafe dare thrill-seekers with menu items marked "challenge" or "warning," with Orochon Ramen even offering a "Wall of Bravery" for people who conquer the jalapeno-topped chilli ramen in 30 minutes or less. Are you up for the challenge?

This article made me hungry for that bloody Mary breakfast at Ye Rustic Inn, So the BF and I checked it out. We loved it even if it was too dark to read the LAT

Big Wangs? It's legal to be called that? Given the picture, it might as well also be called Giant Cocks.

I've always wanted to take a person who's spent his life eating an all-American diet, and trick him into eating Ethiopian food. Most likely, he would go all Roger Rabbit.

The writer (and taster) should be careful of Indian food. The hot dishes of India often start slow and then build to a deafening crescendo. I had an Indian "spicy" shrimp dish and didn't think it was that hot but the more I ate the hotter it got. I could hardly finish the dish and the people eating with me had a good laugh. The heat stayed around for a fair amount of time too.

As I understand it, India has the world's hottest pepper. The naga jolokia is MUCH hotter than the jalapeno.

Let us, at least in a food setting, distinguish between "spicy" and "hot". Cumin is spicy, but it is not hot. Cayenne is hot but not particularly spicy. We in the industry refer to cayenne as "clean heat". Customers always ask if my spice blends are spicy. All of my spice blends are spicy not all are hot. I know even the word hot can be confusing in a food context. Maybe we need more descriptive words. Anyone got the OED handy?

The endorphines (sp?) released while sweating and crying over food truly can be amazing. I recall a Thai restaurant in N. Denver (years ago) that always had crushed peanuts on the table to cool the burn (people who KNOW, know that water only makes it worse). I've been known to unplug my phone and eat a jar of jalapenos, uninterrupted; yes getting high. Can't find the brand I loved anymore, maybe that's a good thing as I was addicted. That Ramen looks and sounds completely incredible, I'd just need a private booth with curtains :-)

Jitlada is the real deal for Thai food. Only place I've eaten that tasted at all like food in Thailand. BTW, there is no such dish as "BBQ Thai Chicken" in Thailand. :-}

I just spent a month in the US and couldn't find anything that I considered remotely hot. I even dared a couple of Mexican restaurants to make me some super-hot salsa... nah, I could gargle with what they gave me. I guess after 18 years in Thailand I've either ruined my sense of spice or I'm a pepper god! LOL

The dishes shown here sure do look tasty.

I've had the habanero at Chichen Itza and didn't think it was too spicy, it was just right!

Spicy mabo tofu I can live with (although I've never tried that particular place) but man, that Orochon ramen in LA's Little Tokyo is a self-inflicted wound. You have to be a real_masochist to try it.

Question: You know what a masochist is, don't you?

I ate the special ramen IN THE TIME LIMIT and it was not that hot, actually It was a lot of soup with some sliced jalapenos.
Strangely, however, my photo is not on the wall or website. I am not a cute college kid or ComicCon attendee, but hey, I finished the soup- put the old white guy's pic up on the wall, guys.

The first three I voted 10 ....

I'm feeling as if I've died and gone to food heaven.

Habaneros, ooh, ouch, over the top heat! I have friends that attend chili festivals, and soak up the hot.
