Obama's In Martha's Vineyard, But Can He Really Relax?

MARK S. SMITH   08/20/10 08:05 PM ET   AP

Obama Vacation

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. — In the first full day of a Martha's Vineyard vacation, President Barack Obama set aside some of the cares of office Friday to work on his family's summer reading list.

At a bookstore in this upscale New England resort, Obama chose for his daughters a fiction classic set in the Jim Crow South – and for himself a sprawling summer epic about the downfall of a family that moves from the Midwest to Washington.

Parallels anyone?

Obama – wearing a polo shirt and ball cap – emerged from the Bunch of Grapes bookstore carrying a brown paper bag and preceded by Sasha, 9, and Malia, 12, who's rejoined the family after her first summer camp.

Inside the bag was "Freedom" by Jonathan Franzen, aides reported. The novel portrays a family of urban homesteaders in St. Paul, Minn., who decamp to the nation's capital. It's not on sale yet, but the store gave him an advance copy. The president also purchased "Tinkers" by Paul Harding and "A Few Corrections" by Brad Leithauser, the bookstore said.

For the girls, the president bought two volumes: "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee and "The Red Pony" by John Steinbeck, a cashier said.

Lee's 1960 novel, a staple in English classrooms, centers on a rape trial in small-town Alabama and a white lawyer who defends a black man accused of the crime. A lesson in tolerance and integrity, it's seen through the eyes of the lawyer's 6-year-old daughter.

The bookstore visit set the tone for the Obamas' 10-day sojourn on Martha's Vineyard: learned, laid-back and family oriented.

Despite regular briefings on intelligence and other matters, the president was hoping for a stay dominated by downtime – from drowsing at the beach to stops at trademark ice cream shops.

And plenty of golf. Three hours after his bookstore visit, Obama was at Vineyard Golf Club, teeing off under bright sunshine and temperatures in the low '80s. His foursome included House Democratic Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina.

The Vineyard stay – Obama's second August in a row on the island off Cape Cod – was a welcome respite after another turbulent period, which saw the Gulf oil leak finally plugged and the last U.S. combat brigade leave Iraq, but also fresh signs that the recovery is stalling and another slump in poll numbers for his handling of the economy.

On Friday, Obama got this upbeat news on the Mideast: Israeli and Palestinian negotiators will resume direct peace talks in September. They'd been stalled for months by haggling over Jewish settlements.

Meantime, outside the bookshop, crowds quickly formed behind yellow police tape as word of Obama's visit spread.

Brendan Murphy, 14, of Simsbury, Conn., was inside when the president entered, and handed Obama a copy of his memoir, "Dreams from My Father", to autograph.

He wished Obama a nice vacation, reported Murphy's father, Ed. The president responded: "'You, too. We're hoping to.'"

As to golf, that's rapidly become an Obama passion. Since taking office, the president has gone golfing 44 times, according to Mark Knoller, a CBS White House reporter who keeps meticulous records on such things.

That includes four outings here last summer, but does not include the miniature golf he played with Sasha last weekend in Panama City, Fla.

I love the majority of liberal responses.."well, Bush took more!" Come on folks. You try and justify this President's lack of engagement by comparing him to George Bush Jr...not the greatest Republican President in the world. The bottom line is "yes", George Bush had more vacation days his first year in office. Congratulations, you won a pointless argument. The issue is that this country is in a political, economic, and social crisis. Don't you think that a President, no matter who it is or what his political or religious affiliation would be, should work until improvements have been made? What business allows someone to leave in the middle of a crisis without there being a replacement or some sort of back-up plan? That's just bad business. The Presdiency requires sacrifice. He should at least work to fulfill the promises he has made.

Good looking man, ineffective in governance. Good talker and that's about it, but can make the liberals go gaga !

Welfare first, big government, middle class last. That's about some it up.
08:26 PM on 08/22/2010
Yup. This seems to be the Democrats MO. They pour on the corporate welfare to get campaign money and they throw money at the poor to keep them quiet (and get votes) and then they take the thumb screws on working people to pay for it all.
12:58 AM on 08/23/2010
as opposed to Repubs?
pour money to corperations and the rich, forget about the middle class, screw the poor totally?

Once again, we get mired in the details and forget the big picture. It's not how hard he works that's going to save the country, it's how SMART. He's had almost two years, during which time he passed an almost $1 trillion increase to the deficit with no clear indication of where the money was spent and claims that not all of it was spent; he passed a healthcare bill that did nothing to fix the problem, but basically chucked the baby out with the bathwater against the citizens' wishes, and he insensitively stomped on the feelings of 9/11 survivors before traipsing across country in campaign mode. None of this seems very smart to me, but then I didn't go to Yale. I'm just a fly-over country bumpkin that knows the difference between wants and needs, can balance a budget and have money left over for a rainy day, and will NEVER vote Democrat again. This is not my party; I don't recognize it anymore.

Great, vote in another Repub., and see where that gets you.Think for your self fly over, it's the fact Obama has to drag a lead weight of those that care not for you or your kind,(mine either) for that matter, that the very rich gain rewards for incompatance while you and I pay, and pay, and pay. Quit fighting your brother, and fight those that oppress you.
08:31 PM on 08/22/2010
I really don't understand your point. Someone points out that the Dems are blowing money on corporate welfare and your counterpoint is "well the GOP is terrible too". So what? It doesn't change the fact that neither party is any good.

Voting for a Repug won't make ANY difference because the Democrats are exactly the same. NAFTA, GATT, free trade with China, H-1b, an banking deregulation were all signed into law by Democrat Bill Clinton or did you forget?

But that isn't comforting. We need a real alternative. We need a third and forth party.

WITH OBAMA YOU GET WHAT YOU SEE

Which could not be said of all other previous presidents, some of them great and some not so. As examples, we now know that FDR, JFK, Eisenhower, Clinton, Jefferson and a few others had secret love lives. Some of the presidents are later not considered to be totally "neuro-normals," like Woodrow Wilson and Lincoln.

Some, like Reagen and George W., are now considered by many to have been fronts for plutocrats who "control" the US through million dollar lobbying and propaganda efforts.

Obama is just too sane, and this is driving the country insane--talk about the weird world that is evolving. Democrats are their own biggest enemies, but that is a truism about everybody.

To keep to this simple theme, how is Obama his own biggest enemy, keeping also in mind that he is a highly intelligent and sane person? In other words, what went wrong, or why are things seeming so difficult?

Basically because the country is in a lot deeper hole that anyone visualized. It can be pointed out how his advisers and Congress are far from perfect. But more to the point, it is impossible for any president under the existing circumstances to even appear successful unless they are making extraordinary appeals to the majority. When the country appears to be close to going to hell, just promoting reform legislation is not enough.

Obama will need to stop being so sane and start appealing to the majority.

I hope he enjoys his vacation. Seems like I'm always saying that about this President. While he plays Iran gets more and more dangerous. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38804551/ns/world_news-mideastn_africa

Perhaps this sad POTUS was blackmailed as soon as he had his first briefing. He broke every promise. He did a good job with the bankers; got super stimulated. Now its time for fluffpost to anger Americans with his continuous vacations...then came Petraeus for the next military stimulus...war with Iran, Pakistan....and the beat goes on

No privacy!!! No privacy!!! No privacy!!! The next big bold headline will be "Obama seek attention while on vacation." Whether he seeks it or not, reporters crawl through any kind of hole to get a pic of him and his family and report tidbits like the family's visit to the ice cream parlor...THEN blame him for their reporting. Sick!!!

Here's my definition of a vacation: It is a time away from work where you don't have to answer the phone when your place of work calls.

I'm thinking that definition would not apply to the President's time away...so....he is not on vacation.

6th vacation in 8 months while asking everyone else to sacrifice, according to his VP "it's time to give your fair share" I guess our fair share pays for the fuel burned on Airforce One on all these trips. The average American is scared to death or is having trouble makings ends meet and he is off on vacation again!!!

Who cares? Another frivilous dig ... leave the man alone.

As for vaction times we all know that RETHUGS have a history of lazyness:

George W. Bush's vacation time = 1020 or 1/3 of his presidency. He set the record for the most vacation time taken by a President.

487 days at Camp David
490 days at Crawford Ranch
43 days at Kennebunkport Compound

Total: 1020 days, more than 1/3rd of his presidency.

By comparison:

Carter took 79 days in 4 years.

Clinton took 152 days in 8 years.

Reagan took 335 days in 8 years.

Bush Sr. took 543 days in 4 years

As far as polls are concerned he's in the same ballpark as some of the great ones:

Kennedy-56% (9/12/63)
Eisenhower-48% (3/27/58)
Roosevelt-48% (8/18/39)
Obama-47% (12/6/09)
Clinton-37% (5/26/93)
Ford-37% (3/28/75)
Reagan-35% (1/28/83)
Johnson-35% (8/7/68)
Bush-II-29% (7/31/92)
Carter-28% (6/29/79)
Bush-I-25% (10/3/08,
Nixon-24% (8/2/74)
Truman-22% (2/9/52)

"To Kill A Mockingbird" and "The Red Pony". Two of my favorites. Harper Lee and Steinbeck are just the best.

I'm annoyed about something. Let me peek back up...

Oh. Right. There it is: "and for himself a sprawling summer epic about the downfall of a family that moves from the Midwest to Washington. Parallels anyone?" What is that is supposed to mean? Get off his back :-(

Have a wonderful vacation Mr. President and family. Fall will be busy and the summer was a hot mess. You deserve some fresh air and some family time. Enjoy. :-)

All the time. If he did not work, we would have went off into an economic abyss. He, through much criticism worked so hard on many multi-levels that his critics claimed he needed to focus on just one problem at a time (oh, how soon we forget) and he hit the ground running after taking office unheard of by the previous occupants who normally had a break between campaigning and occupying the white house. But then, you probably was too busy saying that he was doing too much...at least at that time. I do not know about you or your mindset. In spite of the fact that I had problems with George Bush, I prayed for him equally as much as I prayed for Obama of whom I did voted for. Why? Because it is important to not forget whats happen when they make mistakes...it has egregious consequences. I never was upset when Bush went on vacations. Why? Because I wanted him rested in the hopes that fewer mistakes would be gleaned if he at least did not have exhaustion as an issue. And this was for a man I did NOT vote for or endorsed. It is common sense to want your country and president to succeed whether you like him or not.

I guess Phil Graham was right on. We are a country of Whiners. No matter what is done, people whine. The problem is that people had gotten used to Washington only passing a few bills per election cycle, and now that Obama and Pelosi are forcing these people to actually work, instead of sipping Martini's with Lobbyist, our "foes" in the now defunct Republican party, can't stand it. NO more ridding the clock on taxpayer money. Ironically, it's the same Republicans party who, despite being less popular than Dems, will tell you that the country is fed up with spending, when they spent like drunken sailors during Bush ERA. They want the country to believe that they are stewards of taxpayer $$$, so that they can finish what they started, Bankrupting our Country. They want you to believe that O is spending all the money, when at least his budget pays for things, as opposed to borrowing the $$ from Saudi or China. Obama's budget deficit is slightly higher than Bush's, and this includes putting the war and healthcare, in the budget. Who do you trust more?
