CBS2:

New York may flood the city streets with thousands of inexpensive rental bikes, reports CBS 2′s Tony Aiello.

Supporters say pedal power will improve the environment and riders' health, but others fear it'll add to the "bike bedlam" in the Big Apple.

This picture should be sent to your local politician and ask for their support
for more bicycle friendly policies.

That's soshulism and is far more of a threat to The Land Of The Free and the Home Of The Brave than a silly little mosque.

What's "inexpenxive" mean? THere were no prices in the story. In Hell's Kitchen a bike rental goes for a whopping $40 a day or $10 an hour. That's so much money for a day of riding a bike, and you can only ride it up and down the West Side Highway, because riding on the streets with semi trucks and horse/carriages and speeding cars just isn't worth the risk to your life.

Free art materials?! Hurray! Just kidding. Why do i suspect the street will find everything to do with them except ride them?

I used to ride my bike (a Frejus 10-speed with Columbus tubing and all Campy components) all over New York back in the 70s. I used to ride from Canal Street to Central Park, all around the park drives, and then back--all at top speed, no helmet, never a thought for the dangers. I had some hair raising crashes, things that would certainly kill me now! But I was young and felt invincible, and I guess at the time, I was. Anyway, a bicycle is a nice way to tour New York, as long as it isn't snowing or raining. You can see a lot. Just watch out for swinging taxicab doors. They can really ruin your day, and many days to come. I do suggest a helmet, too. A head is a terrible thing to crack.

Im an old biker and for most of the time i think that bikers will menage on their own thats why plesae dont try to help us. As i think it will not be long as from helping they will start to make more thing worse then good . I have a great bike i have bought it and tried it out really excelent quality but the design didnt quite speak to me. I changed it at bicycle motor they have chrommed it and now it looks a lot better if you have that bike i really advice to do the same. And i did it without anyones hellp no programs no political refrences i just get my ass out of the couch and went to buy the bike,

America is not a bike friendly country. Why do Europeans make better choices for their citizens than does America. If there is no profit in it America does not care. NY this is a great idea, more bike lanes too.

..easy to answer...Europeans haven't broken their social contracts with their citizens or within their countries with ridiculous claims of individual freedom and corporate rights...the Teapubliban mentality is not dominant in European politics...

It's the communisty activists that escaped the destruction of the Berlin Wall and are spreading Marky-MarcLuhanism and Mousy Dunn Thought to all corners of the glob. They worship the devil and drink the blood of newborn guppies. They are more gangrenous than a thousand al-Qaedas, and they're spreading like filed wire!

Now New York will look like Beijing in the 1980s and Beijing will look like New York of the 1980s.

NY metro area bicyclists are real _arses, disobeying street signs, hogging space, traveling at high speeds and hitting pedestrians on the GW bridge, all decked out like amateur Lance Armstrong wannabes.
08:55 AM on 08/21/2010
In many European cities, you have to pass a training course in order to get a cycling license. People tend to obey traffic rules because cycling is so important to daily life. Except stealing is a major problem, so most people have basic nondescript bikes, often picked up on the cheap (about $25) at used bike shops full of stolen bikes.

NYC should take a lesson from other bike friendly cities.

If you provide safe places to ride, park and store your bike
people will support it.

I live in a small Midwestern town and the city council tried this Utopian bicyclist fantasy about fifteen years ago when the population was around 75,000 people. Within a month all of the bikes had been either stolen or thrown off of parking garages and subsequently destroyed. The whole idea is unrealistic and a complete waste of money.

I agree that it's easy for bike haters to sabotage these programs.

Why does it work in Paris? Marseille, Aix-en-Provence? Does it say something about American attitudes and destructive behavior? I wonder.

In 30 days they will all be stolen this is NYC not Omaha

What makes you think a $1000 bike would be safe in Omaha? And, a $1000 bike is about an average price for an upscale bike, there are even more expensive ones......

Our idiotic progressive city council tried this around 15 years ago. Within a month all of the bikes had been either stolen or thrown off of parking garages and subsequently destroyed. During the past year they made bike lanes on all of the roads in the retail district. This involved narrowing the car lanes by 2 to 3 feet. Also they made it a crime to honk or yell at bicyclist. It's a brave and stupid new world.
