Date Night: Five Art Films You Shouldn't Miss (VIDEOS)

First Posted: 08/20/10 09:10 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:25 PM ET

2010 has seen a number of beautiful art films released to, as usual, a paltry box office showing. One has to believe that sometimes the lack of strong audience turn out is due to simply not knowing when an art film is coming out, let alone worth seeing. These five art films are either in theatres now or will be released within the coming month and deserve your $10.

Mao's Last Dancer

"Mao's Last Dancer" follows Li's story from his impoverished childhood to his triumph on the international stage. Based on Li's memoirs, the Australian film, directed by Bruce Beresford, is a biopic of the inspirational variety that focuses on its hero's emotional and professional journey.

Seriously?

Date night?

Sorry, trying to imagine the women of America persuading thier dates to see these films?

Maybe artsy Manhattan gay date night, but more than likely friend movie night.

Mao's Last Dancer was excellent - it is much more than a ballet movie.

Is it just me but does the guy in the headline photo look like he thinks the girl has a BO problem?
Just wondering....

I'm probably some kind of doofus, but the whole Glenn Gould thing, including his Goldberg Variations, somehow underwhelms me.

I suppose you can play it better.

Seeing how you're familiar with his recording, I find it hard to believe that you find his playing no different from the other recordings. You don't have to be a pianist to recognize the difference.

What a bunch of elitist, homoerotic, seditious, unamerican junk.
And I will be seeing as many as possible.

Forester,

I expect that you will given that you are only two degrees of separation away from the film about the cameraman. The separation is explained like this. The cameraman filmed the "African Queen" which was adapted from the book, of the same title, written by C.S. FORESTER.

There's already a film about Glenn Gould called "32 Short Films About Glenn Gould" released in MCMXCIII. It was shown on my local PBS station (not during a fund raiser, so it only aired once).

The last film about the artist Basquiat entitled, I believe, Basquiat was really excellent too. All those movies which featured Andy Warhol as a central player shows him to have really a parasite-like relationship with others.

Especially looking forward to the two "dance" movies, but they all look worthwhile.

I'd love to see them, but I doubt if they'll come to my small town. Have to grab a friend and fill up the gas tank....

Black Swan looks lavishly, deliciously, and extravagantly thrilling! We have a date with the Angelika then.
