Troops: Skipping Christian Concert Got Us Punished

Troops Christian Punished

RICHMOND, Va. — The Army said Friday it was investigating a claim that dozens of soldiers who refused to attend a Christian band's concert at a Virginia military base were banished to their barracks and told to clean them up.

Fort Eustis spokesman Rick Haverinen told The Associated Press he couldn't comment on the specifics of the investigation. At the Pentagon, Army spokesman Col. Thomas Collins said the military shouldn't impose religious views on soldiers.

"If something like that were to have happened, it would be contrary to Army policy," Collins said.

Pvt. Anthony Smith said he and other soldiers felt pressured to attend the May concert while stationed at the Newport News base, home of the Army's Transportation Corps.

"My whole issue was I don't need to be preached at," Smith said in a phone interview from Phoenix, where he is stationed with the National Guard. "That's not what I signed up for."

Smith, 21, was stationed in Virginia for nearly seven months for helicopter electrician training when the Christian rock group BarlowGirl played as part of the "Commanding General's Spiritual Fitness Concerts."

Smith said a staff sergeant told 200 men in their barracks they could either attend or remain in their barracks. Eighty to 100 decided not to attend, he said.

"Instead of being released to our personal time, we were locked down," Smith said. "It seemed very much like a punishment."

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation first reported on the Christian concert. The foundation said it was approached by soldiers who were punished for not attending or offended by the religious theme of the event.

The group's president, Mikey Weinstein, claims Christian-themed events are "ubiquitous" throughout the military, and he credited the soldiers for stepping forward.

"Whenever we see this egregious, unconstitutional religious tyranny our job is to fight it," he said.

Smith said he and the other soldiers were told not to use their cell phones or personal computers and ordered to clean up the barracks.

About 20 of the men, including several Muslims, refused to attend the concert based on their religious beliefs, he said.

Smith said he went up the chain of command and traced the concert edict to a captain, who said he simply wanted to "show support for those kind of events that bring soldiers together."

While not accepting blame, the officer apologized to the soldiers who refused to attend the concert and said it was not his intent to proselytize, he said.

"But once you get in there, you realize it's evangelization," Smith said.

Pure consciousness, the highest point of the soul is similar to a mountain peak that has been hidden in the clouds, but when the sun melts the clouds away, the mountaintop receives the full light of the sun. Love burns away ignorance and illuminates the mind with unity and the presence of a pure consciousness that gives rise to a mind that is capable of seeing a totally new dimension. On the mountain peak of the soul one can see a new horizon in the clear, upper, rarefied air of pure consciousness where one is able to guide the mind’s activities in a new direction that one has never before known. In this way God gives the spiritual mind new instincts to prepare it to move in a new spiritual consciousness. It is sad when religion blocks the light, the new horizon, the gateless gate to freedom.

I agree. Those who aren't Christians don't realize how militant and dictatorial Christian fanatics are. Everything turns to its opposite, and I'm waiting for the Holy Roller children to grow up and rebel against their corrupted parents.

I used to live in Colorado Springs and was a cab driver there and I got to tell ya... after 15 months of going on/off picking up Air Force cadets to/from base to around town and what not, rest assured, this Christian evangelism is real and is happening.

Mind you, various cadets I picked up were all willing to go out and drink and have fun and thus, didn't fit with what I'm saying... but there were some who you could just tell were being indoctrinated in some fashion. Having had some speak to me in biblical verses or handing me those religious cards with psalms on them. And I took several to the World Church in the Springs (more than once).

Military abusing religion?? I really think it is the other way around, there is nothing that mutates, corrupts and deforms more an effective military force than to make into a religiously biased one..

Most likely because you are a christian and not in the military. We do need to make a big deal about it, because one of our rights as Americans is NOT to have government sponsor religion. It is one of the freedoms that my son, who is in the military, believes that he is fighting for.

I agree. In fact, the first amendment of the Constitution directly affects what the government cannot do to us. The government or its entities CANNOT interfere with our freedom to worship or not as we please. I'd fan you again if I could. FAVED

I do not believe God is so misleading and confusing as to allow so many different religions to exist and not tell us which on is the "preferred one". So, either all are God's way or none are the way. We must learn to co-exist because not one group, person or entity has the proof beyond any doubts.

They Military always punishes non-Christians for not drinking the Kool-Aid. Both my son and my daughter had similar things happen to them. Republicans own all the military contracts so they have a vested interest in keep the wars going. It is easier to brainwash the already brainwashed than it is to try to start from scratch.

I suppose this captain is on mandatory leave now pending an investigation for his 'conduct unbecoming an officer'? When found guilty I expect he will be fired on the spot.

this is one of the tons of reasons id never join the military. Besides being sometimes sent to fight for no good reason, but having it ALWAYS be called, "preservation of our freedom", you get a whole lifestyle shoved down your throat. In civilian life, if i hate my boss i can quit. But in the military, if you hate your commanding officer, youre stuck! No way man. nooo way.

This Christian Taliban should not be allowed to exist. Our troops cannot be held captive by any of these religious fanatics. In fact those so-called Christians who even mention their religion on any military base should be court marshaled or otherwise disciplined. Christians, like no other sect, seem to have the feeling that they need to force their beliefs down our throats. What arrogance!!!

Troops, citizens, non-citizens. Everyone must be free of the Ameriban. Wonder if the ACLU got ahold of charging every Officer, Enlisted, and politician right down to City Councils for traitorous acts against the Constitution, people and country of America? As well as breach of oaths, because all these people have to swear to uphold the laws of the Constitution. Hell, even Anti-smokers have gotten Prohibition passed again, and that IS in the Constitution as Un-Constitutional. I don't read one law in the Constitution that says you can inflict YOUR religious beliefs upon anyone outside yourself, and there are a bunch of laws that state they cannot be imposed in school or politics!

If Pvt. Slovak can be executed for lies, just to show people what can happen, I won't mind seeing all these people up against walls in very public executions. What would our Founding Fathers do with them? Field, lots of militia, wide and huge budget for weapons and rounds!

Lovely. Soldiers denied the rights and freedoms that the right-wing "patriots" like to claim those very soldiers are defending.

The website only lists the concerts related to their "Love and War" tour. This article states that they headlined this particular concert. It also contains a quote from one of the group:
