Wyclef Jean Not Giving Up Bid For Haiti Presidency, Will Appeal Election Board's Decision

Wyclef Haiti President Bid

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Hip-hop singer Wyclef Jean said Sunday he is not abandoning his presidential bid just yet and will try to get the courts to overturn a decision disqualifying him from the race.

Speaking to The Associated Press by telephone from his home in Croix des Bouquets, Jean said his lawyers will file an appeal with the national electoral dispute office.

Jean said that he has a document "which shows everything is correct" and that he and his aides "feel that what is going on here has everything to do with Haitian politics."

"They are trying to keep us out of the race," he said, referring to Haiti's political establishment.

Haiti's elections board rejected Jean's candidacy Friday night – presumably because it decided he didn't meet residency requirements, although the board did not cite a specific reason. Under Haitian law, a presidential candidate must have lived in the country for five consecutive years leading up to the election.

Jean has argued that he was not required to comply with the law so strictly because after President Rene Preval appointed him as roving ambassador in 2007, he was allowed to travel and live outside the country.

Some officials in Haiti worried about political unrest among Jean supporters after his candidacy was rejected. But the singer asked his fans to stay calm, and there were no significant election-related protests or violence over the weekend – although rumors swirled about a large protest planned for Monday.

Many people in Jean's hometown of Croix des Bouquets – a suburb of the capital, Port-au-Prince – cheered the singer Sunday in his quest for the presidency.

"I love what Wyclef is doing," said Paul Jean Augustine, a 27-year-old mechanic. "We're ready to die for Clef, and without him there's no election. We are with him 100 percent."

Although he issued a statement late Friday saying that "I respectfully accept the committee's final decision," the 40-year-old singer said Sunday that he is appealing the Haitian board's decision on the basis that it rejected his candidacy before the national electoral dispute office, or BCEN, could issue a final ruling on the residency issue.

Jean said that shortly after he filed his papers to run in the Nov. 28 election, two Haitian citizens challenged his candidacy, saying he had not met the residency requirements.

The BCEN ruled in his favor, Jean asserted, but the two citizens appealed the decision. The case was still pending when the Haitian elections board decided to disqualify Jean, the singer said.

It was not clear whether Jean's legal argument would hold up. Elections board spokesman Richardson Dumel said that as of Sunday afternoon, he had not seen any paperwork from the candidate indicating an appeal, but he declined to comment further.

The board on Friday accepted 19 candidates and rejected 15. A spokesman read out the names of the approved and rejected candidates quickly at a late, hastily called news conference.

It would have helped both candidates and voters if the council had explained the basis of their decisions, said officials from the Joint Mission of Electoral Observation, a division of the Organization of American States and the Caribbean Community.

"Regarding the 15 candidacies that were deemed ineligible, explications about the reasons for invalidating them would have contributed to the transparency of the process," the OAS wrote in a news release issued Saturday.

Jean said he had planned to leave the country this weekend to see his family in New Jersey, but has decided to stay in Haiti to see the appeal process through.

Shortly after informing the AP of his decision Sunday morning, Jean announced it again on his Twitter feed, saying: "Tomorrow our Lawyers are appealing the decision of the CEP. We have met all the requirements set by the laws. And the law must be Respected."

I would just like to point this out:

The ridiculous censoring at The Sheeple's Republic of HP0, is at an extremely heightened level.

Se@nPenn has an article regarding Wyclef, on a new HP0 thread; however, HP0 is not allowing responses that aren't kissing Penn's bumm.

Here's my post that didn't make it:

Give me a break.
Both of you are, celebrity opportunists.

You've been going to Haiti for 6 months? Gee how convenient to go there after a tragedy that finally inspired Global attention which also included the celebrity bandwagons.

Where were you, prior to this tragedy?
The lives of the people of Haiti have been in turmoil for a lot longer than 6 months.

Check yourself before you check other people

I sure hope he makes the mistake of visiting Haiti and meets one of the many corrupt warlords hoping to run the show down there. They'll take him for a scenic tour of the countryside and he'll never be heard from again.

In this era of electing or appointing people to high office without any ounce of experience in America...I guess he just thought that the Haitian government caught that bug too...

"Some please call 911" - or Gone Til November....haha. Does this guy really need to exercise his right to be a president of any nation?

I presume his legal defense is, "I'm rich and famous."

A person with an ego so inflated the think they are above following your constitution is probably not a great person to elect president.

Wyclef Jean: I'm Not Giving Up My Bid for Prez

Friday evening I was at my parents listening to an online Haitian radio station and by 7pm they still hadn't announce the list of potential candidates. Soldier on the streets had blocked the Fas-a-Fas protesters from even going near where the CEP and reporters had gathered for hours awaiting publishment of the list. I knew then that Wyclef would not be included on the list, because every step they had taken thus far seemed to be basic riot prevention. Saturday our family got together to discuss what had happened and exchange what those back home have been saying:

-Wyclef DOES meet the residency requirements as a ROVING Ambassador.
-Haitian political system is treatened by the POTENTIALITY of CONCREET CHANGE; "we" prefer the same old...and those in power aren't trying to give that up.
-Wyclef started with drastic proposals: Allow duel-citizenship, establish FREE education, and what not.

There is SO much that this man has planned which can MODERNIZE Haiti and he is of these modern-times. Haiti is not going to want to see this shift in policy and way of life. Those in power don't want an equal footing for all Haitians, it would mean that the Mulatto/White would no longer have the control they have over the populous. I mean imagine using Creole instead of French for formal affairs...it is an affront to their very sensibilities! And Wyclef could mandate these changes if he were in power. They simply won't allow it.

I used to hang with several people from Haiti when I lived in Miami.

The place is desperately backwards in many respects. It is tragic.

Usually when I'm Tr0Lling I can come up with a 1/2 clever possible solution.

Haiti has me stumped.

The guy supported and funded the brutal youth rape gangs that descended Haiti into chaos, which prompted the beloved president Aristide to step down.
He has blood on his hands

He's not qualified, not speaking any major or minor language. He cannot even read the constitution of the country that he want to be President of.
He is clearly not a resident, his wife and child do not live there.

Wyclef supported the coup against Aristide. He's linked to Haiti’s elite, basically represents the interests of the sweat shop owners, and produced an anti Aristide documentary with testimonials from sweat shop owners. He also supports the efforts of Bill Clinton, and believe it or not Clinton is not liked there. He destroyed their farms!

So one of his first actions in an attempt to become president is to call the system that denied him (for not meeting the proper requirements) wrong and appeal it? To try and find a workaround of the system that is in place? To ask for special treatment?

It sounds like he's more qualified for Haitian politics than I first thought.

WYCLEFF PLEASE STOP!!! Your deisre to run for president looked like a bad idea before you were rejected, now that you have been rejected and still trying to challenge the CEP decision you look desperate and foolish. If you really want to help haiti, run for a smaller political office to show haiti and the world what a vote for you is worth. I doubt he'll do that! smh

I thought he accepted their decision. Is he already flipflopping?
09:13 AM on 08/23/2010
I feel Wyclef is focusing his energy on the wrong things here, he should accept that he's ineligible for presidency and realize that he can still make a huge difference in haiti anyway, possibly larger than even the president could. Being a musician Wyclef should understand the power that a self made man possesses to move the people, regardless....

I would encourage Mr.Wyclef to continue to make an difference despite the rejection of his bid to the presidency .
