Obama's Martha's Vineyard Vacation Is Flooded With Rain

MARK S. SMITH   08/23/10 05:25 PM ET   AP

Barack Obama

CHILMARK, Mass. — He may be leader of the free world, but President Barack Obama isn't exempt from a summer rainstorm like the one that blew across New England on Monday, swamping his Martha's Vineyard vacation.

Gone was any thought of more presidential golf. Instead, his only outing was to a local school gym to play basketball – indoors, and in private.

On the fifth day of a planned 10-day holiday here, Obama was once again mostly out of the public eye.

Criticized for summering on an upscale resort island at a time when so many Americans are out of work, he's practically been in hiding since arriving.

The storm moved in Sunday, raking the island off Cape Cod with heavy rain and wind gusts. It churned up whitecaps offshore and sent waves crashing against jetties at Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven. Mariners struggled to tie down sails on boats anchored in the chop.

With the weather so gloomy, Obama spent much of Monday at Blue Heron Farm, the multimillion-dollar compound he's rented for the second straight summer.

Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton reported that activities there have included reading, watching movies and playing poker with Obama's Chicago pal Eric Whitaker – who's staying at the compound with his wife, along with senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett and her daughter.

Indeed, the shut-ins didn't lack for entertainment options. The farm has its own stretch of beach, a basketball court, a swimming pool and a workout room. However, the basketball is half-court and outdoors, which explains why the president drove to the Oak Bluffs School to play.

Burton said Michelle Obama and daughters Malia, 12, and Sasha, 9, had been able to get out a bit despite the weather, but he didn't provide details.

Since his arrival Thursday, the only other times the president has left the farm was for golf – twice; to visit a Vineyard Haven bookstore with his daughters; and to go for a picnic with the whole family on a private beach.

The Obamas are scheduled to leave Sunday. That morning, the president will fly to New Orleans to mark the fifth anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

Though there's still plenty of time for a date night or other activities, Obama seems determined to avoid being conspicuous on Martha's Vineyard. That might be politically prudent, not just because of the island's reputation as an elite playground but because of the flak the first lady took for her recent vacation trip to Spain to dine with the king and queen.

Aides insist the Obamas have not downsized their Vineyard vacation – that's just their island style. "Martha's Vineyard is a pretty low-key place," said Burton.

Still, it's a big change from when President Bill Clinton visited here, dining out often and making the rounds at the homes of the island's political and literary set – from author William Styron to actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen. Clinton once threw a party for friends and reporters where he accompanied singer Carly Simon on saxophone.

At least some residents grouse that Obama should be out visiting more shops and boosting the local economy, especially since his motorcades have snarled traffic.

"I think it's really bothersome to a lot of people," said Wendy Maseda, 40, Oak Bluffs. She said the difference with Clinton is "huge ... Clinton really helped businesses here."

I wonder if the media and the locals want some cheese with their whine.

First, it is storming and raining and soggy, too much to do much outdoors. Then, he is hiding indoors.

That is the press on Obama on just about everything. In a nutshell.

It's funny that the locals felt that when Clinton visited MV he was so interested in helping local businesses by getting out and about so much. The reality is that that was merely a byproduct of Clinton's love for the limelight.

"Clinton really helped businesses here." Sounds about right. Obama hasn't helped business anywhere.

That's an untrue statement. I live in the Inland Empire in SoCal. A much needed freeway widening project here received $128 million of the Stimulus dollars which allowed it to be completed, which it was in danger of not being finished due to lack of funds. That created a total of 8000 jobs over a four year period.

In July, Senate Republicans blocked a small business lending and tax cutting bill.

Enough already with the anti-Obama broad generalizations. Know what you're talking about.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but he's a simple PRIVATE vacation like ANY other President has taken before... Why is this a problem for the critics and some other Americans???

The people commenting on how "old" the president looks are basing this on one set of pictures. Didn't we just see the same president at the bookstore with his daughters, or leaving go on Airforce one? He looks older and tired sometimes and at other times he look fresh. When you are close to age 50, that is true for most people in positions of genuine responsibility, unless you are a regular botox fan.

The media is bored. Without President Obama they all would've been out of they're jobs back in 2008.

I'm loving this rainy, cool, windy weather.......after the 90 degree temperatures for almost a month, the break in weather is a sigh of relief. Taking long walks, and catching up on reading, there's plenty to do.

This article is filled with digs against President Obama and the First Lady. How distasteful!! I'm certain if the Obamas had a ranch where he could go on vacation which had taken up 3 years worth, I'm sure you would have something to say about that too.

If you are gonna write about the vacation, just write about the darn vacation, don't need to replay the so call flak about MO Spain trip, or the bs about summering on an upscale resort island at a time when so many Americans are out of work.

But he IS vacationing on an upscale resort island at a time when so many Americans are out of work. That's the plain truth, no matter your political beliefs. Without that angle, the story is only "It's Raining on Martha's Vineyard". That's what journalism is all about - creating a story where there is no story.

what? and where do most presidents, or for that matter, people w/ harvard law degrees and wives who pull down 6 figure salaries as hospital admins vacation? in slums? people are out of work due to decades of GOP and conservative policies to shift jobs abroad and concentrate wealth here in the hands of a few - That's a story -

And I suppose his is the only family that come to MV for vacation. People go on vacation all the time while others are out of work. What's so new about that. I don't recall reading or heard that vacations was cancelled for all, since some are out of work. Just saying.
