Patrick Leahy Challenger
U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy has easily won a spot on Vermont's general election ballot.

MONTPELIER, Vt. - U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy has easily won a spot on Vermont's general election ballot.

The 70-year-old handily defeated political newcomer Daniel Freilich (FRY-lick) on Tuesday in the state's Democratic primary. Leahy was first elected in 1974 and is now the Senate's second-longest serving member.

Freilich, a 47-year-old U.S. Naval Reserve physician from Wilmington, was making his first run for elected office.

Leahy faces Republican Len Britton and five independent or minor-party candidates in the Nov. 2 general election. He also may face Freilich again. The defeated Democrat has said he'll run as an independent in the general election.

If you're wondering who Leahy's Democratic, soon-to-be Independent challenger Daniel Freilich is, check out his weird campaign ad, which appears to be an awkward parody of a hugely successful viral video ad campaign by Old Spice.

Well, actually I thought the cow was funny, but not funny enough to vote for Freilich. Leahy isn't perfect, but he's better than anything else that's come across the pasture of late.

Give me a break! since we cannot farm him off to a stud farm it's time for Leahy to be put out to pasture! :-)

How much could it cost to run in one of the country's tiniest states? Don't they still communicate there with paper cups and string, Pony Express and Morse Code?

While i didn't suport this guy...it was a good thing to run against Leahy and bring up some money ties the old statesman has...like taking a ton of cash from big pharma while voting on health care issues...big surprise, he does not like universal care...andI say this as a leftie...Leahy needs some competition...

For everyone outside this state who thinks Leahy is so great...you can make jokes about the bozo who ran against him...but the fact is Leahy takes tons of money from drug companies via elections he will never lose while voting against socialized medicine...an acting member of the senate who takes money over the issues he votes on...as Vermonter and a Dem, I am sick of that...Leahy needs to go...but he won't and it will just be bad politics...but make those jokes about the guy who ran against him...Leahy is a fool in our state...politics is local...

Then vote him out. It's time for him to go.

Pat Leahy is one of the great senators of all time. This is a man who is passionate about our Constitution. With all the creepy attacks on this great document, it's nice to know there is a man there in Washington who truly understands the meaning of it. What it stands for and what it prohibits the government from doing. The first is under attack on a constant basis. Now the 14th is being scrutinized by the right as giving too much to people they don't like. Pat Leahy is there to protect it from narrow minded pinheads.

And our judicial system is set up to enforce it. He has been a tireless watchdog of our courts.

Now, on to the general election. He faces Len Britton. Recently, Len suggested that the federal government step in to zoning issues concerning the NYC "mosque". Nice to see a GOBP'er who wants govt out of our lives but get involved in local zoning issues. Real consistent thinking there, Mr. Britton.

I love all those comments about Vt from people who don't live here. Tells me you know exactly nothing about this state.

Kat -- I don't live in Vermont, but our national senators and congresspeople's actions affect all Americans, so I guess it's right that people throughout the country have a voice. We may not always agree with everyone else, but at least we are free to say what we think and believe. I agree with your comment on a state and local level, just not on a Federal level.

I think the cow was necessary. Fireworks are so overdone and eagles so militarist...great big talking rabbits send a confusing message...yep. Perfect ending. It's too bad that voters didn't register the decision-making skill that went into this.
