Stephen Colbert Explores Obama's Religion Perception Problem (VIDEO)

On last night's Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert had a longish segment concerning the recent nutlog protests of the Cordoba House in lower Manhattan, and the widening gulf of Americans who seem to think that President Barack Obama is a Muslim.

One part that immediately jumped out at me was a video clip of Charles Krauthammer, offering up his diagnosis for why there's such widespread public ignorance of Obama's religious beliefs. Here's how Charles sees it:

KRAUTHAMMER: He spent years in Indonesia, and he spent a lot of his Presidency in trying to develop outreach with the Muslim world -- speeches in Cairo and Turkey, appearances in Saudi Arabia and all that. So given the fact that you don't see coming out of the church with the Bible in hand, as you would a Bush or a Clinton, and the fact that he's had this emphasis in Islam, I can understand how the numbers [of people who erroneously believe him to be a Muslim] have widened.

So there you have it! Obama's mistake was spending a significant amount of time in predominantly Islamic countries, as well as making a concerted effort to "develop outreach" with the Muslim world. This is terrible news, of course, for thousands of American soldiers, who have spent nearly a decade in Afghanistan attempting to do the very same thing -- win the "hearts and minds" of the Afghan people.

This is potentially troubling, of course! Let's check in with the troops in Afghanistan, to see what they are up to -- hopefully they're walking around with Bibles!

Well, now, I think that's going to send all kinds of mixed messages.
