I thought getting a following was required before getting a major book deal these days, it was a trend that emerged and really took off with social networking and blogs. A lot of TV shows are spawned from web series, people get famous for web films.

If you can recall a time when the book came before the following I am sure it all seems backwards to you now. In general though every time a new media format comes into the fray, it influences how all the older ones play the game. TV affected radio and print, and the web has affected TV, radio and print.

This is not all that unusual these days, and it's what we advise all independently publishing authors (as well as "trad pubbed" authors) to do: establish a platform before writing. Without a "platform" -- an audience, a fan base, a database -- chances of success are very low. If independently publishing, that's where you end up with the garage full of books; if traditionally published . . .well, it's unlikely you will be.
