The 'Cornucopia' Bag: From The People Who Brought You 'Gluttony Pants'

First Posted: 08/26/10 05:47 PM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 06:25 PM ET

From the folks that brought you Chef Chris Cosentino's 'Gluttony Pants' (designed specifically for eating), comes the self-proclaimed "World's First Farmer's Market Backback." "The Schlep to and from the market will never be the same," Betabrand proclaims.

Designed to counteract the epidemic of "millions of people visit[ing] farmers markets without a suitable shopping bag," the $120 Cornucopia Bag works in two modes:

1) as a shoulder-slung wide-mouthed bag hungry for food products, with stacked compartments (genius) to separate items and weight,

2) and as a backpack, which also includes a sleeve for a laptop.

Check out Betabrand's photos of the revolutionary food shopping product in all sorts of action in their hometown of San Francisco, along with some brief videos of various Cornucopia bag maneuvers:

I just use the green bags you reuse. Big square bottom, strong straps, holds tons of stuff. I stop by the meat place first, keep the heaviest things on the bottom and use the smaller shoulder bag where I also keep my wallet for the really delicate stuff. That $120 will buy almost three weeks works of groceries at the farmer's market.

Me too! If I lived near an urban farmer's market and had to walk to bring my purchases home I would be more inclined to invest in a wagon.

A couple of years ago I made some oversized canvas totes for the farmers market. When I get there I do a walk through to see what I'm going to buy and at which stall. Then I go back through and buy the heaviest stuff first, then proceed on to buy the more delicate items, if I am going to be buying a lot I take a wheeled cart that looks like a milk crate with wheels and a handle I got on 'end of season clearance that will take at least one full tote.

If it had a couple of wheels it would be perfect. But I guess you could put it in one of those metal shopping carts with two wheels which take stacked bags...wait a second. How much is this again??

$120 for a backpack whose amazing features are multiple compartments.. and 2 types of straps? And are those videos supposed to inspire awe for this product?

"The Strap" -- "OMG there is another strap on the inside, for over-the-shoulder carrying that is TOTALLY different than if you just slung one backpack strap over the shoulder!"

"The Stuff" -- "I unzip a zipper and place an orange into the bag! I knew you'd be astounded!"

"The Switcheroo" -- "Stuff the 3rd strap back into the backpack and it's a normal backpack again! And no, this isn't just the reverse procedure of the "The Strap" video! It's a totally different feature!"

It would go nice with my urban sombrero.

Also, I'm 99% sure that these are based on the sacks workers use when picking crops. It's only a world's first if you're focusing on the markup.

To my knowledge, apple picking bags don't also operate as backpacks. If they do, then we stand corrected. And we make shiny disco pants that would go much better with your urban sombrero.
12:27 PM on 08/27/2010
You sound upset. That wasn't my goal. My goal was to only point out that it seems like a pretty high markup for a apple picker bag. I don't know your overheads, so can't really speak to the reasonableness of the pricing beyond supposition.

Furthermore. If the backpack aspect is the only thing different between an apple pickers bag and your item, then it's essentially an apple picker bag with more straps. There is *nothing* wrong with it being based on those bags. I was just commenting on it due to the "world's first" headline.

Lastly, I am probably not going to buy the bag due to my normal diet consisting of nicotine and caffeinated drinks(which I don't need a bag for usually). I am highly interested in these disco pants, though.

I have to agree with Code For Food. It's not innovative or useful enough to justify the price. Same story as the pants: cute idea, but the main innovation is the "name" of the product as an attention-getter for news stories.

Keep designing, and do more extensive testing with real people (and not the San Fran yuppie kind) before you finalize the design and the price tag.

This bag is sooooo handy! LOVE IT!
04:31 AM on 08/27/2010
Hey it serves multiple purposes so we're just going to charge you multiple bags. It's a bag, it only serves one purpose, to hold stuff.

How washable is it when the jar of honey leaks or the organic tomatoes get squashed?

It's also missing a bit of a trick in that all the multiple sections looked like there were things that could be accordion folded closed then zippered shut to compact it when you didn't need the full space. I have a satchel from college that has that feature, expanding its capacity to almost double with one zipper. For $120, I'd want that feature.
12:14 PM on 08/27/2010
It's made with washable fabrics -- so wash away. But as with all backpacks with straps and buckles, you should wash gently and hang dry. After a few reads, I still don't understand the feature you're discussing. You can unhook the separating pockets to create a full cylinder if you wish.

One big drawback I see with this. With my current backpack, I can only carry so much in the backpack and in my hands when I ride my bike to the store. So sometimes I need to make two trips. But I can see myself stuffing this thing full and end up taking a spill or throwing my back out or something because of the extra space that I could stuff food into. I'd probably still buy it just to have the option, but it's WAY too expensive.

I don't see the advantage of spending two or three weeks worth of groceries on something that is only marginally going to make my life any easier. I'm like the other guy/gal here, it's probably meant more for the yuppies/hipsters with cash to burn and looking for a status symbol.

Yes. We designed it for all urban shopping and urban-carrying-of-things. So it serves as a backpack, gym bag, or laptop shuttler as well. So it's made with the very same materials you'd find in a $120-$180 backpack sold by snazzy messenger bag companies.

It's interesting enough. I just wonder if it's possible to carry this while riding a bike or something.
10:37 PM on 08/26/2010
Yes, it's designed for folks who bike, walk, and ride public transit to shop.
