AOL Travel News:

Just as travelers are getting upset about the rising prices and fees, airlines are taking issue with record fines being levied by the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA has a dead serious stance against airline safety improprieties and since 2004 has imposed nearly $30 million in civil penalties against more than 25 carriers. And on Thursday, regulators levied a fine of $24.2 million against American Airlines. That figure, the largest fine in FAA history, nearly trebles previous sanctions.

Safety aside, the commission probably had to pay for carry on luggage and got whacked for other fees on their flight to Washington.

Is it just a coincidence that airlines, coal mine owners, and BP are held accountable when we have a Democratic Administration, but not when we have a GOP Administration in the White House?

Since I was a little kid I have been hearing that the Republican Party is the part of big business - which explains a lot.

I'm not surprised with all the raising of ticket prices and all. It's now the price we pay to be safe when we fly. Right? Here's a question...sorry if I sound stupid but when it talked of regulators, who are they? Or are the FAA and regulators one in the same? Subject FAA email me sylverroses2010@yahoo.com

I see this not as pesky regulation imposed on benign businesses by overzealous government, as many in the airlines have said. "Oh, it'll raise ticket prices and force more flight cancellations." Fine. I'd rather have my flight cancelled than crash because of a falsified maintenance report covering up the installation of substandard parts. Wouldn't you?

why does there have to be a choice? How about reasonable ticket prices AND safe air travel?

Finally a regulatory agency with some cahones. Maybe the SEC can take some notes.
