In ten years we will be surprised when a book sells more print copies...maybe sooner.

Eugene Robinson has a new book coming out. I have an IPad

However, he is coming the Raleigh 3 days after the release and well, he can't sign my IPad, so I am spending $15 more to get the book.

Great thing about the e-books, I can carry a whole library to the airport, my house won't drown in books, etc, But there are some things that e-books just can't do.

I couldn't ask Eugene Robinson to sign my IPad.

Yeah, sure as long as you don't drop it on the floor, or run out of battery power or sitg on it or drop something on it, or .....or....

Yawn. This subject is getting old. So what if some e-books out sell hardbacks? The percentages still favor print books over all. Get back to us when all e-books start outselling print.

What obtuse publishing companies and retailers don't get is their business model ( really overpriced hardbacks--to slightly overpriced paperbacks--hardbacks in remainder bin) ) is NOT working.
Here's a hint--- price all soft-backs in the bricks-and-mortars under $10 and hardbacks under $15 and see yours stores flooded with customers. Instead of shutting them down and complaining about bad business.

You know why that would NEVER work?

Because there is common sense involved in coming up with your solution.

Look around. . .

Those in charge of just about everything in this country. . . from Federal, State and Local government officials right on down to CEOs of Barnes and Noble, Borders, et al will resort to anything and everything (mainly whining about and/or throwing money at it) before even considering a common sense approach to a problem.

Got an iPad in April, and haven't purchased a book since. A few years ago I decided that I don't need little plastic discs for music and video anymore, and now I don't need little blocks of paper.
I still enjoy reading, but I'm no longer awash in books that I'll likely never read again...

Here's a thought. the content you purchases is worthless, You cannot sell it, give it away exchange it or donate it.. And you will throw it it all away when Ipad becomes outdated and/or discontinued.
YOu're now placing all of your intellectual context in the hands of one company. BIG mistake, which you will live to regret..

Profound insight.

Thank you for pointing out the obvious that we are too blind to see because we've been razzle-dazzled by all the hype.

When it comes to price, I go for the paperback if its cheaper than the ebook. I bought into the ebook because of the savings, not so much for the convenience, although I do like not having all those books to lug around or figure out what to do with.

I love hardcover books. I would normally buy the hardcover edition of a book. However, I am now employed and, if a buy a book at all, I look first to the Kindle price (I LOVE my Kindle). I should guess it is the economy that is as damaging to hardcover sales as it is ebook readers.
