Rachel Maddow: Katrina Recovery 'Is Not Over,' It's Everyone's Problem (VIDEO)

First Posted: 08/27/2010 7:41 am Updated: 05/25/2011 5:30 pm

Rachel Maddow had a strong message for America Thursday night from New Orleans: Katrina is your problem, too.

Appearing live from Algiers Point to help commemorate the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Maddow delivered a "we're all in this together"-style message.

"On this anniversary, there will be a lot of reporting over the next few days about this city's recovery from the flooding that followed Hurricane Katrina," Maddow said. "Call it a recovery or call it survival, it's not over. And this isn't just New Orleans. This is America. And if we do not feel like we are all in this together, we better have a damn good excuse for that."

Last week, hosts Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow both did stories about a blogger whose travel instructions for folks going to Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally got posted at the Maine Tea Party Patriots website.

Included were warnings about what stops to avoid on the DC Metro.

Predictably, the liberal blogosphere had a field day with this citing it as another "example" of racism within the Tea Party.

There's only one problem: the culprit, a Washington, D.C.-based realtor, is a major contributor to the Democrat Party as well as gay rights groups.

My heart goes out to the people of New Orleans. I feel the Govt should have helped relocate people on a temporary basis and the Area that was New Orleans should have been turned into the first and only Secure Port in the nation. We still dont have one. 9-11 should have given us at least one secure port and the tragic flooding of Katrina upon New Orleans could have been turned into a blessing of good paying jobs for all the people displaced by the flood, while giving the nation some security. That opportunity was blown. The NOLA people were short changed and what could have been will most likely not be seen in my lifetime. A secure Port would have gotten all the funding to help people get their lives back on track and retain cultural heritage while launching NOLA into the future. An ambitious project that would have given back to the residents while enhancing security for the nation. Bush was asleep at the wheel.

Oh please, she is sounding like a Republican and I don't think we have the patience for her "emotional stability" in the conservative ranks. It is, however, time for some degree of optimism, as it is becoming apparent that rudiments of introspection have formed in even the most insular of the progressive mindset.

I am awestruck by what Rachel accomplished in two hours of programming Thursday and Friday. The Rachel Maddow Show is the best new news program on television. Not just MSNBC, TV overall. She retains viewers' interest with good pacing, humor, and her personal enthusiasm, and while she's got our attention, she explains complex issues simply, she gets to the heart of every matter, and she hammers home why these issues are important. She has an Edward R. Murrow level of credibility.

My favorite thing about her is how she gives generous credit where it is due but she absolutely does not suffer fools. She can eviscerate an idiot with the best of manners. Mama and Daddy Maddow, you raised a fine woman. I hope both MSNBC and NBC management have the brains to leave her alone and let her do her thing without the silly tinkering for which they are so famous.

WE CAN'T AFFORD IT RACHEL. We have tons of money for war profiteering. We have tons of money for useless projects around the country, (I believe they call them pork), but we have NO MO MONEY FOR N'OLENZ. This country is systematically being destroyed by the greed fueled powers that be. The ONLY improvements to N'OLENZ have been for profit. The majority of those who fled, will never return. So, who do we rebuild it for, or should I say who do THEY rebuild it for, they meaning those greed fueled forces that only act for profit.

N'OLENZ is a doomed city, in part due to man-made changes and in huge part to the pain and suffering this Mother and ONLY home we have will bring to the entire planet in this very century.

Just IMAGINE what, if anything, will be left of New Orleans when ocean levels rise, then add to that the simple fact that storms are growing in intensity and frequency year after year. Katrina will be the new norm in storms, no longer the 'big one' no one ever wants to talk or think about.

The future scientists spoke about for decades is here. We have crossed that threshold of inaction that promises to test humanity like never before in its history.

New Orleans is already a city that WAS. It is simply a matter of time before it is finished.

As a lifelong resident of the GREAT city of New Orleans I can say that it is a city alive with culture, tradition and family strongholds that are greater than or equal to any other place on earth. We have our own way of talking, living, eating and celebrating life. We have our fair share of problems ( like any other city ) and we have our fair share of things that we hold true to our heart. We have problems in politics and law enforcement that are rooted in a good ole boy system that needs to be flushed and started over. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but when people from outside of my city issue such harsh judgments on the city they have never lived in, well it puzzles me and saddens me at the same time. I have not returned due to the President ( GWB ) allowing the insurance companies to run over the average citizen and not pay claims. If it weren't for that I would be right back in the Crescent City enjoying my Saints and some good Gumbo.

So what was your comment on the video or what Rachel was discussing? The PPP data you point to provides a comparison on the Bush Katrina response vs. Obama's oil spill response. According to PPP, many in the Gulf say that Bush's response was better. That could be a genuine response, or one based on the fact that Obama's Black, acorn stole the election for him, and he'll never win with some people.

Obama's response to the oil spill was terrible. Bush's response to Katrina was terrible. I don't get your point. Rachel wasn't making this comparison. I'm confused by your linking to this website.

Leftist? Is that what it's reduced to now? You won't find that data on any Rightist website either. Why? Even they know that saying Bush's terrible response was less terrible than Obama's terrible response is nothing to brag about.

Leave it to the right to try and make hay out of two dissimilar disasters. What you also won't find on any rightist sight is Haliburton's complicity in the Deep Water Horizion incident. Hmm...Haliburton...now why does that sound familiar..?

Why Don't We Do It In The Road?
11:22 PM on 08/30/2010
The point that obviously flew right past your hat holder is that on a site like this, which is all hate, all the time when it comes to the side they oppose, will not even report on such info, yet, if there was any reversal to those numbers, like Obama's handling of the oil spillwas viewed favorably by those polled, THAT would be reported. Given the sheer volume of lies and distortions that have been spewed about Katrina, it IS relevant to bring up a fact that the Maddows of this life conveniently ignore!

It seems to me and it's a sad thing, that the republican party wants to desperately forget about Katrina or the Iraq war even happening.

The Republicans want to forget about it and apparently a good portion of the population is quite willing to let them. How anyone could forgive and forget the debacle of the Iraq war (don't even mention the bank disaster, the Katrina response, and the overkill spying they engaged in post 9-11) and be willing to put the Republicans back into power again in only four years BLOWS MY MIND.
