DCCC Goes Negative, Starting With Anti-Duffy Ad

Dccc Negative

WASHINGTON — Democrats' House campaign committee is starting its first advertising blitz of the fall election cycle Tuesday with a TV spot hammering Wisconsin GOP candidate Sean Duffy, one of several Republicans who are threatening to wrest an open Democratic seat.

The ad charges that Duffy, running for the Republican nomination to succeed retiring Rep. David Obey, favors privatizing Social Security. It's the first salvo in what promises to be a series of highly negative ads by Democrats as they fight an uphill battle to keep control of the House in a toxic political environment.

The party's decision to air it before Labor Day reflects what strategists say privately is a calculated tactic in key districts: Blast Republican candidates early in attempts to disqualify them in voters' eyes before they can make a case for themselves.

"Remember the crash?" an announcer asks over a sinister soundtrack in the ad, which intersperses images of worried-looking women and senior citizens with Duffy's face. It says people could have lost 40 percent of their retirement benefits if Social Security had been invested in the stock market.

Duffy says in a message on his website that he doesn't back privatizing the government retirement program for the elderly, but the ad cites a video taken of him on the campaign trail in which he appears to endorse a GOP congressman's economic plan. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., the top Republican on the House Budget Committee, has proposed the partial privatization of Social Security.

"Sean has clearly stated that privatization is not an option to fix Social Security, and voters know he will work to find meaningful solutions to a program already in the red," said Wendy Riemann, Duffy's communications director.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee wouldn't comment on the size of the advertising push – it's paid for by an arm that is barred by law from coordinating with campaigns – but people knowledgeable about the effort said it planned to spend nearly $90,000 over the next two weeks airing the spot. A party official said the ad would saturate the district's largest media market.

The race to succeed Obey in the 7th Congressional District has already drawn national attention. Duffy, a former district attorney and star of MTV's "The Real World," has secured the backing of Sarah Palin, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. He's the clear GOP front-runner in a Sept. 14 primary and is likely to face Democratic state Sen. Julie Lassa in the general election.

Duffy's campaign had raised almost $1 million and he had twice the amount of cash Lassa's campaign did as of July, according to disclosures filed at the Federal Election Commission.

Obey, the House Appropriations Committee chairman, is retiring after 21 terms in the House representing the Democratic-leaning district.

It's too late.

The meme has already been planted and cultivated by the right.

Democrats have allowed the political conversation to be defined, steered, and dominated by the right.

As usual, Democrats don't know how to fight. This? An afterthought to make it look like they are fighting. A front. A facade. It's too little, too late. It won't matter. Voters have  Read More...

The Dems have a couple of problems going here.

1. Perception is Reality....the American public is looking at the BIG picture...the economy sucks and unemployment is 9.5%. They were told that if we did the $870B Stimulus, things would get better. The Stimulus was passed and the economy still sucks and unemployment is still 9.5%. The Dems Control Congress with big majorities
AND the WH and have for the past 2 years.

2. Nobody likes a whiner- The situation was not great when Obama took over, but, if you remember, He wanted the job and he was given the job by the American Public.
In fact, he made a sorts of promises about how WONDERFUL it would be if he were elected. Blaming the guy who left office 2 years ago makes the administration look weak and pathetic. The American Public doesn't like whiney kids and they don't expect a whiney President!

The members of Congress have an even bigger problem than Obama. The Dems have controlled Congress for the past 4 years and YES, things were better before they took office. Unemployment was lower, the deficit was much lower and the economy didn't suck as bad as it does now. You can argue the causes, but most of the people are just looking at that Big Picture.

I guess eight years of the Bush administration wasn't enough for some people, they want to go back to the really bad old days from the not so good present. If the Republicans regain control of Congress, the country will get exactly what it deserves. Need to start converting my money markets to Euros............
04:31 PM on 09/01/2010
Not a good idea. The Euro is in more trouble that the dollar and if the republicans gain control the dollar should go up.

Since when is telling the truth going negative? It's negative when you lie, like Republicans do.
12:27 PM on 08/31/2010
Dems could tell everyone if you vote Repug you will die.

It worked for the Repugs.
04:32 PM on 09/01/2010
Just a question. You folks tend to use the word repug. I've seen righties use democRAT. Do either of the groups think they are clever? It just seems childish to me.

Even worse, it's intentional. They deliberately won't fight. They WANT Republicans running the country. They are despicable.

And sadly, I'll still end up voting for them because the alternatives are just worse.

Had Obama fired Simpson from the Cat Food Commission, talking about Privatizing Social Security might be a winner for the Dems, as it stands right now, I expect Republicans to be running on "Obama's going to take away your social security."

The masses know they have a more uncertain job outlook at the current time than they did during the last election. That is the problem. They demand results.

Dems need to get energized, and get it right. If you are thinking about voting republican or staying home this elexction, than you need to remember the eight years of Bush, Cheny and the rest of thier administation, lying stealing cheating, and slapping down the middle claas and the poor. For those liberals and progressicve that are upset with President Obama and feels he betrayed you(For what reason is beyond me) you need to get it together. Bush betrayed for eight years and never gave you a thought. Republicans have no agenda they have no vison, they only want to destroy President Obama and his adminstartion, that is there only purpose and they aren't thinking about the American people and they have shown that over and over again. let's remember that it took eight years for president Bush and his administartion to wreck this country and if you listened to President Obama's speech than you would have heard him say that it's going to take longer than one term to fix this mess. We have got to get it together, and get energized and organized!!!!

Liberals offering fear? You mean like "death panels", and trying to kill grandma? Those were not meant to incite fear? Who said that again?

For all those old folks who were screaming "keep your hands off my Medicare", maybe they will care that their precious CONS are going to be very hands-on with their Medicare and SS.

After last Summer's Town Halls, you have the gall to say that?

How about this Fear Factor: Go buy duct tape and plastic for your house to protect yourself from poison gasses and mushroom clouds. That was not a lousy thing to do?

Kinda hard to figure out how, with Gingrich, Palin and Pawlenty endorceing him, this Duffy guy has any support at all.

Must be from viewers of "Real World" (I wouldn't know, I've never watched it).

Since when is calling the other party on the TRUTH negative? Nobody
made the Republican go anti citizen. Nobody forced them to take
food off of peoples tables or make Grandma and Grandpa eat cat
food. Nobody force them to try to deny Americans healthcare. Nobody
forced them to export jobs for 8 years. Nobody forced them to deny
Americans unemployment when no jobs were available after they
exported the peoples jobs, using the tax breaks GWB gave them. If
they have to start answering for their failed policies it is
because they are indeed answerable to the American people. Where
are those WMD anyway?
